modern obscure music welcomes sam haar to the imprint for the first album released by an artist other than label founder pedro vian. the album is entitled euso. sam haar is a new jersey born producer and sound artist. influenced by both experimentalism and traditional dance music, haar’s music is something uniquely his own. he is best known as being one half of musical hardware loving duo blondes with zach steinman (neither of them are actually blonde). they famously favour machines over computers and provide hypnotic live shows. blondes have released the majority of their discography for rvng intl., before jumping to r&s in 2017 for the more danceable warmth album.

after relocating from california at 7 years old, nasser grew up in a musical environment in new jersey. surrounded by gifted artists from an early age, nasser was fed a diet of authentic 70 s soul, 80 s pop and 90 s hip hop and r&b, which all influenced the spirit of his music and his trademark big production. at only 24 years old nasser displays real musical maturity and a subterranean fearlessness in his productions. mentored by house music master dennis ferrer, nasser has released three ep s and on the indispensible objektivity label, as well as remixing dennis iconic son of raw in 2017. his gramercy ep on suara revealed nasser s more techier side, exposing his wider abilities. his most recent release on objektivity, the just like that ep , dropped in summer 2017, in tune with his first ibiza season. the 20/20 vision offshoot basic vision continues to mine the folklore of the legendary back to basics with a selection of carefully selected deep cuts from the history of house music. chris cuevas hip hop already sounded strong when masters at work chunked it up in dub form, and then rob mello perfected the jam when he performed an extended edit on the breakbeat fuelled jam. eddie fowlkes where will i be? is a classic slice of 90s vocal house, while free energy is an uptempo deep house jam for those feel good peak time moments. black science orchestra sound utterly timeless on the soaring new jersey deep, laying the soul on thick and keeping things fresh and funky throughout.

the nu-rons, were a family group consisting of two sets of brothers and cousins, the four young men in question being brothers daryl howard and raymond gibson (daryl’s mother registered him under his father’s surname of howard and raymond under her maiden name of gibson) together with otho bateman and charles bateman. they were all born and raised in salem, new jersey and from the age of ten and eleven began singing with a fifth member and gibson brother rudolph in a group called the gospel 5. they eventually decided to crossover to secular music and as a group known for their energetic dance routines they came up with the new performing name of ‘the nu-rons’ (taken from the word ‘neuron’ which is a cell that transmits nerve impulses). however rudolph was soon to leave the group due to physical illness. also daryl howard and charles bateman had also been part of a working group known as the devotions prior to becoming the nu-ron’s.

124 recordings know how to put together a deep house compilation, and they re sounding fierce on this latest, appropriately titled levels up. the jams come heavy and funky from a range of on-point operators, leading in with tom jay s quintessential new jersey bump n grind on hanging on. david moran is a little more shadowy but no less groovesome, while nicola brusegan takes things on a sweet and smooth tip. across the whole double pack there are classically informed jams to satisfy the most weary deep house heads, but keep an ear out for the old-school flavoured heft of freak ds power of bass, which should get some seriously jacking airtime in the right kind of dance.

we are not where we live, but the valley we built enjoyment through suffering. beauty in chaos. african ghost valley apply these principles to create their heavy doomsday electronics pulled in from the black bunker a d.i.y space under a multi-story car-park. separated from any scene on the surface, the record was put together by european / canadian duo childle grangier and gabriel ghebrezghi a partnership formed in the heat of heavily improvised recording sessions, where the pair would thrash out their versions of power electronics, industrial waste drops and rhythmic dub rumble to the cities homeless. keeping these raw fnal cuts away from any studio trickery, the microphone would be left on to archive feld recordings and wayward audio drops, capturing the hum and lifeblood of the bunker and the wheezing lungs of the dense concrete that surrounded them. titling this work colony, the album is a open-ended and multi-edged tool for agv to explore, allowing the listener to interpret the work as they see ft, bringing to mind images of corroded space settlements and the darkest recess of human history. you decide.

alicia myers is in peak form on a new release from most excellent unlimited and ace beat, right here right now (hallelujah anyway). originally issued by ace beat in 2015, this collaboration between the new jersey house label whose early 90s releases are still considered gospel house masterpieces and meu marks the first time the track will see vinyl release. making its debut are danny krivit s edit of the original derrick ricky nelson mix and an exciting remix from ricky, the song s composer, and danny, who championed the song from its first appearance and has featured it ever since in his sets. the connection between alicia myers and danny krivit goes back much farther than most people know. in fact, her breakout 1981 single i want to thank you,among the most beloved dance music classics of all time, was initially broken by danny when he played the promo at the paradise garage, catching larry levan s ear. when influential radio dj frankie crocker subsequently heard it featured in levan s sets, he immediately programmed it on wbls, new york s premier black fm station, and the song s legacy was assured. much like i want to thank you, right here right now perfectly blends an inspiring, gospel lyric with an impassioned, soulful vocal performance and club-ready instrumental backing featuring a muscular piano hook. the uplifting sentiment has already proven its power to elevate and unite dance floors in the communal expressions of joy that are central to the most soulful dance experiences and the time is right to spread the feeling! this exclusive release will be showcased on twelve-inch vinyl with a precise replication of the classic 90s ace beat label.

