10 years redshape live is a special thank you to the labels i mainly worked with in the past ten years and also to all the people on worlds dance floors, which gave me so many stellar moments. starting on running back, the best of live series will contain tracks which were only part of my live set: previously unavailable and not even arranged as full tracks. as i always record my shows, i searched for the moment, in which each of those tracks had their biggest and also earliest impact. i took that recording and rebuild them part by part to make them proper dj versions without loosing their live roots. named after the cities where they were performed. av aviv and rome.

the inimitable ld nero with his first outing for running back. best-known for his merits on trelik and a poetic sound which is distinctively his own, ld nero immerses himself in a rare breed of deep house music that isn’t classicist, yet dateless, emotional but not kitschy, and most of all meditative without drowsiness. devoid of any second thoughts, these are three tracks made for those wee hours in the morning that may never end.

janette jnett pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of melbourne, where she’s been djing for well over two decades. here, she delivers her debut solo ep, featuring a quartet of tracks co-produced by maurice fulton. the latter also delivers a solo mix of opener reflection, which adds a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. theres a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of swangzipani. elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills bubbles away is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while judge not wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

two years ago i played at studio 9 in vilnius, lithuania. the following day i missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend linus, who took me to the contemporary art centre. it was there i spotted a book named ‘rojus’, that linus told me translated as ‘paradise’. the word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. a few days after returning home, i turned on to a national geographic documentary named ‘designed to dance’, explaining the courtship rituals of birds of paradise. as i watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birds’ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. this gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these birds of paradise and their habitat. thus, rojus. leon vynehall 2016

in a time before cdj loop buttons and stone-cold arrangement techniques, bonus beats and beat records were a vital tool for aspiring, working and tone-deaf djs. the third release in an unofficial beat-tracks sublabel (se redshape and todd osborn for further reference) rhythm trainx vol 1 tries to breathe new life into that lost craft with an all-star cast: manuel tur, i:cube, blank spanner, disco nihilist, Âme and radio slave. all in different bpm, varying styles and (un)fortunately a bit more than simple kick-drum-hi-hat patterns. built to last.

the music strahil velchev alias kink creates for the 12-inch format is as playful and fanciful as it is functional and precise. his first outing for running back is no exception. inspired by the hardware of the same name, his cloud generator ep makes the most use of that. computer nerd symphonies and cyberpunk melodies for clubs, roofless raves and virtual racing games. wilhelm reich and william gibson would enjoy this. oh, and there is a breakbeat mix on here as well.

the man like octo octa: best known for his still devastating let me see you cut for 100% silk, the brooklyn producer graces running back with four fine cuts. creating the new, while respecting the old, the more times ep features heavy house (more times), twitchy house (fever dream), dubby house (take me to the dark) and breakbeat house with due respect to ltj bukem (dresses). thats a lot of house for your money. music for clubs and places that would like to be clubs. watch out for octo octa on the back of the brilliant cover.
