“i’ve said it before. but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me. going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i’d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern. and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies. and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical. i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique. who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me. and together create something that references both old and new dancehall. while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there’s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we’ve succeeded.

inyoka (roland massey) is from richmond. virginia and has been an electronic music producer since 2005 and a dj since 2009. rolands earliest musical influences were hard rock and heavy metal. which led roland to learn and play guitar for the past fifteen years. roland started making electronic music in 2005 and graduated from the omega studios school of applied recording arts and sciences in rockville. maryland. during that time. roland learned how to record and mix on several consoles and use different software programs and hardware for electronic music production. roland uses his skills and talents as an audio engineer for post-production. sound design. and creating original productions for large soundsy stems. the word “ inyoka” translates to “snake” in the nguni/zulu language. rolands dubstep productions strike efficiently and precisely. like a snake. with crisp bass and minimal instrumentation. with releases on silent motion records and sure state. inyoka is ready to share his signature sound and prodigious talent with the underground bass music community.
