after the very successful foray into split eps, luv shack records continues to explore this concept with luv013. the ep sees upcoming duo space echo make a return after their smash hit -soul power-, while the b-side is conducted by wahlberliner rotciv. -come back home-, the opening track by space echo, is a slowly building but effortlessly captivating piece of hypnotic house music with a raw funk attitude. the gently evolving synth line and the strong vocal hook are the spine of this anthemic track. the seemingly laid back -hangover- just oozes b-movie sleaze and might be space echos little hommage to 60 s lounge music, with an array of distorted guitars and soft pads coming to good use. that is until the synth theme kicks in mid-track and turns the piece into a late night weapon.

without struggle there is no progress. a lesson over four movements. raíz returns on droid with a follow up from keep secrets and degrees of motion eps. originally conceptualized some years ago during live pas, the struggle has been revamped and reshaped into four tracks all evolving from the title. as the ep unfolds, various degrees of emotion and musicality are displayed building up to the intense close on trilliance.

barely has the dust settled on the first cold tonic, yet label boss krystal klear is back already with two more heavy hitters for tonic002. building on the foundations of the debut release, dance 7fs shows a darker shadow rarely seen in previous krystal klear music. moving into lights out, eyes down territorywith the driving breaks of west end disco, this is kk stepping into his own. fumer tue features relics-esque string laden melancholy but never ever goes fully pg. this is r-rated lovers music and, if the feedback is anywhere near the mark, could easily go straight into last-tune-of-the-night-classic territory for the next generation of dance music connoisseurs.

leeds based label outcross records has been consistently building on its reputation as a reliable outlet for floor filling house music for a while now, and here returns with another red-hot package. this one comes from funky fat with remixes from label boss miguel campbell, mam and matt hughes.

while some of you might think of planet rhythm as one of those old labels from back in the day, it may not necessarily be the correct judgement. not only is it a product of its past achievements, but it is also pushing things forward in the present time, with woo york being one of a few new artists emerging from the imprints recent catalogue. that said, 2014 starts with ukrainian duo taking over planet rhythm headquarters as the labels proprietors and getting in charge of all of its future development. first out of press is the duos own ep highlighting their shift towards brand new, hardware-driven studio setup. from abstract tb-303-ish structures of acid rain, through the building peaks of analogue swamp, a perfect example of stripping functional techno, to come closers uplifting trance-y melodies and the closing sequence of strobe 1, this record is shaping up to be woo yorks strongest release to date.

although delivering a mysterious & scantily clad 12 inch is hardly a novel concept these days, we must confess to being more than a little excited when we heard this one! it is undercover time again, and we’re sworn to secrecy, of course… what we do know, however is that this mighty release is an absolute dancefloor sureshot! made up of two long, pitched down and utterly mesmerising workouts kicking off with itaque putant, a mid-tempo, tripped out disco number that marries elements of techno, late 80s balearia and more than a nod towards classic red zone dubs. super low subs and bags of melodic atmosphere conspire to provide a perfect dancing under the stars moment. on the flip timento is a lysergic, tribalistic epic, stitching together a series of ethnic ingredients and overlaying some seriously transcendent modern synth candy. building into the soundtrack for a full blown shamanic vision! a serious platter then, and when the music is this good, who needs more?

brett johnson makes his second appearance on the mighty visionquest imprint with a superbly nuanced ep the secret place. packed full of rhythmic and melodic complexities, johnson embarks on a supersonic head trip for the senses. lead track the awakening is awash with eerie keys and a building framework of warping fx, clicks and bleeps, all pulled together by the emphatic groove. on the flip, voyage 34 feat. ryan is a rolling, hypnotic and futuristic odyssey with the tougher edge of techno and ryans creepy, disembodied voice. finally you can count on me indulges in an intricate, percussive groove with glitchy machine tech funk.

maricopa returns to back to the balearics to complete his stunning opus, pastel love. and he continues where he left off building deeply textured songs packed full of simple melodies that really shine. his music opts for subtle feelings and passing vibes over the more obvious structures of dance music. the release of part one led to a number of comparisons with the early work of aphex twin as well as more contemporary producers such as four tet. such comparisons dont come lightly, but pastel love demonstrates that a rare musical talent has arrived. the release again has beautiful printed covers and looks as good as it sounds. viva maricopa!

several years ago, valentin stip was sitting alone by a harbor in the small french town where his parents grew up. >i heard all the sailing strings hit the masts, and i realized that every sound you hear is potentially music,< he says. >the only thing that makes sound into music is the mind, arranging it.< since then, valentin stip has been building a bridge between the sounds that live inside and outside his head.

the third in the modular techno series from live analogue artist and freerotation organiser steevio. after 15 years of producing techno live on hardware, in 2009 steevio began building a dedicated machine on which he could totally improvise an entire techno performance from a blank canvas that far surpassed anything he could do with his previous setup of drum machines and synthesizers. steevio’s modular is 100 analogue, there is no computer involved, there are no memories to save sounds or sequencing patterns, and everything is improvised in real time.. volumes 1 and 2 of the series were just a taster of what was to come, and were the early experimentations on steevio’s newly built machine. steevio records everything he does, especially during the intense practice sessions for live gigs. all the music in the series are out-takes from these practice sessions, and the tracks from volume 3 and the forthcoming volume 4 all come from a three day period in practice for a recent live gig at delete, bournemouth, uk. volume 3 continues from where volume 2 left off but delivered with more confidence and a deeper more hypnotic feel. steevio continues to develop his skills and fine tunes his unique instrument in this dedicated for life project.

