first official reissue of the extremely rare full-length album by lagos-based bandleader shina williams. clean copies of the original currently sell for up to £500. the record was born in 1979 when shina put biddy wright, fred fisher, saliu alabi, prince bola, tutu shoronmu, tunde willimas and several other decorated nigerian musicians – who played with the likes of fela kuti, sjob movement, sonny okoson, king bucknor amongst others – together to record. the result is ‘african dances’, a timeless fusion of afrobeat, electronics, boogie and disco. includes his most well-known song, ‘agboju logun’ that williams knew was ground breaking – “i want to show the whole wide world that africa is alive with modern musicians to reckon with anywhere,”. this album version is a different mix to the two-track 12” that came out under on earthworks, rough trade in 1984. official mr bongo reissue. replica original artwork. licensed direct from shina williams.

first time reissue of the very first dub lp released in nyc, 1975! part of the genesis of the jah life label! first time reissue of kaya dub from 1975, noted as the first ever proper dub lp pressed and released in new york city. the eponymous lp is among the first set of releases on the kaya label. this imprint was the first to showcase the partnership of percy chin and hyman jah life wright as producers and cornerstones of the burgeoning nyc reggae scene of the day. though these tracks originate from jamaica thru a connection with pat jah lloyd francis and have also been released elsewhere, this is none the less a killer selection of dubs from tubby s and randys. in sound and visuals, kaya dub serves as a fantastic snapshot of the music and vibes of roots reggae in the mid 70s, among the best dub lp s of its time.

the story of the great roots reggae harmony trio black uhuru is one defined by many unexpected twists and turns. in its best known form, led by michael rose and with founding member duckie simpson and the black american female vocalist, puma jones, the group would enjoy the greatest popularity of any act in the wake of bob marley’s untimely death in 1981, but the origins of the group lay in the turbulent waterhouse district during the mid-1970s. duckie first formed the group as uhuru, the swahili word for unity, with garth dennis as lead singer and don carlos to join him in harmony, after cutting an adaptation of the impressions’ “romancing to the folk song” at dynamics, “time is on our side” at randy’s for clive chin, and “slow coach” for raymond “benno” anderson, dennis drifted into the wailing souls and don carlos went solo, leading duckie to recruit rising waterhouse vocalist michael “tony” rose as lead singer, and errol nelson from the jays for harmony. their debut album, love crisis, was produced, voiced and mixed at king tubby’s studio by prince jammy and remains and outstanding example of jammy’s roots reggae production phase. the song “hard ground” vamps on a similar theme to marley’s “talking blues”: rose sings of a life of everyday hardship, with destitution and homelessness the pervading factors. on the extended dub portion and dub the instrumental cuts that follow the alternate vocal take of this enthralling 12-inch ep, you can hear the non-standard instrumentation that helps make the work so innovative, with winston wright’s harpsichord melody emphasising the hopelessness of rose’s emotive lyrics, the commanding rhythm and understated bass and guitar from robbie shakespeare and chinna smith completing the picture.

vocalist and mult- instrumentalist family thebroomfield s might be new to you but deepfunk heads know the deal. the six broomfield siblings (vocalist, diane and her 5 brothers) released some of the best rare groove 12s and 45s in the 1980s (although this 45 was recorded in 1979) as well as recording with betty wright, kc and the sunshine band, timmy thomas, little beaver, julio iglesias, michael sterling and many, many more. championed by keb darge and others on the deepfunk scene in the early 2000s, this record has remained agonisingly elusive, despite being very popular as both sides are brilliant. so, with the help of symphonical records we got in touch with aaron and made this happen, look out for aaron s 45 dropping soon as well.

dba s house leaning dubs series returns this time fronted by kemback and accompanied by dj bone remix under his differ-ent pseudonym. better known as kemback, geoff wright is a bristol-based producer, selector, violinist, teacher, and sound. his debut release on bristol mainstay futureboogie received widespread support from uk tastemakers including skream, mosca, and bonobo. he has also recorded on alfresco disco and omena records.

