nice price deal !!! ”rundgang” (feedback in swedish) is a track made with feedback and i would call it a.o.t’s very own and personal interpretation of dubstep with ”lyrics” that reflects his wicked sense of humor. ”woot!” on the other hand is an evil excursion in filtered frequency noises and a distorted start/stop rhythm and this is nothing for the faint hearted so brace yourself you are in for a crazy trip verging on techno. the go koyashiki remix takes remixing to another level because go has stripped ”rundgang” to it’s bare essentials and produced a very minimal and slow pulsating track that ends with sublime pianoplaying.

u has always displayed an unironic conformity to his own absolutely genuine/occasionally challenging ideal as to what a release should entail. after a series of predominantly, and (in the most loving sense) maybe begrudgingly, dance floor oriented eps, vienna orchestra is a long overdue insight into his core fascination as a musician, making complex and intriguing experimental pieces that belie the humble mode of their creation, recording from vinyl records and manipulating the audio on old school samplers. this lp is an insight into scores of hours of twiddling with loops and sequences to create music far removed from its source material (dusty classical records acquired on a trip to vienna). this is a dense, blunted world, which holds the sound of a musician indulging their own ear’s obsessions and insatiable curiosity.

physical therapy makes his debut on spencer parker s work them records with a medley of club focused techno cuts. growing up in new jersey, physical therapy later moved to chicago, then new york, before finally settling in berlin where he s quickly built a profile as a stand out dj/producer. baktadust comes in the form of two tracks: the fast tempo main mix that combines peppy piano riffs and metallic effects, as well as a slower fried mix featuring cleaner chords and a sultry bassline. push me then demonstrates robust percussion, a rumbling low-end and eerie tremolo atmospherics before shadowy echoes and off kilter kicks conclude the release in spasm.

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.
