the italian dj and producer viels is the perfect example of a promising artist who has earned his stripes in the scene. his first contribution to dynamic reflection was a single track on a va two years ago, then a solo ep on the nursery last year and now it s time for his first well-earned vinyl called distrophism. although his sound has matured over the years, he has never compromised as far as his straight forward sound goes. circular, the a1, is the best possible example of that. the continuous drive keeps it going for well over seven minutes, without ever becoming superficial or dull. the b-side extends to other sides of his musical spectrum by making use of more drone-like, hypnotic elements. beside these three convincing originals, spanish heavyweight svreca jumps in for a remix of circular, completing the variance of styles. needless to say, this new release, proves that viels as an artist and this ep in particular, are forces to be reckoned with.

born roy samuel reid in saint thomas in 1944, i roy was one of jamaicas all-time greatest deejays. a natural-born toaster, his rhyming raps always sounded effortless, whether describing the harsh realities of the inner city, or making light of nonsense nursery rhymes. a former employee at customs and excise, he was first active on a sound system called soul bunnies in the rock steady era, moving to son’s junior in 1968, and later, to the legendary supreme ruler of sound, defecting to the rival stereo sound system after that. hits for harry mudie and other producers soon followed, and after the killer debut album presenting i roy impacted overseas, the toaster began spending frequent periods in london. his longstanding working relationship with hit-making producer bunny lee led to some of his most noteworthy albums during the mid 1970s, the 1977 set cant conquer rasta is a superb showcase-style album, on which the toaster blows hard lyrics over five of lees killer rockers rhythms (recorded with the likes of johnny clarke), each complete with a corresponding aggrovators dub on the flip, all mixed by prince jammy at king tubbys studio

the affectionately titled ep, >der kleine elefant<, intends to tell its listener the story about a tiny elephant who is on a huge journey through mountains, deserts, seas and forests where he hunts to fi nd food and water for survival. in each encounter through the magical land, the small animal meets mystical creatures and watches in amazement at the stunning landscapes he finds himself wandering through. each track sounds like a modern day nursery rhyme and our elephant, the hero.

once again, tuningspork records ventures away from its trademark funky house in exchange for something a little more unexpected. last summer, the label issued >free your mind< (tsextra), a baleraric groove crafted by jay haze and ricardo villalobos. now comes another non-sequitur: >comptine d un autre été: l après-midi< (tsultra), mr. tiersens piano composition reconstructed for the dancefloor by jay. french composer yann tiersen has a minimalist approach that many electronic producers could learn from. his piece (the title of which roughly means >nursery rhyme of another summer: the afternoon<) provides the basis for this melancholy track. djs addicted to hyperbolic effects plugins might hesitate to play this - but those who appreciate subtlety will be rewarded here. tiersens original composition is tastefully manipulated into a track that makes sense in a club context, yet sets itself apart from the usual techno/house fare, providing a rare introspective moment on the dancefloor. and it might be worth mentioning: if you play this track and the floor doesnt fill up with ladies, then it probably means youre djing at a gay club. (not that theres anything wrong with that!)

taking a jump up from his laid back lounging mode chris belsey joins forces with trevor loveys of house of 909 and speaker junk fame to collaborate as lill bo tweak. lill bo tweak may sound like a nursery rhyme character that lost its sheep but it is in fact two londoners who have found a massive dance floor smash and served it up on made to play. k-rizzles solid beats , groovy bass-line and twisted flip outs will fire up any dancefloor. as well as this label boss jesse rose has smoothed out the original into a dub version

tekel and tim paris serve up a truly satisfying delicacy for your taste, >sakapuce< is a brutaly stomping piece of modern, sinister acid with big bollocks, crushing beats and a real crazy piano melody. yet this is almost a nursery rhyme compared to the tekel noise feast on the flipside. >pompier bon oieul< is a radical electro rocker with multiple stratas of ear-shattering distortions
