berlin-based pascal hetzel returns to caduceus records with a new slice of gritty industrial-tinged techno and finely tuned sound design. “noxious stimulus”, the ep’s title track, is a heavy peak-time filler with a mesmerizing bleepy modular sequence on top of rough monochrome beats. on her remix, rising talent denise rabe cranks up the paranoia and turns “noxious stimulus” into an unrelenting pitch black grinder. “pain tolerance threshold” starts off as hefty with yet another dose of metallic atmospheres and crushing modular sequences, until a bright pad appears out of the dark. proper techno goodness for the wee hours in your favorite warehouse. pressing on smokey green marbled vinyl.

toby tobias has a lengthy history of disturbing the peace. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, second stimulus stirs shimmering staccato chords, roaming pipes and detuned robotic sighs into quite the disorienting stew—the loose arrangement remaining fragmented over 9 minutes of touch-and-go 808 programming, picking up a pseudo bassline assembled from sub toms, introducing a gritty break loop and eventually blissing out into oblivion. with side bs synchro surfer, toby plays with the notion of suspense by gently teasing a muted kick and percussion rhythm under washes of white noise, bleeps and sirens that are tape-dubbed and which, over time, begin a dialogue with each other, as if the machines have declared mutiny on the garage. toby continues to stretch his limits with his output for the esp institute, possibly headed toward a full-fledged devolution of conventional dance music. these two songs may have you arrested for public nuisance.

the new album, liquorice, from martin stimming wasnt initially planned to be an album. there was an intrinsic need for him to express what was going on in this period of life. relationship problems led to a very punk, off-whack attitude to his producing. with seven tracks done and dusted, he figured the work was more than just a collection of weird shit, it was a whole new music experienceÉ add another 5 months of studio work, he named it liquorice. definitely hard to pigeonhole - call it minimal, stripped back, dub, experimentalÉ we think >electronic free jazz< comes the closestÉ no sign of a typical 4/4 bass drum at all and stimming has incorporated his trademark use of field recordings, from a marble run, a pizza slicer, a trashcan, a coffee machine, and an ice train shuttling past to name a few. the stimming esque percussion, which is even more radical this time, has been thrown in with all these facets in his massive melting pot, coupled with some dark emotions to create this liquorice. >this time i didnt use all the main events a groove normally has<, recalls martin

exactly one year ago, stimming bought us the exquisite >funk with me<. a production, created together with south african talent lazarus mathebula. having become firm friends, an invite was extended to lazarus to come to hamburg and spend time in the studio. once again, the result of those sessions is outstanding. with >change<, and through the vocals of lazarus, both artists have built a musical bridge linking hamburg and johannesburg. a beautifully exotic production, as we have come to expect from stimming, with an added african touch. completing the ep are three brand new stimming productions for you delectation. musically outstanding, with his trademark-out-there-touch. this is yet another stimming release, not to be missed. enjoy!
