the yore captain returns to his own yore imprint on the labels 21st release. shadow city presents different visions of funky house grooves. the a sides the y theme gets deeply moving with a funky house pulse before stoking the fire with the addition of speaking voices (trippingly intoning the q&a what are we doing this for? and the music), a move which single-handedly jumpstarts the track. after the voices appear, the grooves intensity escalates and plunges deeper, its gyroscopic house swing becoming more dizzying and torrential with each passing bar before coming to an acidy storming end. in its opening moments, shadow city opts for a deeper and more serenading vibe by comparison, but thats traded in for a slinkier attack at the three-minute mark that grows progressively more ferocious as the track makes its drastic upwards ascent. a trippin dangerous murder weapon to say the least. watch your heads! the b sides b2 track, mumbai dweller keeps the focus primarily on the bottom end, specifically a strutting tribal-house funk groove thats dragged even deeper by a throbbing bass undertow, adding dark chords to it, giving this ep a darker feeling towards the end. to sum it all up: this is raw house music at its best!

2009 was a great year for these days records, and 2010 promises to be even better. the platform stood out for its innovative yet functional club sound and unique artwork concepts. the new year begins with a new split series under the name universal consciousness, based on the idea of connection between all things, and that all things have been coordinated, and they combine to make up the same universe. the first part is dedicated to two very different takes on spiritual, cosmic space techno. on the a-side argys >sometimes im blind< generates a long and uplifting emotional climax, which features a solo that will forever stay in your heart. the track was recorded at the end of 2008, and despite numerous offers to release the record elsewhere, nothing was finalised and the recording never saw the light of day. soon after the birth of his own label, it naturally fit the platform and seemed a perfect way to start the new year. on the flip side, sheffield born alexander ross, brings forth a cavernous techno piece awash with reverberation and spacial echos that brings a driving yet non the less emotionally captivating moment perfectly in balance with the depth of the a-side.

our man ryo murakami sends over the next transmission in his exciting and growing catalogue of productions. always inspired by the raw and soulful sound of chicago and new york, this next ep puts forward his vision and continuation of this timeless house feeling. lead track >just for this< is a wonderful celebration of heavy slow motion house. classic house references and even a few classic samples meet in a dirty, deep ride into the tweaked out and extended vibes of the late night people. a journey through the city of house, a perfect refl ection of the times, bringing warmth and light in a once colder world. graeme clark aka the revenge, a fi gure who has enjoyed much success with his deviant disco sound, steps up for remix duties - and a fi ne job he does too! building his mix from the bare bones, adding a little more pace and forward momentum, his version is also tightly bound within the roots of emotional, deep vibes house. this is an outstanding remix - functional, clear and fully devoted to the classic sound. on the b side a mysterious original, >untitled<, sees ryo pushing things a little further still. the energy levels climb higher and higher as this modern hypno-houser phases and pulses upwards over nearly 8 minutes of jacking, sample laden freshness. we love to visit ryos house, where everybodys welcome and theres smiles all round

fergie and excentric kicking off the year with ragaroo, a tense builder, winding things up to an uncontrollable level with a mixture of rising and just plain strange sounds, with the usual high production standards that you expect from a fergie track. on remix duties is jus phil (monu digital), who returns to the excentric after his shuffling and bass heavy remix of fergie - break-out from earlier in the year. his take introduces a low slung yet bouncy groove, hooking listeners in before using the weird craggy effects of the original to really take things to a new level of twistedness

rainer trueby with his first 12 for compost black label - and yes, an album will be due in late 2010 as well. this 3 track ep was co-produced by his new studio partner danilo plessow aka motor city drum ensemble. livin in the music features vanessa freeman contains the same well known rhodes chords as his recent bootleg to know you.

