repress - ive never met rod modell (deepchord) in person, but we have met through music. he found an obscure cassette of chi music (from 86), sent it to astral industries and paved the way for the release (30 years later) of the original recordings in 2016. since then, weve exchanged ideas and good music. i sent rod a preview of the kallikatsou recordings - he really liked it - and here came the idea for a remix of lanterns. i started working on some random, lo-fi samples from youtube, using audacity, perhaps the simplest way of producing loops and samples. it’s the only computer based system that feels like the tape recorders i used to work with. i sent the first sketches to rod on facebook, but they ended up in the wrong inbox. i forgot about them, but months later he came back saying he loved them. i decided to go back to working on them, maintaining the lo-fi approach. i began manipulating the samples: time-stretching, tempo and pitch-shifting, mixing different layers and adding old-school monophonic old speaker effects, delays and loops. i used a few field recordings, voices and samples from my early ambient cassettes, and they matched. ario from astral industries got involved and the experiment turned into a plan a vinyl release - red lantern at the kallkatsou.

nearly 15 years have passed since the original release with all tracks lovingly remastered for this new remastered edition, which also includes stl s first ever remix and sounds just as beautiful as the day we first heard it! as bleep so elegantly stated, -deep, reduced dub-techno with ethereal production nuances from stephen hitchell and rod modell. both original tracks here reveal the duo s obsession with the likes of maurizio, basic channel and chain reaction. features a dreamy, minimal house reduction from stl

rod modell returns as deepchord for his first solo release on astral industries since inaugurating the label with his sought-after ‘lanterns’ ep. consisting of two stunning long-form pieces split on one side each, immersions¿ captures the emotive, halcyon sound that rod has long become synonymous with. opening with glistening ambient textures, ‘immersion i’ grows into an 18-minute piece of deep rolling dub techno. on the other side ‘immersion ii’ paints pristine soundscapes of soft, lapping waves, underpinned by submerged pulsations that rise to the surface to continue its deep space explorations. two highly refined and inspiring tracks that sit on the apogee of this sound.

echocord sub-label echo echo continues this july with orbite’s ‘interstellar’ ep, a threetracker from the berlin- based producer. orbite is a brand new project founded in berlin, germany with a nod towards the raw, dubby sounds often heard across the clubs in the city, and where better to inaugurate things than the recently launched sub-label of copenhagen’s echocord, one of the leading imprints in the realms of dub techno, home to pioneering acts like rod modell/deepchord, pole and fluxion who have paved the way for orbite’s own twist on the genre. the ethereal pad textures of ‘skylar’ lead on the package, deftly evolving alongside bubbling synth tones, swelling chords and shuffled percussion to create a create dynamically unfolding six and a half minute cut. ‘moment’ follows, edging things further into dubbed-out territories with heavily delayed dub echoes and mesmeric spoken word poetry intertwining to create a, hypnotic beatless soundscape. ‘organi’ closes the record with emotive, billowing pads, warm bell like tones and vocal murmurs running alongside swinging shakers and stripped-back micro-house percussion.

(recorded from 1993-2000) they were incredibly kind in saying it was the best demo they had ever heard and passed it on to octal records for release, sadly, that didn t materialize and since then these masters have been collecting dust in our cassette rack for nearly 20 years now. we ve spent months doing our best to restore the old tapes from our tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life, it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and redesigning these masters. we truly hope you enjoy reliving these magical times of music, very inspired by all that was happening in those years, there was just something in the air, an undeniable energy, long may it live on..

as mosaic reaches release number 40, steve o sullivan dives into another studio collaboration with his new label mate and expert hand, mike schommer - bringing in the talents of rod modell on remix duties. etching two slices of dub heavy grooves that cover either side of the techno and house spectrum, their first effort emphasises the former on title track -submerged- (b1). it doesn t pull any punches - precision moulded bass takes centre stage around evolving synths and classic delay action. their 2nd -depth charge dub- (b2) leans more towards the latter as the duo focus on the combination of a rolling sub, laidback percussion and subtle stabs that cycle gently around. the cherry on top comes in the form of rod modell s -deepchord s negative-space exploration version- as he takes a 9 min trip to the hinterland of his sonic imagination, elegantly finding new layers and spatial effects. call it what you will, dubbed out house with a splash of techno or dubbed out techno with a splash of house - this is heavyweight material.

sven weisemann is set to release his ‘bilateral relations’ ep via copenhagen’s echocord this september, comprising four originals from the german producer. sven weisemann has been immersed in the underground house and techno scene for quite some time now having started djing in 1997 during the rise of the scene on his home turf of berlin and going on to release material via the likes of amsterdam’s delsin, mojuba, telrae and liebe.detail amongst many more. here though we see sven joining the roster of echocord, a perfect fit for his more dubbed out compositions with artists like fluxion, rod modell and stl on the roster. ‘lunation’ opens the release and sees weisemann fuse emotive string melodies and cavernous vocal echoes with off- kilter rhythms and rounded sub hits before title-track ‘bilateral relations’ embraces a more direct four-four approach via sparse percussion and tumbling toms alongside choppy bass stabs and ever-unfolding, echoing dub chords. opening the flip is ‘monistic’, an airy ethereal number employing billowing pads, bright synth chimes and a dropped tempo dubbed out feel to create something truly stunning and thought provoking before the ‘decimation (valvle tr9 mix) closes things on a darker tip with looming stab swells, heavily swung drums and sporadic growling bass drones.

federsen returns to fifth interval for another sublime instalment of dance floor friendly dub-techno. dewpoint is an altogether tighter affair when compared to the label s first release, point reyes. the drums are taut and razor-sharp, propelling the listener effortlessly through a dense fog of ferric clouds, swelling to fill the outer-reaches of the echo chamber. a highly polished metallic production style that can be compared to some of andy stott s early and classic works. tomas rubek remixes dewpoint for the b-side, remaining faithful to the original track s structure but viewing it through a tinted lens. dewpoint s chords become iridescent, kick drums fall into a straighter pattern and are backed by further dusty percussion, shifting the original into spheres inhabited by the likes of rod modell and fluxion.

part ii ? axis audio. mokira once told kontra-musik that three analog tape echoes are needed to produce one mokira track. when listening to the track axis audio you can hear why. metallic bursts of sound hits like waves on an irish shore in autumn. kept together by a solid bassline and a fragile melody axis audio is an excursion in beautiful sounds. on the b-side, echospace (deepcord, modern love) makes you dance. it is distorted, it is minimal, it is raw and last but last not least, it is oh so funky. this track will move dance floors.

just in time for autumn, fran invites us into club musics parallel world with the project hamlet: aided by oded k.dar (nšrd / the koletzkis) on the piano, she presents cover versions of beloved electronic classics such as Ôsky and sand, Ôlimit to your love, Ôhowling or Ôhypnotized on the fittingly titled album Ôpiano. the initial idea came to the duo at a birthday party, the first baby steps followed the very next day. surprised by the potential, the autodidactic singer fran and the studied concert pianist oded searched far and wide for the perfect grand piano, which they eventually found in the form of an old steinway at the greve studio in berlin.
