as the title suggests, joakim recorded this new album last year at studio venezia, the installation/sculptural ensemble/recording studio created by xavier veilhan for the prestigious 2017 venice art biennale. built inside the french pavilion & inspired by the grotto-like merzbau by kurt schwitters, studio venezia had dozens of artists create and record there over the 6 months of the biennale (from chassol to brian eno, from joakim to sebastien tellier), invited by xavier veilhan himself with the help of co-curator christian marclay. with an impressive collection of rare instruments from medieval horns to rare modular synths (baschet crystals and percussions, a buchla, a clavinet...), studio venezia was an amazing creative playground for the adventurous musician. those instruments were captured by a team of sound engineers in the best possible way thanks to nigel godrich�s (beck, radiohead...) mobile studio loaded with state of the art vintage recording gear.

on 005 ken turns away from the light and invites you into the dark with adelaide�s furious frank, who dishes up a selection of psychedelic burners and formidable squelch. on this release frank pays tribute to the many mushroom picking spots in the surrounding hills of his hometown, and does them justice with an assortment of broken beats, affected drum flourishes and paranoid synths. over the course of the 5-tracker, frank presents sounds for the frayed final edges of a night out dancing, where shadows start to play tricks on the mind and each remaining track poses more questions than answers. none typify this nervous energy more so than a2 �dangerous dancer�, with it�s smoked out electro punctuated by a wailing 303 intended for dancers that may have gone too far, but are willing to take the next step.

orchestrating their return to kompakt with the much-acclaimed new full-length moonbuilding 2703 ad (kompakt 330 cd 124), iconic pioneers of electronic music the orb found fresh momentum in an enticing melange of psychedelic loops, deep textures and striving beats. the album saw the duo at the peak of its creativity, indulging in that distinct style of warped miniature epics they ve perfected, ever oscillating between ruminant sampling and propulsive jamming. with moonbuilding 2703 ad remixes / sin in space pt.1, we present three reworks willing to tackle the sonic thicket of the source material - and succesfully translating the orb s unique brand of musical insanity into their own resourceful idioms.

usually, the purpose of a piece like this is to tell other writers, music mag editors, distribution people and record shop clerks why they should like a certain release and buy, hype, review it. often these encomiums are not really honest and sometimes you even feel like attending an attempt to sell a flat tire. as for i:cubes new longplayer m megamix things are � of course! � very different. being its fifth solo album, an introduction of a man like nicolas chaix or even his biography (another popular brick of sales sheets) seems rather unsuitable. if you dont know what you should know, just use your internet search engine with any of these terms: chateau flight, versatile records, french touch, disco cubizm or parisian prodigy.
