british dj/producer bearface has been on a bit of a roll of later. aside from releases on his own beartone label, the london-based label owner has also found time to deliver outstanding cuts to the likes of exploited ghetto, which housed his last release, the wonderful moon . this time around, he comes correct on his own beartone label with a record that s notable for its quirky demeanour and undoubted eclecticism. opening up the release is the sounds of mumbai nights . although it gets us underway in fairly innocuous fashion, it quickly finds its feet thanks to a brilliant, whaling indian-inspired vocal that weaves in and out throughout. a whimsical track of that sort that s sure to be a hit with more daring djs, it s an auspicious start to a release that s never lacking in personality. as is his forte, bearface then goes much deeper in search of kicks on data storm , taking us taking us down the rabbit hole to a place that s full of enticing oddities throughout. after this, the frankly bonkers sound of the electro-leaning title track sista take centre stage. a thoroughly intense peak-time workout, it s full of attitude and an indication of the producer s more gnarly and abrasive approach. all things considered, it s sure to get the night moving in an altogether different direction wherever it s unleashed. closing out the ep is the drum heavy sounds of march . a broody track that s tailor made for the night s more relentless moments, it s a a fitting way with which to sign off an eclectic and dizzying release. the latest chapter in the beartone story is a captivating listen throughout.

salvador breed and stijn van beek met while studying sound design and music technology in 2006. ever since then the pair have been beavering away behind an arsenal of blinking banks in amsterdam. the musical fruit of their friendship is breek, a partnership that smears the boundaries of styles and sounds with festive flare and a rainbow steaked uniqueness. for their vinyl debut yokai, a candy coloured cornucopia of elements are swirled and whirled. braindance, electronica and neo-classical are festooned with dubby tones and underground grit in a unique sound of diverse textures and deep tones. faster works, like the swooping joy of yokai, are countered by more contemplative ama. hang is a whimsical dreamscape of squirming acid lines, crisp drums and angular notes that combine to produce a brilliantly bright piece. mu-onna and oiwa are more abstract works that melt vocals with sweet strings before the final piano swells and ambient rains of burabura. a daring and dynamic vinyl debut from this eccentric duo with stunning artwork from warren du preez and nick thornton jones.

roy davis, jr. s undaground therapy muzik label relaunches after almost 20 years with al zanders guidance ep. al zanders approach to his first ep of 2018 is as precise as it is whimsical. featuring 4 tracks showing zanders sheer versatile when it comes to making music. opened by piano-percussion track martha s revenge which is made so clearly for dance floors, followed by television, a chance for a closed- eyes boogie be it on a dance floor in the middle of a set, or on the sofa at home. on the b-side, likes for cash s comedic title is met in contrast with a piercing synth top-line and stripped back drums, with just enough of a bassline to sit in-between the drums and synths. closing the ep is guidance, a reflective and a chance for the ep to close as well as it would close a dance floor when the lights come on at the end of the night.

in a new transatlantic partnership, uk label secret reels and washington, dc imprint better listen records have teamed up for a run of collaborative records. the joint brand, secret listen, combines the labels in sound as well as in name. imagine the lush, pensive and moody deep house tones of secret reels joining with the sample-heavy disco soul leanings of blr. secret listen vol. 1 takes two artists each from both rosters for the first amalgamation. the -secret side- hosting english producers harry wolfman and chocky, while the listen side invites sune and vitamin d of high hat appreciation society and the newly founded honey butter records to the affair. it s a v/a release with a variety of offerings and flavours. wolfmans floozy sits first in the record as a bright and whimsical flute-led morsel, while chockys inner disco is a cerebral, loopy cut. on the flip, sune provides some exquisite rhodes action in his groovy midtempo effort, glidin, and his swedish compatriot closes out the affair with the bittersweet lately.

austin ato is the latest project from colin bailey, the multi talented producer from oban in scotland who has been the man behind the drums of death moniker since 2008, and has also recorded under the frankie dreams and coba aliases. with forthcoming material also due on phonica white, ato lands on futureboogie with the massive feel good vibes of music will save the day, backed with two superb remixes from auntie flo and christophe. featured here are two original mixes of music will save the day. the dub mix the is classic house music jam, packed full of energizing musical flourishes, from the balearic tinges of the sequenced mallet riff, whimsical pads and booming bassline to the searing crowd chant and the joyous piano motif. ato displays some serious musical chops here, which are further enhanced on the vocal mix with the addition of a bi-lingual vocal hook that will surely act as a call to arms on any discerning dancefloor. on the auntie flos hidden garden remix, the huntleys & palmers mainstay strips things right back for a beatless excursion, letting the percussive elements drive the forward motion whilst the melodies and thick synth pads wash over like crashing waves, a great reinterpretation by brian dsouza aka auntie flo. futureboogies very own christophe provides the second remix, tweaking an acid riff over a heavy, old school drumbeat and teasing in the musical elements, providing a tougher and more jackin take on the original mix, whilst keeping faithful to the original vibe.

