cold recordings is very proud to include berlin based producer phon.o as part of it’s growing roster by means of this immaculate ep. across the 3 tracks, phon.o demonstrates his ability to combine uk- bass influences with techno sensibilities, ultimately crafting cutting edge music for the dancefloor.
‘clu5t3r’ opens the ep with a swinging 132bpm rhythm that sits somewhere in between classic uk-funky and a cracking shed/heads high techno anthem. the repeating riff that circles and cycles, sweeps through the frequency spectrum, energising and purposeful. versatile and effective, this is a track to come back to time and time again.
flip the plate and there’s another couple of gems. ‘v3r5u5’ continues on from where ‘clu5t3r’ left off, progressing the mood into a more ethereal space, building layers of pads and texture as the track developes, rising and ramping up, before pulling back and dropping into a rolling rhythm. closing up the ep is ‘h4ndcuff3d’, which takes the mood into a more dramatic backdrop. chilling pads swell up from the ground like mist in a graveyard, while the broken rhythm sets pace, creating a moody ambiance for those moments when you want to take a dancefloor into mystical, other-worldly territories. dramatic and energising!

nach seinem bpitch-debüt, der killer-maxi -velvet rag ep- (bpc316), kehrt der berliner produzent phon.o mit drei weiteren effektiven hybrid-tracks zurück. die -fractions ep- setzt sich mit dem hypnotischen drive von -run- in bewegung. bei 128 bpm geht es mit dem swingenden flow von -brooklyn shuffle- weiter. zum abschluss wartet mit -fractions- der emotionalere titeltrack, bei dem subsonische basslines und reduzierte percussion zunächst ein düsteres klangbild erzeugen, das spätestens durch die manipulierten vocals mit nachdenklicher melancholie konterkariert wird. zusammengefasst: phon.o is on fire right now!

burly, uk-styled rave tackle from berlin’s phon.o for tectonic after spending the last few years exploring subsets of garage-techno on 50 weapons. clearly carving towards tectonic’s ruder ‘floor criteria, he plays out the dank, shadow-boxing 2-step drums and swooping subs of mercurial next to the aggier grime slap of u8 phunk for the berlin scallies, and yokes some splintered breaks into a submerged jungle-techno chassis with bell blender.

lumière brillante has already been a big track for noir and nm2 in 2015/2016. now its pressed with phon.os fantastic remix for the vinyl release.

50weapons 41 ist die nummer zwei im grand finale des labels. kaum ist die nadel aufgesetzt, findet sich hier ein killer-paar von tracks, die auf nicht weniger abzielen, als den dancefloor komplett zu zerstören. mit tw33tz feiert phon.o den breiten katalog des labels von droniger darkness bis zu verschwitzter 10 uhr morgens euphorie. eine ganze spur darker als -tw33tz-, gießt paula temples superwaffe oscillate das destillat von techno in einen track mit einer kickdrum, die so staubtrocken komprimiert ist wie astronauten eis. eingebettet in einen magengruben subbass schält sich eine electro acid line in die gehörgänge und setzt sich im motorischen kortex fest.
