stephane signore delivers an excellent record called >we live in a world of ba57ard ep< chordy and firm techno that will rock in venues with good soundsystem. with long an well constructed builds on the opening track called bad trip. this is a vinyl that will no doubt get support from larger names in the industry. the second track is the stanny franssen remix of ba57ard. this is a nice rolling remix with a lot of dynamics and way more uplifting that the original. for the 3rd track on the ep we find this original piece. this is a very deep somewhat chaotic production, this might just be the eps winning track. with a strong arrangement and little vocal edits this will no doubt get played alot. for the closing track we have got >paranoid< the title covers the load, strong dark techno music that will rock your world.

finally released on 12 inch vinyl is the funk ethics & lucid directions (formerly rld) dub that was flying around last year entitled >give<, stepping up on the remix duties is von d who pulls out a truly sublime and sexy refix featuring one of the tastiest bass-lines for sometime. the original sits firmly on the electronica shelf, subtle stabs and lush vocal licks with support coming from the likes of mary anne hobbs, kidkut and gilles peterson.

full drumming, a grumpy chord sound embraced from a dark, rebelling melody line like out of the old rave days and the demanding voice from the massive track internal, which calls the >soldier< with his name. remixer rolf mulder mills with darkly digging sequences and creaky acid effects sharp edged points in the sole of the dancers, so that these also find enough hold on the slant melodies. >skydive< makes in the matter of grooving also thick cheeks. the track rumbles more and more elegantly than stoic through the space and pulls from the propulsive combination of the vocal-hookline and the harmony changes a well-arranged serving of pop flair which cuts the darkness of the night with a flashing blade from light. toureaus impact version of >skydive< serves 8-bit like clicking in the treble area, swears to the rhythmical spirit of the good old days and asks him for a bouncing dance on the floors in the here and now.

the next ep on germany s hello? repeat imprint comes from seuil, one of paris s most inspired underground producers. in terms of style, it is a match that could hardly be more perfect. hello? repeat has spent the past six years carving a niche for itself with eps from cabanne, audio werner and label co-founder daze maxim, plus acclaimed albums by bruno pronsato and kate simko. seuil, meanwhile, has put out a steady stream of ultra-deep 12-inches on labels like freak n chic and sammy dees ultrastretch. both specialize in a sound that is modern, understated and hypnotic. late call is exactly what its name suggests: a record made for the deepest, most tender portion of the night. the drums are slick and punchy, but the rest is woozy and romantic–this is one to put on when the crowd has stopped chatting and everyone s dancing with their eyes closed. topping it off is a vocal line made famous by diana ross but recited here by an androgynous diva: if you need me, call me, no matter where you are, no matter how far… dark, trippy and weirdly moving, this is one of seuil s finest tracks yet. >slow motion< strikes a similar chord but with a more subtle approach. here you notice seuil s rare touch for subtlety: in the absence of any real >hook<, he keeps the track moving with expertly sculpted drums, a warm half-melody and a gently propulsive beat. soft chords sustain in the background to create a balmy summer night feel. both tracks show seuil and hello? repeat doing what they do best: delivering something deep, functional and full of character.

first up we have flora purim getting ashley beedles extended edit treatment with the sublime latin-jazz funker >angels<. great vocal hooks, guitar licks and a jazz-funk groove with added disco overtones to boot! if the mizell brothers had been born in rio then this is what it probably would have sounded like.
on the flip we have brian protheroes >pinball<. a lost psychedelic pop classic which got to number 22 in the charts in 1974. a staunch ashley beedle fave with his tripped reworking doing exactly what i says on the tin. dubbed, stretched, spaced out and arranged to perfection. great!

