despite building their careers out of strikingly different musical places, both dbridge and radioactive man have taken influence from the field in which each other operate. dbridge (darren white) was part of the iconic drum & bass outfit bad company and he helms one of the scene’s most solid and quality imprints in exit records and radioactive man (keith tenniswood) was born from the acid house scene and the off kilter electronics of his two lone swordsman projects (alongside andrew weatherall) which led him to create his decidedly uk take on drexciyan electro. it’s by no means a stretch to learn that both producers have crates that contain their favourites from each genre but they’ve also found a mutual respect and connection in the studio over the last few years, leading to the dbrm moniker for craig richards the nothing special label.

zodiac wax is unlike other record labels. its founder, zodiac childs, initially conceived of it as a fictional alternative to dance music’s terminal timeline, an environment to nurture music which stands for escapism, music which atomises a story and gives that universe life. after an intimate creative gestation, childs introduces us to his band of digital misfits, whose myriad approaches to dance music are smelted together to form the catalogue of razor-sharp cuts that is faction.

casey tucker is on a roll at the moment, and his infectious brand of uplifting, full-fat machine soul seems to have struck a chord in many places (not least via his reissues on for those that knoe). after appearing on love notes back in 2015, tuckers back on the label with another salvo of colourful, charming and utterly magnificent house jams shot through with the inventive programming of techno. alternative faction is many things a bubbly acid track, a swooning deep house cut and a sassy broken beat affair and yet feels utterly smooth in its execution. that time of year has plenty of motor city soul feeding into its composition, not least in the gorgeous synth strings, and new mission gets busy in the swing with all kinds of bouncing melodies and rhythms.

charlie watts meets the danish radio big band is the kind of album that many jazz fans had probably given up hope of hearing. in the glory days of big band jazz and arrangers like oliver nelson coming up with brilliant music, albums like this were, if not commonplace, at least more readily available. the truth is there is nothing commonplace about this album, it is a sheer delight.
anyone who knows charlie, knows how much he loves jazz. a few years ago when he and i were looking at a photo of the stones playing in the 1960s he pointed at a particular cymbal and said, “i’ve still got that cymbal, but i don’t use it on stones’ gigs, it’s too good for them. i just use it on my jazz gigs.” there’s no doubt, that’s the cymbal you hear on the first part of the ‘elvin suite’.
charlie watts is one of the great ambassadors for jazz and every jazz lover will relish this record, and the fact that charlie is involved may bring jazz to the attention of some that are not sure if they like jazz. listen to this and you know you do.

oktave records returns for the third installment from the label, once again featuring owner and proprietor jeff derringer at the helm. the factions ep shows jeff at his most direct and robust, with three tracks of meticulously constructed techno. pressed on solid orange vinyl.

the 3rd release on alma negra records is dedicated to the music of eritrea, a small (in african terms, that is) country nestled in between sudan and ethopia on the south end of the red sea. drawing from its native spiritual roots as well as the christian and islamic influences of conquering factions, this multiethnical country is home to an amazingly diverse plethora of cultures and musical styles. on this ep, we are happy to showcase the music of the saho people from the region of zula, which is located in between the coastal lowlands close to the dahlak archipelago. the word saho roughly translates (translated?) as nomad, pointing towards a lifestyle where tradition and culture is being passed on orally over generations. the exact source for these edits of the saho sound are thus lost to the murky depths of history, as they are based on traditional folksongs

bnjmn presents body reflections pt.2 - the second step in his new, subdued and intricate sonic direction. the highly textured ambient dance music that characterized the first chapter released earlier this year seamlessly continues onto this new reference. each track on the ep introduces symmetry and rhythm in the form of organic percussion. whether lethargic and ethereal, blanketed with discordant melodies and arcing synth lines, or, more dance-oriented - with sophisticated interplays of percussive elements looping over soft harmonies. body reflections pt.2 is deeply illustrative of bnjmn’s ainity for creating nuanced and delicately balanced layers, and a culmination of his vast experience.

substrato records features techno veteran edit select on its most recent release, points of contact. the ep is in line with substrato’s signature sound – stripped down hypnotic percussion with deep ties to techno’s past. at the ep’s outset, edit select layers straightforward loops into complex textures, weaving careening synth lines through skittering hi hats and driving kicks. faction 1.1 brings the composition to a subdued close with warm, thrumming percussion that evokes a propulsive ethereality. at its fourth release, substrato has firmly established itself as a techno label adept at driving techno with psychedelic, shamanistic impulses.

3rd saste box set! gathering sounds from the experimental frontiers and outer edges of electronic music, stellate 3 collects together, kangding ray, nsi, xhin and reformed factions visions. the polished tracks are layered to the -nth degree, filled with minute details and whispered asides. these productions use an array of analogue machines and the most cunning digital means to vividly render disquieting questions.

eshu records returns, after a succesful first release, with a 4 track ep that shows the many sides of the techno spectrum eshu records admires. an excellent selection with tracks from mattias fridell, tomas rubeck, myles serge and imugem orihasam. a nice list of talented up and coming producers from all over the globe (sweden, detroit, uk, germany). smoking techno tracks with influences from detroit techno, duuby berlin sounds and more straight forward club bangers. worth the check!!

after ellen alliens album >dust< kicked up a lot of the same in 2010, it was only a matter of time until the right remixers for the album were found. no less than the creme de la creme of today s house scene was allowed to have their way with these tracks. and the results are more than fitting. although we have already burned a full-length cd containing all of the remixes they created, we are not planning on leaving the vinyl-loving faction (or whats left of them) out in the cold either. this 12 inch features three powerful club tracks from three outstanding remixers. each unrivalled in their own space.

duffy is possibly the most exciting prospect for 2008. her ascent from the llyn peninsula to 2008s pole position continues as the 23 year old releases her debut album rockferry. a masterclass in mature, resonant pop, the album includes the singles mercy and rockferry. her soulful voice has already beguiled many of the nations musical tastemakers and news of its beauty and of the strength of her songs is spreading by word of mouth now, as the comparisons fly (dusty springfield has emerged as the favourite), its time to discover her for yourself. duffy was born and spent her childhood years in the north wales coastal community of nefyn, a place too remote to be driven by style wars or opposing music factions. the upbringing she describes is one in which everyone had to rub along together, making do and mending, accepting each other and their tastes without prejudice.