lorca kick starts 2014 with forgive me love / naoko, his debut release on breachs (aka ben westbeech) naked naked imprint, joining the ranks of dusky, dark sky, midland, mak & pasteman and westbeech himself. the two-track ep follows up lorcas highly acclaimed 2013 if i told you ep on 2020 midnight visions, and his stellar remix of ghostpoets cold win which received widespread support, with midland tipping it as quite possibly the remix of the year. with highly lauded releases on dummy, throwing snows left_blank imprint and church, lorca has made a strong impression in the two short years he has been producing. his superb cant see higher / missed me ep in 2012 on dummy was the turning point, transforming him from a promising young talent into an exceptional one, gaining support from the likes of bonobo, rob da bank, deetron and scuba… this latest release meets building expectations, both tracks incredibly smooth, nostalgia-inducing and heavily textured, solidifying lorcas unique sound.

geddes returns to mobilee, an invitation to inject another dose of londons elegant toughness and atmosphere into the berlin label.waiting masterfully keeps the listener on the edge, teasingly building momentum with measured intensity. as it gallops into its stride it finally reveals itself as a work of rhythmic tension and hedonistic release. hypnotic.

valcrond video, the label of brooklyn-based visual artist and producer luke wyatt presents its very first vinyl issue in the shape of two new tracks from torn hawk, one of wyatts aliases. first coming to the fore in a musical sense with a set of distressed guitar and asphalt beat attacks on the lies white label series, torn hawk has been closely associated with ron morellis label ever since with wyatt subsequently working with karen gwyer, secret circuit and willie burns. distancing himself a bit from the grime and grit some associate with his productions, the two new tracks have more in common with the more expansively voiced compositions on emotional response release teen hawk, or the cinematic melancholy of the untitled ep he released under the alias lossmaker. clearly wyatt is building towards housing all his musical instincts under one roof.

after serving up a vigorous taste of his garage-house approach on the highly successful music is love va earlier in the year, jackmaster k is the latest artist from the mil roster to continue the imprints in-house premise. with each ep the label release, they give us something different amid the infectious house theyre building a reputation for. on mil006 the birmingham-based producer adds to the labels progressing status, with an ep that comes complete with two heavy-weight remixes from liam geddes and new jack city.

pareto park presents the first collaboration between george lanham and david meiser with the pair serving up a blend of abrasive modern techno and classic influences. the opener distress sets the tone and grabs the listener from the start with its moody vocals punctuating a sinister beat. lanham s cabot cove syndrome hits hard with a growling synth lead, pushed forward by a building siren. whilst rising entropy and co operation 1 both reveal the duo s mills influences, yet aimed at modern club play. a strong ep with the vinyl release featuring 4 additional locked grooves.

murphy jax, over the past few years, has been steadily building up a back catalogue of solid electronic workouts. delivering content for the likes of clones jack for daze series, hypercolour, exploited and turbo,jaxs style meanders through a variety of styles, ranging from low-slung, chuggy grooves through to straight up chicago inspired house rhythms, always keeping the production intriguing and melodic. here murphy joins the chiwax roster (a sub-label of rawax, also running the dubwax and housewax labels), alongside heavy hitters like gemini and perseus traxx.

the fat dog label returns for its second outing with yet another confident four tracker designed for both the head and the feet. the proceedings begin with the sublime moonrunners. introducing contributions from new artist spooner, the production duo use their hardware to take us to the very craters with this bubbler of emotive deep techno with dissonant house touches, d link (fat dog & ny*ak) continues the basement feeling with urnogud4me, albeit at a slower tempo but still keeps the floor burning with an unsuspecting, intense voodoo-house mystery. this is raw club music. side b we head straight onto a greasy dance floor called werk. lush pads intermingle with breathy flute stabs while the building groove consistently nags attention from your feet. stop teases us back onto the slo-mo dance floor yet again with another scorching deep house groove for the hips with a subtle funk to be desired at the disco as well as the deep room. limited copies!

roskas shocking ep is the latest release from the long-running rinse producer and his firstfor the label since last years rinse presents: roska2 lp. it finds the uk innovator on his usual fiery form, drawing for his characteristic deftly swung percussion and grime-infused sub-bass pressure. the explosive title track is the most overtly grimey roskas sounded for some time, slow-building intro giving way to a pulsating bassline and caustic laser blasts.

real house master phil weeks makes his debut on guy gerbers supplement facts imprint with a trio of dancefloor bombs packed with his signature bump, funk and bass. title track sharks looking for fishes is a fuzzy, warm affair with warping pads and shimmering cow-bells building with dusty samples combined with a jacking bassline. on the b-side bees assault is pure heads down techy business, unhinged and driving its the peak time banger of the release and an assault on the senses. lastly, hold onto the memories brings back the french deep touch with another solid jacking groove and faded vox.

dedicated to the rozelle warehouse, a decrepit building in a forgotten corner of memphis tennessee, where bassbins shook ancient dust from the walls, lives were forever altered, and one guy took way too much acid.