tonbaumeister’s love for electronic music roots deep in the late eighties when he got his first computer, a commodore c-64, and when he instantly fell for the distinctive sounds of its sid chip. always driven by this passion he since then devoted himself to producing electronic music on various computing platforms and with multiple different programs to discover and soon constantly reinvent his own style. growing up in hessen, in the very heart of germany, he was deeply influenced by the endlessly evolving styles of house music and techno, which shaped the face of the vibrant club culture in cities like frankfurt and kassel. although tonbaumeister’s style might prematurely be declared as house music, the diversity of his productions makes it almost impossible to put them in a box and label them. his energetic tracks range from straight house to tech house to almost dark technoid characteristics, but suddenly one finds oneself surpr ised by the aforementioned sounds of late eighties computer games embedded in a psychedelic landscape with rough sawtoothy baselines. as hard as it is to pin down his production style, it is even harder to label his dj sets, which, as well as his productions, constantly evolve and morph while mirroring all of tonbaumeister’s influences. since 1999 he developed a passion for djing and he has had the chance to transport his enthusiasm into a number of clubs, infecting many clubbers with his verve. at the moment he is about to launch his own label subclinical

joe clausell pays his respect to the king of pop with this great house rework with overdubs

its been a while since i:cube hasnt deliver some fresh cuts! was he lost in a software??? hes back (a new album is also scheduled) to his early naive, deep and twisted spirit, but with a super tight modern production... falling is a sleazy funk track, a slow burner, which contains all the elements who made i:cube one of the most respected and innovative producers around since more than a decade!! heavy groove, hypno bassline, references to the early disco-dub music. un dimanche sans fin (neverending sunday) was done (as its name says) a sunday night, one shot, at the versatile studio. cube reconnects with his seminal dub-techno love, a track full of space and emotion. i would describe operation hypnosis as sheffield house. a solid beat and some bleeps will bring the dancer into a mental spiral...

the voyage continues. after dropping his debut album voyage direct, tom trago now drops two favorites from his live set. side a is an extended disco version of use me, morphing in to and out of the original like butter. clocking over 8 minutes use me again becomes somewhat a modern take on the original disco version. its got enough drive to make a dance floor go crazy. side b meanwhile is an exclusive from his live set. here he strips the classic >over & over< to the minimum before sliding into the original groove only for a moment, only to continue to ride the rhythm again. proper club business

dollkraut aka pascal pinkert is back with another great ep after his previously successful release >cheveux noir< on sound architecture. once again he shows his ability to produce a unique blend of house influenced by soul and jazz. loaded with warm and analogue sounds paired with his intuition for solid vocals and sampling.
the remixes featured on this record are done by two swinging tag-teams. first of all the well known krause duo (freude am tanzen / musik krause) with an edgy sharp jacking remix. on the b-side scott (the gym / my best friend / fluid ounce) turn the downbeat track precious fool with their jazzy twist into a dancefloor anthem. outstanding record!

the title track, lost in shibuya, is perhaps our favorite track from the album. its a very evocative track, a 7 minute journey that revolves around a killer bassline, that captures the trancey techno vibe that made some of the most glorious moments of nineties techno. on the flip side, we asked one of our favorite producers to deliver a remix. his name is quarion and as part of drumpoet community, he is responsible for some of the best deep house sounds of the past years, and is one of the leaders of the neo deep house movement. quarion blessed us with a tribute to mood ii swing that is his dub infected killer usuki shinrin mix.

the waiting is finally over! after all the ups and downs of the past year, we can happily report that joshua eustis now firmly intends to continue telefon tel aviv as a solo project. in order to mark his decision with a bang, thewonderful title track >immolate yourself< is being released as the second single from the current lp. the song has been entrusted to highly acclaimed and diverse remix artists who have skilfully stripped down the epic album track to more club-friendly formats.
the a side is delivered by label-mate thomas muller, whose finely detailed techno soundscapes can now be enjoyed on five bpc 12 inch releases. his >immolate< remix takes a much more direct approach. he reduces the lush arrangement of the original to a powerful basic framework, leaves out the vocals almost entirely, and creates a surprise when the track crumbles into sonic chaos towards the end.
miss fitz aka maayan nidam has had singles released on labels including raum musik and freak n chic, and these have been remixed by renowned artists such as ricardo villalobos. her version of >immolate< also makes a clear break from the album track and serves up her very own brand of abstract, dancefloor-friendly house. once again, all the opulence of the original is thrown overboard, a dry beat is placed at the centre of the arrangement and enriched with sinuous vocals.
ben klock needs no further introduction - he is the epitome of the bleak, hard minimal sound. his album >one< is currently available on ostgut ton, and as a remixer he has earned the highest acclaim for his version of depeche modes >peace<. bens >jack mix< is fittingly titled and lives up to all the expectations of the name. the track is stripped back to a resounding, hammer-like beat framework - minimised for maximum effect.
bpitch legend sascha funke delivers a surprise with another astoundingly reduced remix, at least by his standards. he turns away from the melodic richness of his current album >mango< in favour of repetitive fragments and an extended arc of tension which will surely make his >immolate< remix a massive after-hour hit.

