inits music has the rare quality of transforming bleakness into a soothing experience. in the duos new ep, wildcard, this mechanism is more intense than ever. and that might be because of the particular circumstances that surrounded its inception. two years ago, nadia dalo and benedikt frey decided to move from darmstadt to berlin. adjusting to a rough area of a big city when coming from a quiet town necessarily brings a change of perspective. for nadia and benedikt, that meant experiencing the city life as outsiders while trying to figure out what they wanted from it.wildcard is the sonic result of this process, and proof that changes always bring growth. recorded in their new home studio during winter, the six tracks on the ep are as haunting as their previous lp for hivern, but with a rawer approach and enhanced power. take cover and solver, an approximation to the kind of moody psych-techno they display in their live-shows and two of the most dance floor oriented tracks init have recorded to date. but its the title track which best expresses the mindset of this work. with its skeletal rattle and undulating synths, wildcard feels as desolate as a berlin street in a winter night, but possesses the kind of focus that turns uncertainty into hope. in a similar way, cuts such as copycat or half baked perfectly capture the sort of estrangement -daunting yet hopeful- that comes when moving into a new place, with its slow tempos mirroring the cautious pace of a foreigner and the intoxicated atmospheres calmly distilling the essence of a new environment. nadia and benedikt describe this new habitat as small kids on big bikes, eating dry instant noodles, playing with whats to find on the streets, static aircraft traffic closely over our heads and constant running engines. listening to the music that arose from it, its obvious that, once again, they&# 39,ve been able to overturn apparently hostile elements into a place were youd want to stay forever

polytechnic youth enter the fray once again, continuing an already productive year (these new 45s are 4/5/6th releases in 2018 already!) with a trio of quite brilliant yet totally different 45s.
alpár aka hungarian bálint zalkai, is the co-founder of farbwechsel, the budapest based record label, and his own recordings of electronic compositions (often built upon random looping sequencers in a minimalist style) are key to the label’s release output thus far. his goal as he sees it is to “catch a random pattern, loop it and build up a piece with that randomly pulsing theme. just let to flow the voltages and sound waves and try not to disturb them or change their basic behaviours”.
the two tracks here were recorded with this approach very much in mind. the atmosphere of “mejiro” is “not unlike a bird observation. attempting to find the right spot, getting closer and closer to the bird, which almost controls you and your movements as you attempt to near it”. whereas “wakayama” is a more direct piece, and maybe the most melodic song alpár ever recorded. while “mejiro” is a woozy, cautious piece, “wakayama is like a tropical fruit or the ume, (the japanese apricot), colourful and full of flavour yet -with thanks to- the slowly humming theme in the background, an element of sourness grips you at the back of your tongue as it ends!

waggons marks the third motip white release on dorfjungs. after the two previous eps »lywer bent« and »the white ep« this one feels drunken yet still more defined. motip white delivers four thrilling tracks composed of colourful and warm techno, house and electronic hybrids. his ep contains bass driven dance songs as well as cautious and charming anthems. while every song has got its special elements with the typical motip white sound, they all work equally well on the dance floor and at home. the smooth and calm fourth track ends the vinyl but is actually caught up by the euphoric digital bonus »simia«, which brings the ep to a surprising though satisfying (digital) end.

hobor is part of many groups and formations himself, such as songs for pneumonia or cointel allstars and the event-series fiktion+masse. his solo project is mainly known for extended dj-sets on various ambient-floors in leipzig and his live-sets - which could be described as cautious investigations into micro-sounds - are mainly based on his work with modular synthesizers. his debut-album on ph17 is a minimalistic, conceptual work that focuses on sound as much as on the way electronic music usually plays. all tracks consist of almost independent layers of sound that behave like improvising musicians. they seem to play together but by focusing on one of them you soon realise they’re actually stoically sticking to there own rhythm and repetition and as the tracks play on these layers of sound start to form ever different constellations. no wonder hobor says he took inspiration from improvising bands like the necks. his album is as fascinating and hypnotizing as one of their live-jams. “constellations is released on 50 limited tapes.

nandu returns for his 2nd release on connected with another unique pair of tracks, the first an african influenced song with the mesmerising vocals of oluhle, the second a 909 style acid dark dancefloor workout. 1. nandu & oluhle - umfazi omuhle (original mix)- a gentle almost cautious arrangement building slowly and ethereally with a beautiful selection of sounds and an african influenced nandu rythm with shakers and claves providing an original feel and leaving space for oluhle’s moving vocals. 2. nandu – another jam (another acid dub)- a more aggressive, upfront side from nandu. for the intense spot of the night with twisted groove of claps and percussion, heavier in the lows with a proper 909 kickdrum with the acid line coming in half way through..... hot.

tune in: dana ruh brings brouqade back from summer holidays. an ep completely rounded, mesmerizing from first to last. sula wakes with vivid snares. precisely produced, finely tuned arrangements and driven by a straight beat and pulsating bass line, the track develops with its deep clubsound to a veritable groover.cautious in the beginning nebouxii gains its selfesteem, builds up subtly, pushes and drives forward and spreads its hypnotic appeal. the mood is constantly high and takes its time to fully develop. sulidae brings you back from the previous hypnosis and gives you insight in a different world: charming vocals glide on a steady synth line, when all around a poetic magic is revealed and some ingenious elements are pulled out of the hat.

michael forzzas is one of the most important techno djs from belgium. like figure head len faki, michael forzzas speciality is to play extended sets which develop an individual athmosphere. figure 015 is forzzas first international release, and forzza sent two unique tracks to berlin, the tenor & the monkey is destined to turn the dancefloor into a frenzy. it puts you in a state of fear and euphoria at the same time. while the tenor & the monkey puts the roof of every club on fire, high on this is more cautious. the powerful groove unfolds its energy in many contexts. the pulse of the track immediate, it feels like the music is talking to each dancer personally. the tenor & the monkey and high on this don t show any effort, yet the tracks rule over the dancefloor: they both manage to focus on the essence of club music, a rarely achieved task these days.

igor tchkotoua and dan duncan are true workaholics. not only are the two mallorquinos forming one of the most exciting techno duos of our time and play in the most famous clubs worldwide, they always make it to pop up in the studio to work on their releases on sonic society, wig records or like in the case of >deliverance<, the new 12inch on cocoon. >deliverance< starts quite cautious but the track becomes more and more complex – pig & dan give the dj a tool that fits the minimal raver like a custom-made suit. the b side is again one of those tracks that put a smile on your face. in >sly detector<, atmospheric techno sound unites with energetic celebration pleasure, just as we know it from tracks like >after ibiza< or >on to the beat<. the rolling hookline which has the necessary splash of acid is, together with the floating trance layer, adrenalising to such extent that nothing else remains to be done but to raise your hands in the air. the track was already a hit with many djs in 2007, and will be one – chosen in the right moment – on many dancefloors in 2008, too