heavy austrian dub mechanics from group niob aka phlox conspirators gerhard potuznik and martin sovinz. this is their 2nd release to date, a dedicated follow up to last years >vector ep<. opening track nexus takes dubtechno one step further down the road to the lowlands. it manages to keep the atmosphere dread and melancholy but balanced with light skipping percussion and whispering snippets over a four to the floor beat, creating an uniqe kind of bass music. second tune aldo glows with warm chords over thick and dreamy rhythms, rendered in spacious minimalist dub style. side two starts with a vocal drenched acid-rework of nexus by no other than tin man. the words >doesnt matter who your are< will settle down deep in your subconsciousness and refuse to leave for some time. already an anthem and that kind of tune that should not be missed on future dancefloors. the ep ends with a fierce and forward shifting, floor shaking nexus-rework by londons bass cadetts dark arx

neon dreams is the debut album from london-based producer and night slugs co-founder james connolly, aka l-vis 1990. across 15-tracks and 55-minutes, james distils a lifetimes worth of musical influences and experiences while conveying the story of the last 12 months in his life through vocalists samantha lim and javeon mccarthy. 2010s *forever you* single, which featured mccarthy, was a key jumping off point in establishing the overall vibe of neon dreams. the track features here as a slimmed down, 3.5 minute version. this length represents approximately the average track-duration across the entire lp, and is indicative of james long-held desire to proffer an album in very much the traditional sense of the term. further vocal turns come from co-founder of the sound pellegrino imprint and french hip-hop outfit ttc, teki latex.

summer has all but gone as the darkness draws in, the clocks go back, and fina records releases something a little different for the night owls. cosmic dutch space cadets morning factory step up for fina 005 with a slow motion rhythm and tone ep. having previously appeared for yore records and brother from another mother 2020 vision, the guys have been busy in the windmill whittling a perfect autumn release. sultans of swing ep doesnt quite shadow dire straits but it certainly delivers. hypnotic title track of the same name is features futureproof basslines, layered with an enigmatic drowning echo-led synth while >lady< adds a different finish to the wax. here we find d angelo s 96 vocal hook effortlessly breaking through the shuffling punchy bass.

the title track >radio anatomy< is a synth-laden italo monster, serious dance-floor material. detuned pads fizz under an arp and walking bass, caving in to a tear-away synth lead that pumps the tune into overdrive. the groove has a pace to it and sits on top of the beat and all surrounding articulation and effects keep things interesting.
on the flip we have got a serious remix from none other than emperor machine. this guy has been unstoppable in the remix department for some time, and it doesnt look like he will be faltering anytime soon! we are initiated with brioskis fantastic original bass and pad sequence, but in typical e.m. fashion the build up is sustained and full of suspense. haunting vocal chants ensue before the bass drops and the funk kicks in. what a drop! the switches are clever, the instrumentation is solid and the vibe is out of this world. brioski - >radio anatomy is an unforgiving italo dance-floor release, with help from one of nangs finer contributors.

this is the third of the black dogs liber series of releases that are purely aimed at the dance floor. it follows the previous, well received liber kult & liber temple 12s, these singles all lead to liber dogma, due on soma in october, and further chapters. high rise choir reprise opens with clattering percussion taken straight from recordings at forgemasters before a face-ripping gut-wrenching bassline cuts through with one of the black dogs strongest minimal grooves yet. built to move heads and feet, the hypnotic groove hooks you instantly while the haunting strings bring the emotion in massive dark waves, you cant help but fall into this track. beautifully simple, addictive and massive. dissident bleep is just that. over the years the myth that sheffield is all about bleep and bass has gathered ground but those who live here know its all about the bass. industrial repetition gives way to twisted vocal samples of >over, over<, a sure-fire nod to cabaret voltaire, before the kicks and filters pummel you.