picking up right where ep 1 left off, ep 2 kicks things off with a bang. first up is catz n dogz and yotam avnis for blakkat a high pace burner ideally suited for dance floors from panorama bar to under the leds of watergate and every club in-between. the duo return with the bright version of afterglow for the second cut on ep 2 and aptly titled, it pushes an intense, glitter filled ride to its limits. embarking onto the b-side, o.a. peas from heavy hitter eats everything & lord leopard take a trip down memory lane with a heavily sample based feel good tune that will absolutely demolish dance floors worldwide. rounding out the ep is a final collaboration between catz n dogz and reno wurzbacher with ma people and its by far the smoothest and most laid back tune of the bundle, but never does it let you rest as a mesmerizing groove and lush atmospherics tell a deep, complex tale of late nights and early mornings.

!! 2018 repress !! flying high after their successful watergate 22 compilation, catz n dogz return to deliver eight exclusive tracks from their mix via two eps showcasing their expert ability to navigate a multitude of different styles. ep 1 commences with catz n dogz original fire burning when we are, a tune that sees them flying solo to create a stunning journey that lands somewhere sonically between carl craig and henrik schwarz where infectious drums reinforce an ensemble of dramatic harmonies tangling with euphoric melodies. afterglow follows suit with an attitude infused vocal from shaun j. wright laid over a trek into a world where old school vibes meet a new school plan of attack resulting in an absolute floor filler perfect for any time. rounding out the ep are remixes from two of the best: prosumer and sebo k. prosumer steps up first to rework fire burning when we ar’ and creates a massive tune with the signature prosumer touch, evident in the timelessness and maturity of the reimagining. sebo k in turn hands over a jackin remake of afterglow by staying true to the original by keeping everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

they are dangerous is the second song released by senator gary. the riddim was build by the late great keyboard player winston wright (1944-1993) and the vocal was recorded at creative sound studio. the tune was produced by neville reid who died a few years ago. senator gary is also called imara, abbasani and now he is voicing under the name of i-maa-raa. so the quest to find him was not so easy, thanks to marshall neeko for the help.

a pivotal moment in 20th century politics, history and culture the november 22nd 1963 assassination of president john f. kennedy (in dallas, texas) produced a mountainous range of forgotten, discarded and ghostly vinyl artifacts. country songs, private-press lamentations, mournful poetry and violent political diatribes were rushed onto rough-hewn 45s and marginal lps that vied to be heard above the noise and confusion.

having previously worked with zero 7 and nightmares on wax before embarking on a solo career a few years back, mozez (aka soul singer/songwriter osmond wright) is no newcomer. the ray mang-produced run river first appeared on last year s wings full-length, and here makes it to wax for the first time. sitting somewhere between early freeez and odyssey, mang s extended vocal version is something of a soulful, soft-spun disco-funk treat. as we ve come to expect from mang, its musically rich and impeccably played, with the live instrumentation providing a deliciously organic feel. this can be heard more clearly on the excellent flipside instrumental.

recently appearing on the mighty crosstown rebels with a remix of shaun j. wright & alinka ‘face the truth’, sought after duo audiojack are back serving up a solid two-track release in the form of ‘turya’. turya is built for serious heads down sessions fusing subtle acid pads with soaring synths and sonorous spoken words. the hypnotic quality of the teacher’s words beguiles and entrances the dance floor, allowing people to lose themselves in them and its evolving groove. ‘event horizon’ is a different beast altogether, with a heavy drum and bass vibe, a four-four format, and a classic -amen- break beat style. in 2015 audiojack launched their sunday social free party at veto club in their home of ibiza, which after a strong season will continue this year. their first essential mix recently dropped on radio 1 and a string of highly successful releases and remixes on labels such as hot creations, tsuba, 20/20 vision and their own gruuv has solidified their place in the dance music elite. it’s safe to say that 2016 is proving to be a big year for the talented duo.
