dubbed by igloo magazine as the -romanian detroit electro/techno pioneer- and by the late aaron carl as -the romanian underground resistance himself-, andrew red hand from romania s spiritual capital of lasi stands up as an unwavering militant of the underground, a true detroit spirit possessed as romanian humanoid! from his early gigs throwing parties as one of the first generation djs in lasi since 1997, arh continues to break boundaries as part of the romanian resistance scene and numerous time portals as they open around europe. his blistering, mind-bending sets such as at berlin s tresor and griessmuehle see the dj with the red hand fuse pure detroit electro and techno with the sounds of techno-bass, raw chicago acid house, classics and futuristic beats. his mixes for radio ur (underground resistance) and the grid (detroit techno militia) remain some of the best frequency transmissions to surface to air. armed with a soviet union reel to reel majak 203, his scorching raw analogue and searing acid productions have been picked up by foundational detroit labels such as twilight 76, matrix, detroit underground, databass, detroit techno militia, cratesavers intl, visillusion as well as around the world from holland s iconic m>o>s recordings to 1Ø pills mate (lobster theremin), bass agenda and land of dance. on his remix list includes work for scan 7, santonio echois, thomas barnett, sean deason, niko marks, six foe, t.linder and more while support from anthony shake shakir, dj bone, dave clarke, dj godfather has been garnered for our sonic warrior... beware of the red hand!

this double lp set is ensconced in a thick tip-on gatefold jacket splashed with a colorful spread of vivid archival imagery accumulated over a decade of research into the columbus, ohio culture. the liner notes serve as an in-depth history of columbus soul music, linking the capsoul label with the prix label and norman whiteside s wee project (recently sampled by kanye west).

punishment capital marks leo james return to his own label body language, after recent outings on neubau and berceuse heroique. the music is heavy and the feeling is deep.

i-lp-o in dub is the solo project of pan sonic member ilpo väisänen. capital dub chapter 1 follows the 2015 debut communist dub - a year marked by further descent into economic crisis and instability. the usual business cycles of production / distribution / consumption running alongside macro cycles of boom and bust have been replaced by ossification, austerity, the machine seizing up.
ilpo’s “circular riddims” complement the ebb and flow of the circulation of money + commodities and are mirrored by his field recordings of barcelona rain – the final phase of the cyclical movement of water. but of course the smooth running of “paradise capital” is unsustainable. destroyed techno and open spaces contend with sinister swarming atmospheres. a cash machine flickers. zeros and ones displace another factory. dub as decay – the ghostly remains of tracks eroded by time and technology. the “invisible hand” of the market spasms with tremors.
ferocious textural feedback as music for stock exchange crashes. the soundtrack to heaps of money hoarded by the hidden class. capital is value in motion, but there is nowhere to go. after the collapse, picturesque ruins. capital dub chapter 1 simply asks the question: what next?

capital bass continues to gather russian names under one roof and expand stylistic variations. next big thing is a three-track ep from ponty mython (alex). this is the second ep by sir ponty mython on capital bass. it has been two years since his bulletproof jesus ep in 2013. during these two years ponty mython has been working with such iconic house imprints as arma, quintessentials, dirt crew and others. his new adverbs ep is a quite eclectic thing. side a is a filtered house banger gracefully - a result of sampling games with moscow house star lay-far (local talk, in-beat-ween). side b - afterwards tune is a real one-loop thriller, dirty and raw, with african samples and invisible sub bass line. on b side you can also find a psychedelic version of afterwards by saint petersburg techno artist nocow (roots united, fauxpas musik). overdue re-issue of the longplayer from 1982 of this great uk reggae band. lp-vinyl has the original album track order and also for the first time on cd with seven additional tracks including john peel session tracks. the capital letters have reformed in 2013 and perform live again.

capital bass continues to offer an insight into moscows blooming bass music scene through releases from an auspicious and expanding family of local producers. following up the success of formally unknown s untitled ep is another tough and bottom-heavy package from close label friend and red bull music academy moscow member - pak0.

untitled opens up, building behind a gently reverberated 4/4 kick and interchanging hat sequences. hypnotic, off-kilter samples and subtle flecks of acid generate a brooding and purposeful tone as a sense pressure builds throughout.

ol aka oleg buyanov is well known in his native russia already. he has a background extending from releases on faces records and scuzzy lo-fi hip hop beats on labels like error broadcast, idle and fine grains dating back to 2007. more recently though he has been increasingly turned on by dance floor focussed sounds and as such, here come two missives on russias capital bass (which also hosts a popular bass and garage night in moscow and has done since 2006).