waxwing pops up on re-fix with a crafty, chopped up soulful house approach that will sit right with fans of max graef and felix lenferink. -can you- is a summery jam with plenty of sliced and diced vocals and romantic sweeps of melody, while -longfunk- gets a cheeky shuffle in the mix with splashy drum hits and nifty rhodes stabs to get bodies popping uncontrollably. -do it for em- gets even twitchier in the edit, using all kinds of heavily funked up samples to create a killer groove. -stand it- takes a more classic new jersey approach without losing that instinct for crafty twirls and curls to spice the mix up.

for house heads of a certain persuasion, dj duke is a name that resonates for all the right reasons. the u.s. veteran has been responsible for some of the 90’s most seminal moments, chiefly through tracks such as 12 minutes to do it (under his pleasure dome alias), party time and the prosumer-endorsed deep house classic, heard. he returns here courtesy of emerging imprint solo werks, who host his latest ep, green pastures. a momentous house-led workout, it compounds duke’s reputation as a producer of considerable panache while also acting as an auspicious start to life for the dublin based label. the title track is a grainy, old-school cut that bears all the hallmarks of a dusty analogue-jam and harks back to the days of vintage chicago with the sort of zest you’d expect from a man of duke’s credentials. the other original, skyscapes, is packed to the brim with industrial motifs and is characterised by the sort of effortlessly catchy baseline with which duke has made his name. mysterious and ethereal, it takes the listener on an uncompromising and throughly captivating house journey from the off. on the flip side, we have two stunning remixes, the first of which arrives from new jersey don, ruben candelario aka nicuri. a long-time favourite of nyc-based producers a la joey anderson, nicuri turns green pastures into a dreamy, acid-led space, adding layers of suspense and a glittering vocal intto the mix as he goes. last but not least are dublin-based producers slowburn, who serve up a stunning version of skyscapes. a carefully construed voyage into the deep, it caps off a fine ep with some aplomb.

the reverend eddie bones is the esteemed american composer, pianist and instrument builder cooper-moore’s collaboration with the songwriter and artist ed pettersen. these two fresh interpretations of gospel songs are both featured in the new norwegian tv thriller pilot “the green jersey” which is directed by Øystein karlsen, the cult director of dag, lilliehammer, and was recently broadcast twice in norway.

the r.d.m. band, with singer milton campbell, were from maple shade, new jersey and recorded two virtue singles in 1969. they released their final 45 on the obscure zoom records label in the early 70s. “give up” and “how can i get in touch with you” can also be found on the tramp records album “virtue recording studios”.

without new jersey native kerri ‘kaoz’ chandler, house—specifically deep house—would sound very different. ever since his teens he has been making and playing music with a unique sense of soul, jazz and deepness. from majors like atlantic, king street sounds and nervous via his own madhouse, his releases are never short of genre-defining classics that have spawned a thousand copycats. affectionately referred to as the stevie wonder of house, kerri’s dj sets take him all over the world and often find him playing live keys next to his informed selections. he’s meticulous about sound, too, which means that no-ones kicks hit quite like kerri’s. his instantly classic and timeless dj-kicks mix, though, takes him out of the club and through a world of influences and inspiration.

following on from the ability ii pressure re-release, major problems and compassion cuts present another in-house favourite from their vaults: the sublime garage/rnb earworm dont tell me (how love should feel) by 2-bmw. a tony humphries/zanzibar favourite, the sole release on life of luxury in 1990 was new jersey producer larry p rauson’s first cut, and never saw a full release. it’s presented with three remarkable dubs from the mysterious man in bed, two of which in turn are flipped by compassion crew and, completing the circle, by larry himself. full colour cover with matt finish. restored and mastered by thomas p heckmann at trope. cut by andreas kauffelt at schnittstelle. artwork by mel keane. larry on dont tell me: tony played the song at zanzibar (on a) saturday night. that sunday morning my phone was blowing up... that weekend gave me the moment of my career. i was an engineer at the local cable company. listening to tony humphries on the radio, not expecting it, tony humphries played my record on his show... i did not last much longer at that job.

disco fruit s sublabel continues to turn out smooth and slick deep, funky house, and this time around tonbe is on hand with the goods to get the people grooving. broken heart features rachel on vocals and some sweet saxophone, hitting the spot just right for universally appealing house music. street groove is a more forthright, clubby affair where the drums take the lead and the keys lock into a loopy late night roll. feel so good features some more choice vocal turns with urgent melodic hooks, and then something jazzy swoops in at the end with some proper new jersey heat to get your body popping.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin’ records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called “fairy godmother of house” abigail adams, movin’s first output was ‘i’ve got the music’ by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up “jersey jams” that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin’ records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin’ records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve ‘lucky’ benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line “i love this place”. the ‘place of worship’ mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

lady chann & rapha team up for ‘hard drive’… the uk’s ‘number one dancehall queen’ returns with a storming carnival heater called ‘hard drive’. ‘back it up, hard drive’ is the command from the lady on this minimal dancehall rhythm, which packs in solid sub-bass, a bark, and some well-placed/spaced-out percussion. the producer is the bern, switzerland born and raised raphaël ‘rapha’ gasser, who became hooked on dancehall after hearing a mixtape by berlin-based supersonic sound and has gone on to collaborate with the genre mainstays like i-octane, sheba, kiprich and more. on the flip b-side is the remix by newark-based jersey club original r3ll, upping the bpm and sure to keep forward thinking dance-floors bubbling. kick n clap is the record label founded by django django’s dave maclean.
