the second release of polarity records is characterized by old-school house influences with techno shades. the artist, andy rantzen, is an australia-based lo-fi electronic producer. trained as an academic psychologist, rantzen has been writing and releasing music for over thirty years.

polarity was born from an equation of mutual dependence between two opposite elements. although the two poles are of different polarity, they find in each other their main spring and their primary component. ultimately, one cannot live without the other.

for its 5th vinyl release, genesa records gathered some of the most exciting, fresh artists around the world.

between the two of them, jenifa mayanja and lola (aka dakini9) have over 20 years experience in nycs electronic music community. here, they have combined forces for the first time to launch a new label and music collective: sound warrior. jenifa & lola envision sound warrior as a forum for developing and promoting women electronic music producers. based on their own, and the combined wisdom of other women in the scene, jenifa & lola decided to create this platform as a community for women electronic music artists, and hope to grow the idea into far beyond a record label. starting things off with a split 12 inch, jen and lola deliver two distinct takes on percussion-heavy, ritualistic deep house.

2022 repress. rising dutch talent deniro (aka reynier hooft van huijsduijnen) returns to trip with a double ep of original works. the tape records member previously appeared on the label as part of the concept albums. ‘mendoza’ is an 8-track quest into the spheres of polarity and tension. anxious distortions jitter in controlled spaces, angular melodies disfigure warm tones and frenetic cross rhythms flutter through minimalist forms. contrasting messages are weaved together with precision to facilitate a dialogue where dancefloor function and cerebral stimulation interact. deniro navigates his way round vintage gear with a meticulous accuracy, held together by an intuitive ear for timbre, an ingrained passion for detroit soul, and a firm understanding of sonic balance.

what attracts us to chilean-born artist ricardo tobar is the notion of intersection, and although fusion is nothing new, as a concept it will always pull our heartstrings. applying influence is amateur, we see this over and over again as we endure trend-driven appropriation of cultures the world over, but the epiphany when an artist finds true synergy between heritage and influence is a pivotal moment that the inspired will seek, even though it may take the length of one’s career to behold. as pretentious as that may sound, it is precisely the hybrid born from that place of intersection that excites us at the esp institute, the a plus b that equals 3. we hear this in ricardos music the latin american instinct in his drums and percussion, sometimes tightly aligned with body movements and other times hauntingly mis-aligned and chaotic, intersects with his rock influence of ethereal (micro) melodies that slowly layer and layer until were climbing a glorious (macro) wall of sound but most importantly we hear where these different parts of his life come together to further create one unique voice. on both sides of his esp institute debut liturgia, tobar couples one pulsing dance-driven track with another atmospheric and immersive track, requiring we educate ourselves in the polarity of this language he’s building, one that will expand to tell a broader story later this year with his debut album. we welcome ricardo tobar, another forward-thinking artist, to the esp institute, and are proud to support any direction his compass points from here, as we believe hell never follow but will always lead.

with the third release on manhigh, new altitudes are achieved by recruiting one of techno’s rising stars. best known for his work on dekmantel and ghostly international, since 2012 charles duff has attracted increasing attention for his personal and unique take on techno. originally from san francisco but now based in berlin, following his shift in locale his sound has moved on towards a more european sensibility, a mode in full display on his deep mind ep for manhigh.

abstaxion and kasper bjørke return for their second collaboration on dc salas and abstraxions biologic records imprint. matin + nuit is a 3-track ep out in april. biologic records aim to explore the relationship between organic and analogue, natural and urban. this idea of polarity is addressed here through the themes of morning and night. matin is a ten-minute journey through a glistening landscape. celestial arpeggios and subtle dissonances are grounded by a hypnotic bassline and restrained percussion. ivre (drunk) takes an emotive turn. disorienting acid bass winds its way through mournful harmonies and overcast melodies, held together by a spirited rhythmic pattern. ‘nuit’, naturally, progresses into darker territory. there are familiar elements of disco, but they’ve been mangled to create something far more twisted. drums take the lead, punctuated by assertive bass stabs and ominous chords that howl through cavernous acoustics. matin + nuit explores seemingly familiar themes without the use of cliché, employing a diverse range of sound manipulation techniques to paint vivid imagery.
