torn is a new face to the samurai camp and our first signing from russia. a st petersburg native, torn has been developing over recent years into one of the most interesting producers in the half step community with his tracks featuring heavily in the sets of many of the scenes most prominent dj’s including homemade weapons, loxy, clarity & presha.
the grethen ep is a gateway to the torn sound. ‘stagnation’ is the most traditional drum and bass of the ep with it’s bouncing, grunting lurch. ’grethen’ goes down low and deep, while ‘self reflection’ is the tune bound to populate many dj sets with it’s tribal percussion. ‘insomnia’ ups the intensity with frantic, restless energy to close the ep. more torn music to come on samurai later in 2017.

after only two years since their first release on cyclone, amoss have become one of the most exciting and forward thinking names in drum & bass. a love of music stretching back into both their pasts, the duo have amazed audiences across the globe with the style, panache and variation which has characterised their work. taking a lead from names such as renegade hardware and moving shadow, james and andrew have successfully moulded their influences into a futuristic, genre-defining sound.

2015 has been a busy year for soul intent. relocating from nottingham to bromley, releasing -the fruit club ep- on lossless in march, his -wanna fight ep- dropped on klute s commercial suicide in august, the sci-fi themed -replicant- marked lossless music s first digital only release in october and his -late night sleaze ep- has been awarded mixmag s dnb tune of the month (nov 15 issue). on top of all this alex is about to launch two (yes two!!) sub-labels for lossless music. the first of these is exkursions. exkursions will cater for the deeper, more experimental side of dnb & electronic music. though concentrating it s tempo focus around the 170 mark exkursions will also be taking explorations down into slower soundscapes. the first release is a 3 tracker from soul intent and the tracks have already turned the heads of respected selectors including doc scott, presha, loxy and logistics. we won t say much for than that, we ll let the music do the talking.

we find it slightly hard to believe that it s been three years since blocks and escher launched narratives music with their explorative *sagan / broken* 12-inch. unafraid to stray from its drum & bass roots, the label has since become synonymous with encapsulating, poignant, cutting-edge music. favouring quality over quantity, blocks and escher have kept the narratives release schedule sparse, only now hitting the big 1-0. along with the founders, only overlook, asc, loxy & resound and rhyming in fives have had their names tied to the label, and it s the latter who returns now for the tenth release.
first surfacing in 2013 with the hindsight ep, rhyming in fives remains enigmatic to say the least. little to nothing is known about the producer, and aside from a free download that dropped last week via mixmag, the new 4-track light leaks ep is only the second offering ever from the mysterious musician.

touched by records third release comes from the boy wonder, joe syntax, with the eagerly awaited track sentinels. backed with a circa remix, this release has seen support from the likes of loxy, data, chris octane and dlr. both joe and circa have been involved with the hospital records off shoot label med school. they continue to grow from strength to strength, as they both continue to deliver their unique ideas. these great tracks hint at the brilliance that is yet to come from these young and exciting artists.

after a lengthy break from the electronic music world, genotype is back with an lp for exit records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm. having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias just jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as trouble on vinyl, renegade hardware and reinforced records, its no surprise that he has managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of jungle. many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. the dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for west indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates. genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.
