pal joey (aka joseph longo) came up in the heady days of new york street culture, amidst b-boying, boom boxes and an unusually entrepreneurial spirit of beat-making. beginning with crude �pause tapes�, he was soon making tracks with drum machines and sampled vocals, all painstakingly assembled with razors and reel-to-reel. working at vinylmania, where larry levan might be found shopping for records in his pajamas, helped joey�s entrance into the city�s nascent house music scene, and he was soon working with everyone from krs-one to sade to the orb, whose �little fluffy clouds� he tweaked for stateside tastes.

5 would be the key number for the brand new chateau flight release on versatile. its been 5 years since the last release and it took 5 days to record. nicolas (i:cube) was busy with his own material, i moved to amsterdam 3 years ago and as we like to make music in the same space. it took a bit of time but finally it s here, the dam house ep. i invited nicolas to visit me last winter, not to do music but just for a cool adam hang out. this turned into 5 intense days of fun production in my studio. it was amazing for both of us to witness how our connection remained intact after all those years and the ideas came really quick. the vibes of the tracks all turned out pretty different, it s a true chateau flight kaleidoscope with an epic 10mn techno track sargan, a more house vibe, crazy (dam house mix), a heavy dark funk drive of lo and the ambient crazy(ambient mix). this record would have not been the same without redlight records,to whom this records dedicated. james and abel left their shop open at night just for us and as children in a candy store we went through the racks looking for samples that formed the inspiration for this ep.

icelandic techno veteran yagya enjoys a release on x/oz that celebrates both new and old material. the tempo is noticeably ramped up on -one weak light- but never at the expense of that dark and mysterious icelandic hue. -existence is weird- is no slouch either, but yagya shapes out his atmospheres with such a refined touch that you barely notice how quick the tracks are running. -a very long daydream- is a gorgeous ambient track dug out of the archives, while -getting closer to an unknown goal- sees the re-release of a track yagya released as rhythm of snow back in 1999.

25 years of distillery. that�s a memory-laden, even historical event for underground and club culture. or let�s just say, culture in general. getting into detail about the impact, this club had for the last quarter-century, would fill a couple pages, so let�s just state the obvious real quick: distillery has witnessed and co-determined socio-cultural change and progress in its past. be it in its hometown leipzig, basically building up the city�s infrastructure for club culture over the years. or be it on national or international scale. it carries a legacy of being one of the longest-serving and one of the most influential clubs in germany. period.

highlife throws a curveball for its next release with a piece of kwaito from south africas dj call me. a track sweeter than irn bru, we first stumbled across marry me on the radio by the new york dj, sadaf. after a quick search, we found it on youtube with over a million views, only to discover it had been track of the summer(s) back in south africa at the start of the decade. almost a searching for sugarman moment. the track wasn�t available to buy in any kind of format, and so began an elaborate quest to track down the artist via his defunct facebook page. after many an unanswered email and a couple of years persistence, we finally managed to track down a manager still in touch with dj call me, and we�re now involved in some regular whatsapp exchanges with the man himself. after showing it to a select group of dj pals, it began to show up on the id of music facebook group, courtesy of plays by the likes of axel boman, hunee & kornel kovacs. last summer, auntie flo and andrew played at a wedding in beirut and this track got such a massive reaction that weve been dying to share it with you ever since

in late 2017, thomas gandey and danny mclewin - known from the popular disco-influenced electronic music collective psychemagik - emerged from their studio in bordeaux, france, claiming to have produced an extended musical arrangement, both entitled, and containing the sounds of, the shakuhachi. furthermore, they insisted, for the purposes of this production, and a further album of related arrangements to be released subsequently in conjunction with the successful german record label kompakt, they should be referred to henceforth as ghost vision. shortly thereafter, the audio recordings described by gandey and mclewin came into the possession of noted los angeles degenerate, dj and nymphomaniac citation needed dirty dave, who was quick to relay the hallucinatory qualities of the duo�s productions to fellow dj and trusted hallucinogenic expert paramida, of esteemed german musical imprint love on the rocks. paramida, recognising the innate quality of the sounds presented to her, decided that such recordings warranted immediate release through her audio distribution channel, and not without remixes. quite without thinking of the origins of the instrument which had given the recording its particular sonic distinguishment, and of course, its title, she enlisted the help of two musicians named alex - one from tokyo, and one from kyoto. both alex from tokyo - teaming up with his colleagues isao kumano & kenichi takagi as tokyo black star, known for their prior releases on popular german label innervisions - and his counterpart, alex from kyoto, better known as al kassian, rising tamagotchi on paramidas love on the rocks imprint, and his own label, planet sundae - turned in striking reinterpretations of gandey and mclewin�s composition.

nyc label homage continues a hot streak with their third project from uk producer jvxta (pronounced jux-tuh). after an excellent debut on his label hardmatter, jvxta gifts homage with four ny-inspired deep house cuts. brawn is an immediate tone setter. the banging stand-out made waves overseas prior to it s online premier thanks to cinthie, who pressed it to dub plate and played it as the opening track at her boiler room set in berlin. the remaining tracks offer a look into jvxtas unique tastes, and listeners will find themselves lost in quick-fire deep jazz, dreamy 80s tinged house, and a rolling tribal cut that we wished never ended. serious selectors take note, homage is not messing around, and this is a project that you ll reach for again and again.

new clouds material from calum macleod and liam robertson can mean only one thing: these things will go quick, and as you can imagine, you ll want to get them in your dj sets just in time for the nye debauchery. the duo land on british techno imprint overlee assembly, kicking the carnage off with a perc remix of tuned to a dead channel, something of a toxic headbanger with a gnarly bass at its core. this is followed by a much sleeker, more restrained tuned version of chained to a dead channel, and then by a jungle/breakcore driven version from headcore wreckage, and an acid-laden, drum-nutty hardcore tuned again version.

the second of alma negras 12 rhythms series is dedicated to the maloya sound from la réunion, a tiny island where a melting pot of cultures is reflected strongly in its music. maloyas roots go back to the time of slavery, its quick tempo and raw energy making it not only a popular dance music but also a powerful protest through movement. on their maloya ep, the basel collective pay tribute to the hypnotic rhythms that were feared both by the catholic church and the french government for the musical forms subversive part in the rebellion against colonialism.

yaleesa hall is back on his home label will & ink with two eps in quick succession. after releasing his debut album in 2016 this is the first solo output from the amsterdam based producer on the label. this first ep is entitled zoe hayley laura and features a trio of tracks that melt electro, techno and broken beats in arresting ways. opening up the ep is zoe price, a silky electro track with shooting synths and big downward bass strikes that add real depth. it s a urgent and arresting affair to wake up the floor. hayley roach then has much more forceful drums that come in one two punch combinations to the gut. synths writhe and gurgle up top as pads rise up and down the scale and the whole thing is brilliantly large. laura pomeroy then rocks back and forth on its heels, with train track like percussion and malfunctioning machine stabs. it s a real tussle between different elements and locks you right in as a result. once again then, the irrepressible yaleesa hall leads from the front.