part three of the cocoon 10inch series is all about the modern british techno scene, and the first hypnotic exclamation mark is set by yousef from liverpool. after collaborations with carl cox and x-press 2, >come home< - which can also be found on sven väths current ibiza review >the sound of the tenth season< - seems to become one of the most important tracks of the winter season 2009/2010: with a steadily rising crescendo, yousef is weaving around a >strings-meet-piano< motive with massive reverb that gives the tribal beats a deeper meaning and thus will be enchanting the clubs. the flip side belongs to london-based dj and producer tim green. he is releasing on labels such as four twenty, sci+tec and trapez for more than three years now and his co-production with emerson todd, >exercise<, even made it to cocoon compilation i. >lone time< lives on metal-like percussions that are loaded with adrenaline and once more prove the fact that modern techno cant go without tribal elements

daniel steinberg and front room are like annoyingly sexy couples that you end up in the next hotel room to on a company business trip. except of course daniel steinberg and front room dont actually have sex they just literally make sweet music together. the spiciness continues with the preacherman ep, daniel steinbergs fifth release on front room recordings. punctuated with the exotic and the kind of twists, bumps and energy that only steinberg can provide, preacherman kicks off a cacophony of funk fuelled head nodding to get any party pulsating. “you need love” with its in-your-face vocal, huge beat and sleazy decelerating breakdown has future classic written all over it. the long awaited tiefschwarz remix of “lucky sauce” also sees the light of day here in full effect and breathes a new layer of ‘wow’over a release that is only really just beginning to simmer down from its release in june. wonked out groover who stopped the music rounds proceedings off nicely on an ep that is audio proof that the stroke of his talent only gets more precise and dazzling with every release. daniel steinbergs releases are supported by the likes of ricardo villalobos, luciano, claude vonstroke and richie hawtin to name drop a few. watch this space for daniel steinbergs artist album coming out on front room in 2010

circus company welcomes a new artist on the label: the homewreckers. named after a track by southern soul legend sam dees, the production collective from germany has been moving and breaking new ground between detroit techno, abstract funk and melancholic disco music since 1995. their debut album amercian ruhr has been released on unique records in 2008 and creates an absolutely distinctive sound which seems to come straight out of a from a feverish dream populated by the ghostlike figures of larry graham, juan atkins, frank hutter, bernard edwards, erik b or al green. the not my business ep perfectly shows how the homewreckers flow on these two original tracks. you feel the funk, you feel detroit and you feel a deep and unique sense of music. cherry on the cake, you got a remix from san francisco based artist dave aju who is back on the label after his much acclaimed album open wide released in 2008. not my business isnt their first shoot on the label as they were already part of last months snuggle & slap circus company compilation with a brilliant live-version of chicago urban blues.

alejandro the argentinian fellow, also known for his monikas >funzion< and >e bridge<, released on lomidhigh, alphahouse and sushitech among others, presents us two energetic musical journeys for the meander imprint. this is warm and funky music, simply pure and rich in its dynamic, drive and groove. stunning and very ajejandros own style. the track selva introduces itsself with a temper didgeridoo eclecticism. followed by lush heavy sub basses with a dash of acid and wandering crispy sounds, his tricky rhythm programmings are blowing us away into dramatic dancefloorbliss. spiced up toms between high frequent synthesizers underline its constant presence. a melodic, organic and crafty piece of house music. on the flipside we have >pampa<. the obviously traditional south american influences of our talent merge with modernism, fluxion and frequency precision. an emotional trip that let somehow emerge images of dreamy landscapes while being still a dance orientated killer tune. with this record alejandro emphasizes his creativity as a standout producer for dense and powerfull creations