that cyberpunk chameleon of styles, manchester’s pride and dancefloor master ruf dug is back on wax on copenhagen’s music for dreams. following up the first 12” of remixes that came out last year, we once again re-visit the island life of monsieur ruffy and his debut full length album “island” (recorded during a sojourn on guadeloupe). first up we have italians on the mix. hi-jacking ruffy’s tribute to wally badarou, leo mas and fabrice opt to do their own thing: which is churning out a bouncing house belter of their own that bears little resemblance to the original lo-fi synth reverie. closer to the original then, is fellow mancunian andi hanley’s take on the same track. adding sparse percussion and and a simple but effective drum beat, this take seems to simply be an uncovered second half of the original, where it finally takes off for the dancefloor. “mangrove dub” is reworked by fresh-on-the-scene aussie producer tropical hi-fi who creates a brilliant version full of moist ambient textures and reverb-heavy dub treatments. at last but definitely not least, seahawks turns the whimsical hippie folk ballad “le rayon vert” into a more intense and neatly dressed affair, focusing on the instrumental parts and lifting aside vocalist nev cotte’s contribution to the original. still with a mindful of tropical dreams and the ocean shore close at hand, but in a more introvert vini reilly kind of way. essential package.

repress 2017 , allez! as the curtains come down on another crazy summer of love, apollonia drop their latest release courtesy of io mulen - the ukranian rude boy who appeared on the label at the beginning of the year with ‘unknown to the unknown’. he’s back with a hefty six-track package which is sure to please his fans, and win him a whole new army of supporters. we get straight to business with the first track, ‘rdm37’, one of those trusty apollonia bouncing bombs. skittish beats work off a sublime groove, while io keeps the background full of interesting sounds, boings, cheeps and all manner of whimsical effects, introducing more and more as the track progresses. by the midpoint you’re so gripped by the track that your whole body is moving uncontrollably, super glued to the rhythm. next up, it’s ‘xdt54’ coming through with a deep, persuasive bassline that jigs around in the low end luring you into its web. simple, polished percussive elements keep things moving at a pace while subtle keys and barely-there vocals add further layers to this catchy little number. the third track in on this lengthy ep is ‘mpc13’, a walk on the sensual side. vocal snippets are interspersed among sultry pads, skipping four to the floor beats and a sleazy b-line to create a delectable slice of dance floor naughtiness. this one flirts with you as it writhes around, taking you ever deeper…four tracks in we have ‘zgb41’, another alluring cut that has all the hallmarks of a deep house classic. those shimmering pads, a bassline that feels like it was born in nineties chicago, diamond-cut beats and a general feeling of what we would call ‘true house music’. there’s soul, there’s funk and there’s realness, what more can you ask for?ypt58’ keeps us locked in to that hypnotic groove with an insistent b-line holding things down - together with the infectious rhythm cultivated by the drum arrangement, it’s a killer combo. put those together with the smooth atmospherics plus synth lines staggering in and out of the background and you’ve got yourself a roller. last but definitely not least is ‘zxy22’, a wistful slice of technoid funk which has a delicate melody at its foundation. as it develops we get sucked in to layer upon layer of beauty, from the analogue low end to the electric guitar riff – each layer complementing the other and creating a symphony of sounds that acts as a perfect way to close out the ep and will no doubt end plenty of dj sets, when it’s released. so monsieur io (mulen) returns to apollonia with an instant classic, make sure you snap it up right away. magnifique!

home invasion is the new label from real tone man franck roger, a man whose career has scaled the full depths of house music over the past decade or so. evidently seeking a new challenge, the parisian s new imprint promises to adhere to a vehemently underground way of working, with every ep upfront released on vinyl-only terms and produced exclusively on analogue equipment. ogers re-tracing of his roots pays dividends too, and whats most striking about the labels debut outing, the simply-titled home invasion 02 ep, is how very different it sounds to vintage real tone planes. gone are the whimsical, celestial deep house hues so favoured by the latter, and in there place is a series of cuts that expertly toe the line between house and techno without resorting to generic soundscapes

desolat is happy to announce a new 12inch by giuseppe cennamo. born in naples, italy in 1980, giuseppe took to the turntables at age 13. following the legacy of fellow napolitanos like marco carola, danilo vigorito and davide squillace, he took the inspiration of classic house and melodic synths to build his own brand of tech. his tracks on several labels got a lot of peak time play and caught the ears of loco dice. fortuitously, after a break to clear his head, mr cennamo decided to take the inspiration of a loco dice dj set to create something specifically tailored for desolat, which resulted in this release.this particular slice of vinyl is aimed squarely at the djs - with the title track amanecer digging deep into the pads, a cantering kick and gentle swing that hints at detroit forefathers. cuando tu quieres stomps its heels and morphs into a very whimsical bouncing house burner: plenty of fun to be had with this one. dejame asi feels like a spaghetti western re-imagined with the help of a conical moving laser beam, a childrens choir and a bag full of kazoos while the rest of nothing is a reduced, pinocchio-like percussion-driven track with an insistent bassline

being a product of the age it was written, slow clubs 2009 debut, yeah so, dealt with the all too familiar space between adolescence and the oncoming storm of adulthood. a boy-girl duo who played a flower-adorned chair live, they were the polar opposite of what was coming out of post-arctic monkeys sheffield. slow club were fun, cute, whimsical and all manner of other words just shy of twee - and they hate being called twee. paradise, however, is where the duo grows up. two years on, it stumbles out of a trivial, self-indulgent teenage malaise (where sexual adventure was priority for most) and carries itself with a sense of perspective that only adulthood can give - a darker, more thoughtful view of the world. for instance, on the poignant you, earth or ash, a song about rebecca taylor s granddad, her melancholic vocals (beautiful, as always) evoke an awareness of mortality for those around her: singing -and i know, soon you ll go,- her voice seemingly breaks under the weight of premature grief. whereas even love-wise (an inspiration every band draws from) slow club s lyrical output is glossed with a more mature and detached sense of sauce, with taylor crooning on where i m waking: -i can see you looking at me / you got the brains i ve got the body-.
