the true definition of a “rare-groove”, “windy city theme” is a triumphant, funky paean to the spiritual home of the blues, jazz and house music. often closely guarded by the rare record cognoscenti this scarce 45 on the chi sounds label was originally released in 1976 and became a solid staple of london’s underground rare-groove scene, finding favour with dj’s like norman jay and giles peterson with the track even appearing on their groundbreaking “journeys by dj” mix. b-side cut “show me the way” is not to be overlooked either, a smooth, stepping soul number with lush orchestration and yearning vocals featuring the amazing arrangements of the chi-sound orchestra, sounding like a beautiful cross between mfsb and marvin gaye. an utterly essential 45 for any serious soul or funk fan, legitimately repressed and remastered with love on dinked 45 for 2016.

with releases on rush hour, mister saturday night and delusions of grandeur, nebraska is a man who needs little introduction. here, he delivers and amazing ep for heist, showcasing his talent for finding those catchy, but hard to pin-down samples. the soften the wireless ep navigates nicely between disco and house with 4 originals and an amazing tom noble remix. khans bargain will be the go to track the more disco minded listeners out there, with a catchy-as-hell synth line that you wish youd made up yourself. the remix, courtesy of nycs finest disco selector tom noble, goes on a clubbier path, turning the silky smooth original into a distorted house jam full of delays and filtered drums. the b-side sees nebraska turning towards the housier side of things himself, with the blues as a perfect example of minimalistic house. here, he uses only a small amount of elements to create an intoxicating and intense groove. it wont be long breezes through with a lighthearted arpeggio and some lovely dreamy vocals to set a more emotional vibe. ep closing track (digi only) varkala is somewhat of a special track, being dug up from an old hard disc and remastered for your listening pleasure. sincerely yours, lars & maarten

longstreth lud bombino in sein applehead studio in new york ein, um gemeinsam an “azel” zu arbeiten. und dabei erwies sich longstretherwies als fantastischer produzent. er hat großen respekt vor der musikalischen tradition der tuareg und führte die sessions mit sanfter und geschickter hand. fans von bombino und tuareg-musik werden ein paar bemerkenswerte innovationen auf diesem album entdecken. die erste neuerung ist die einführung eines völlig neuen stils, für den bombino hier pionierarbeit leistet. die sonnige mischung aus blues/rock und einem reggae-onedropandbounce-beat nennt er liebevoll “tuareggae”. eine weitere neuerung ist die erstmalige verwendung von westlichen vokal-harmonien in tuareg-musik-aufnahmen (durch longstreths einfluss), was den songs eine völlig neue tiefe und farbe verleiht. “azel” ist der name einer kleinen wüstenstadt, nur ein paar kilometer von agadez entfernt

es ist der person von george mitchell zu verdanken, dass viele klassische blues-aufnahmen entstanden und bis heute archiviert und verbreitet werden. ab 1976 arbeitete mitchell für das bureau of cultural affairs in atlanta, und er begann das land zu bereisen, um folk- und blues-musik systematisch mit einem mobilen aufnahmegerät einzufangen und zu dokumentieren. durch seinen langjährigen persönlichen einsatz sind klassische blues-alben wie dieses von furry lewis entstanden. “good morning judge” erscheint nun erstmals auf vinyl. furry lewis stammt aus memphis, tennessee und ist als blues-gitarrist und songwriter mit diesem album berühmt geworden. zweimal wurde er von den rolling stones eingeladen, um deren vorprogramm zu bestreiten, und er spielte an der seite von burt reynolds in einem spielfilm namens “w.w. and the dixie dancekings”.

kenny summit s dirty lowdown and sunshine boogie spent some time atop the digital charts and have been remastered for your vinyl spinning pleasure. nudisco party anthems in their own right, both tracks have become go-to jams for the leaders in the genre. house legend, lenny fontana has been making underground classics for the past 30+ years and his bump track shows why this man has been running things for so long. timmy vegas & the boogie down deejays rework one of the all time paradise garage classics, turning funk to stank and spank to spanky. pressed on limited purple vinyl get em while they re hot!!

ark & pit spector continue their inspired journey with an extended ep full of groovy jams and absorbing rhythms for hold youth. the frenchmen have formed a potent alliance with a series of expertly-crafted, high-quality releases dropping over the last couple of years. on this new ep they go deeper into their sound explorations with five original works and a remix from their parisian buddy and hold youth member, le loup. first up, we go into bumping jazzy territory with ‘chauffage central’, a mesmerising cut with swirling pads, soulful vocal clips and a jaunty b-line. straight up after that, hold youth rudeboy le loup gives ‘chauffage central’ a funky little rework, throwing live sounding percussion, nubian vocal clips, trumpet parps and a pumping bassline into the mix which gives a totally different identity. the final track on side a, is a cheeky teaser called ‘petite ondée’. rolling out for just under two minutes the track has a muffled, jazz-esque feel to it with a warm rolling bassline and bright, sparkling piano keys. on the flip we kick off with ‘air conditionelle’, a lush, retro feeling with those oh-so-familiar heavy-hitting eighties snare licks. the bassline takes you to a new york city street and the whole atmosphere is that of an old school nyc neighbourhood, while a spoken-word sample adds a human touch just before the track comes to an end. ‘sub tropical’ goes a little leftfield with an unusual combination of sounds in tandem with a pulsating low end, occasional sax licks and punchy percussion to give it plenty of energy. ‘averse et contre tous’ closes out the ep with a slothish ride into the sunset – ark and pit spector show their experimental side presenting an odd union between blues samples, gruff electronic sounds and piano keys. another triumphant effort from ark and pit spector, in fact, some of the finest work to date. make sure you check it out!

with two releases already under his belt on clone, gary gritness aka slikk tim lands on hypercolour with the sugar cane chronicles vol. 1. gritness may be a relatively new name on the block, but his session work for artists like kenny bobien, louie vega and grant nelson has marked up this multi-instrumentalist as a clear talent. hailing from france, gritness had been spotted by underground resitances mad mike banks as one to watch, and on his hypercolour release, displays a deft hand of producing futuristic funk sounds. a spot on blend of raw drum programming and blissfull jazz funk riffs, preachin some tight game sets the eps tone just right with its infectious melodies and cruising groove. darker 1980s soundtrack vibes are explored on stayin strong hand with its thick analogue atmosphere, whilst the laid back and freestyle vibes of working girls demands to be played in the cadillac with the top down! ep closer, fly shit, continues with the tranquil melodies and g-funk factor.

french producer juliano delivers the next ep, entitled * this must be...*, on his own imprint * that place records*. fourth in line on the label, following on from releases from visitors for reworks, mzkbx (aka sacha mambo) and love comedy, the now berlin-based artist gifts his very first ep to the collection. as a dj, juliano has spent the last 13 years honing his craft - first cutting his teeth holding down a residency at l ambassade, and then going on to play all over france and throughout europe. over a decade of digging and spinning has led juliano to develop a refined palette and a knack for finding tunes that make the dance floor bounce. strongly influenced by us house, * panaugust* is a real dance floor killer with its never ending synth. the more emotional * anthem for a friend* is a real tribute, drawing inspiration from chicago and detroit such as the real mess with its special rhythm & blues vibe. finally, cupid mess brings a touch of japanese mood, evoking images of an early-morning rising sun thanks to the classic juno6 sound. julianos ethos is that music should stay fun - preferring to keep things simple, but always real. watch out for this one.
