‘maita’ is a wonderful piece of warm, upbeat mpb from doris monteiro. originally appeared on her ‘agora’ lp from 1976, released by odeon.

paulino vieira, bana, and their legendary troupe, voz de cabo verde, made lisbon the headquarters spearheading the musical revolution taking place within cape verdean emigre communities across europe in the 1980s. musicians from across the diaspora would eagerly travel to the portuguese capital to record. but in smaller pockets, second-generation krioulu musicians were independently contributing to one of the most lush periods of cultural innovation by immigrants in europe. in 1986, a group of nine teenagers — antonio monteiro, ambrosio gomes, emilio borges, fefa cabral, to pereira, pedro varela, celeste monteiro, clarisse, germano shares — formed the largely unknown, often overlooked, but consistently brilliant band, pilon. combining traditional funana rhythms and the hybrid colazouk style with psychedelic synth work and rugged guitar ostinatos, pilon refined their sound for years until releasing these recordings as part of their debut album, tradicao, in 1993, with a tight-knit unit of just five remaining members. the band is still a popular mainstay for parties in the cape verdean circles of frankfurt, paris, lyon, marseille, rotterdam, and geneva.

after their stunning 2014 debut ep i.d., shadow movement, created by music producers raphael bartel and raul monteiro, return to the scene with their second single whales released by the label d.o.c. created by acclaimed producer gui boratto. whales was announced at ade (amsterdam dance event) on 2014 and has been long expected by music lovers. the new ep has two tracks: whales part one and its progression whales part two and is released on vinyl, in a limited edition. it will be the fourth release from the label d.o.c., the ep brings all the darkness and deep harmonies with a melodic touch the duo is known for, its an exciting step for the project and the label alike

the new bomb on echocord colour comes from nick höppner and scott monteith aka deadbeat. this is the first ep by nick höppner on echocord colour. nick is maybe most known as being the manager of one of berlins most infamous record labels, ostgut-ton, höppner may not always receive the same lavish praise as ostgut artists like ben klock, shed and marcel dettmann, but there is an argument to be had that he is the best of the bunch. höppner only releases sporadically, but whether it is solo or alongside lee jones as mymy, his records are always remarkable. the 2 tracks for this release are both peaktime tracks. deadbeat did the remix.
