repress 2020 - the latest vinyl slice from fbnm sees us head to the depths of central africa via paris to track down a feast of rare seventies afro funky jams from cameroonian master musician eko. we ve brought fbnm favourite riccio along for the journey too, who has provided us with a fantastic rerub coaxing out some modern dancefloor sensibilities and production sparkle.

swag classics centeres around some sought after reissue fare from the croydons legendary swag records label. these are 2 expensive double a side vinyl cuts - almost unaffordable if bough 2nd hand. so this is a very democratioc re release for fans of the label
(if any)think croydon and a few things come to mind, kate moss, punk band the damned, crystal palace football club, peep show and of course dubstep, the now world conquering music genre that will forever be linked to the south london suburb. what you never hear though, is any mention of tech house, another world conquering music genre. and to be honest we’re a little bit peeved about that. because if tech house has a spiritual home it’s croydon, and that is due mainly to swag records and the people that gravitated towards the humble west croydon record shop and studio.

das dritte album der berliner band onom agemo & the disco jumpers verbindet afrofunk, jazz, psychedelic und gnawa. die vinyl-lp erscheint inklusive downloadcode.

born in cameroon, vicky began banging the drums at the age of 9. by 13 he had moved onto bass and within a couple of years he was playing every night from 10pm to 5am in the castel douala cabaret. at the age of 19 vicky moved to paris to study banking and commerce and cram in even more music. he took classes at Épinay-sur-seine conservatoire music school and it was here that he met bandmates of his dikalo project. word spreads and he soon becomes one of the most sought after bass players in the afro arena. his session work features on many scenes stars, manu dibango, eko tala am, kemayo, sammy massamba, toto guillaume and many more. a chance meeting with the gibson brothers also see him play on two of their hit albums. in the 80s vicky moved to the us for spell and excels as a session bassist and touring musician. we pick up the story in 1981. with his stature as a musician and bass player riding high he takes a detour to nigeria to record with the afrodisia label in lagos. the thank u mamma album is the result. it is repressed for the first time, here in 2018 on the revitalised afrodisia label. musical proceedings open up with the heartfelt ode to his mother thank u mamma, smooth pop meets afrobeat boogie. marina driv slows things down with its smoldering jazz. side two opens with its not serious a catchy vocal number underpinned with funky guitars and striding basslines. stormy rain is lazy guitar jazz swansong. we close off the album with the ever so funky you. slick funk grooves powered along with a dose of slap bass. as a side note vicky actually plays left handed but with a upside down right handed bass. this upside-down precursor making his effortless slap playing even more impressive. vicky went on to record a two other albums and still tours and plays as an ever-in-demand session musician.

ernesto chahoud’s ‘taitu’ is a collection of soul-fuelled stompers straight from the dancefloors of 1970s addis ababa. a breathless journey through the unique ethio sound that bands were forging at the time, the 24-track compilation is the result of the lebanese dj and crate digger’s decadelong love affair with the ‘golden age’ of ethiopian music.

pop makossa - the invasive dance beat of cameroon 1976–1984 the pop makossa adventure started in 2009, when analog africa founder samy ben redjeb first travelled to cameroon to make an initial assessment of the countrys musical situation. he returned with enough tracks for an explosive compilation highlighting the period when funk and disco sounds began to infiltrate the makossa style popular throughout cameroon.

brand new, rambunctious, rootsy, spiritual brass-band music from lagos, with singing, drums and home-made percussion. obadikah is a group of old friends who play together in the cherubim & seraphim and baptist churches of the ikeja and isale eko districts. a couple of them were founder-members of the eko brass band, they’ve played with pretty much all the key nigerian reggae artists. the tunes are mostly traditional yoruban melodies, often sung at bed-time. the songs are mostly original, sung in yoruba (though jomido is an egun song from the badagry area of lagos state).

2014 gewann ein unbekannter newcomer namens gold roger das vom splash mag ausgerichtete mot-rap-turnier mit links. obwohl er mit battlerap nichts am hut hat und so recht in keine deutschrapschublade passen will. die gold roger story begann vor gut 20 jahren in dortmund. mit der ersten stereoanlage bekommt er zwei cds: eko fresh und die €rzte. gold roger wird €rztefan, entdeckt die white stripes und skaten fŸr sich. mit den ersten rŠucherstŠbchen wird die lieblingsmusik langsamer und erste raps ausprobiert. als er 2010 kendrick lamar hšrt macht es klick: zum ersten mal wusste ich, wie ich gern rappen wŸrde erinnert sich gold roger und fasst bald den entschluss es ernsthaft mit dem rapding zu probieren. nicht als karriereoption sondern als kunstform.