after a handful of smashing remixes and compilation features on nang records, lusty zanzibar returns to the fold with a cracking solo effort named the >the feeling ep.< title track is a spaced out exercise in immersive square-wave programming, reminiscent of the pre-internet computer gaming age when colours were 8-bit and vivid, and soundtracks were hyper-colour opuses. the complex synth work is underpinned by a driving beat with ethereal vocal wisps and crystalline pads. nice. the first of three remixes for >the feeling< comes from ilya santana, with his >celestial version<, and celestial it is indeed! a picturesque scene is set, the rhythm is wound back and a super laid back vibe allows the vocal line >remember how you are feeling< to sit more purposefully in the mix, alongside the tip-toeing bass line and often euphoric chords. up next comes the max essa dub version, introducing some arp-synth subtleties, replacing the main vocal hook to great effect. to finish we have a mix from fear of theydon who brings a touch of arpeggiated femininity and tasteful woodblock percussion to the table. its a fulfilling yet sultry up-beat journey.

while yacht refers to >dystopia (the earth is on fire)< as a post-apocalyptic fight song and a cautionary tale, the tracks chant-along melodies and unsparing synths nudge listeners far closer to dance than despair. from the sound of things, that reaction will likely also be elicited by two new remixes of the portland duos song, from their 2011 long player shangri-la. legendary production duo justin strauss and bryan mette, aka whatever/whatever, completely rework the sound of >dystopia< on their version, reorienting it with heavy doses of funk. while the original rides atop buzzing synths, the whatever/whatever remix adds a thick bassline and shimmery keyboards that leap out like solar flares. on the flipside, uk-based emperor machine starts their dystopia remix with a dubby feel – every vocal echoing endlessly – and then u-turns into wholly a updated, yet classic, disco sound. the rhythms are sultry, slinking behind a deep, repeated, synthline, its a recipe for an unexpectedly smooth, subtly hypnotic, and utterly danceworthy song.

jimmy posters and huxleys new imprint saints & sonnets present their debut ep from production duo ethyl & huxley with the 3 feet high ep. deep, powerful and rounded deep house is on the menu for release number one as strong bass holds down light melodies and slurry vocals for an undoubtedly peak time record. electronic chameleon and self proclaimed dandy roman flugel is in for remix duty and his dubby mix 2 flirts with push and pull percussion and chopped vocal snippets for a delightfully experimental revision.

chicagos ricardo miranda makes his debut for the ace stilove4music label, maintaining a fine year in which he has already dropped some serious heat on rush hour sub-label hour house is your rush and his own noble square imprint. title track >102point7< is all jagged synths, throbbing arpeggios, slashing claps and a rolling acid groove, marking it out as one of his most incendiary productions to date. on the flip >rotary cells< is deeper still, a 909-led jacker with undulating layers of sub bass augmented by a wonderfully woozy vocal which extols the virtues of true chicago house. this is followed by >greenline<, a stripped back jam with scuttling hats and the kind of paranoid synth melody that wouldnt sound out of place in jeff mills something in the sky series. this is dark, raw, pulsating dance music - highly recommended.

after their superb release last year with >dinosaurs<, that came backed with two heavy paul woolford mixes, south german stars alex flatner & lopazz return to poker flat with three new essential cuts. >this< may sound like a curious title, yet the addictive low-slung, electronic funk within will have you chanting >i just wanna love you baby…< in no time! smooth, slinky production comes hand in hand with producers as experienced as this pair! the mysterious future-disco-funk magic of >hapbee< keeps the party stomping as a whole host of vintage gear flavours this cosmic beatdown. rolling and driving forward with relaxed, summery intent it is a seriously positive tune for those smiling, warm feeling moments. >its< offers a similarly challenging title but musically there is no messing around, with a shaking, simmering slice of modern funk characterised by tonal synth play, percussive splashes and echoed vocal madness - all dripping with funk!

fred de f original version is progressive, ultra-bumping, inspired from spanish soundings. the version releases body-heat and energy. great track for dancefloors. tom donax composes an aerial remix and explores a different universe: breakbeat soundings, vocal inspired from the nineties and presence of pads break the rhythmic bringing the record a nice equilibrium. cool version for a home listening.
