the mar-keys is the first house band from the label stax records. during the 60’s they recorded many songs and with their first single “last night” they made it to the top of the us charts. years after this massive success they released the album “the great memphis sound”, with the support of artists like isaac hayes and booker t. jones. guitarist steve cropper shows his skills in the jazz and soul sound from the music on the album. the instrumental tracks including song classics like “the girl from ipanema”, “in the mood” and “philly dog”.
the group started in the late 50’s as the royal spades and became known as the band where a lot of musical talents marked their first step in the industry. as a backing band they worked together with artists like otis redding, wilson pickett and carla thomas.

since his appearance on soccer96s jupiter masterdrive edits ep (alongside danny krivit and glenn astro flips, also on wotnot ) in 2015, and subsequent eps on wotnot, monologues and sgol, danvers has swiftly become a name to pay attention to. as a regular appearance on co-ops selectors assemble, both live and on their recent comp vol. 2, he s established himself as a new and original voice on the broken beat scene. his recent the future is broken mix series highlights his ear for unconventional dance music, something that makes him extremely at home on the wildly creative wotnot (thanks dj mag). the opening two tracks are strongly in the broken beat vein. mason opens with dreamy, rhodes jazz over a bruk beat with rolling snare fills, lulling us into a false sense of security before switching to an offbeat but irresistible squelchy synth groove. similarly, in aye ata the pulsing chord that slowly grows out of the beat suddenly turns the track around with a rhythmic twist, showing the playful broken beat in a whole new light. there s a house touch throughout the ep, none more so than in 1997, where a bouncing kick, soulful claps and a booming sub provide a steadier basis for laid back rhodes chords and dreamy spoken word samples. as a big influence on danvers music, frits wentink is welcomed onto remix duty with open arms. the wolf music regular brings an otherworldly vibe to his take on 1997 , with enchanting but almost disorienting chord swells and spiralling vocal fx punctuated with crisp snare rolls. the ever-busy danvers recently launched 38 east , a studio space and music community, with warren xlnce . warren s remix of 1997 was a surprise gift to his business partner and collaborator, and is a deeper house cut, joe armon jones (brownswood) rhodes jam over the track bringing a distinct peckham flavour. dj support from ig culture, andwot (touching bass), neue grafik & evm128 (co-op) t williams

last years on the corner underground smash release, the 12inch ep santuris embaire umeme, introduced uganda’s mugwisa international xylophone group (m.i.x.g) to the world. the recordings center on the embaire, a giant xylophone native to ugandan folk music, which is dug into a pit for a natural, earthy bass resonance as gargantuous as the instrument itself. the instrument performs a key role in village life, with ceremonial playing sessions lasting for hours on end. these recordings may be esoteric in nature but they add important context to the santuri’s embaire umeme 12inch and are a vital documentation of the iganga village’s culture, as well as that of uganda. jones has artfully chopped the epic session into a series of short evocative chapters to create a pioneering masterpiece. remix duties are led by griot house innovators, the diabolcal liberties, who have raved-up some sun ra frequencies for the cosmic junglist crew. last but never least, victoria topping has created beautiful artwork using the session photography taken by jones during the recordings

live saxophone provided courtesy of caspar sutton-jones kicks off the a side taking us on a boogie expedition channeling the early 90s french filter house boom. the contrasting b side builds soothingly to that e-come up moment with some fat 2nd-gen detroit bass vibes to pull us out again.
two jovonn remixes finish the record as the legendary nyc producer dishes out two takes on the a side, revival. the a2 provides us a dance floor thumper stacked with jovonn’s signature deepness and 2-step shuffles whilst the b2 treats us with the perfect tool to build up to another drop frenzy in the dance.

wer über jahrzehnte hinweg tolle musik hören wollte, musste nur einen blick auf den bildschirm werfen. tv- und film-soundtracks waren oft die arbeit von us-legenden wie lalo schiffrin, oliver nelson & quincy jones und ihrer britischen kollegen ronnie hazelhurst und alan hawkshaw. sie alle schufen den soundtrack der 60er und 70er jahre zu einer zeit, als film und tv-musik unverschämt funky waren. hier knüpft auch andy tolman und sein musikalisches cartel an, von jazz zu soul und funk bietet cyphe- den soundtrack zu einem imaginären film.

after the success of burnski s debut album dna, now come the remixes from mandar, diego krause and laura jones.

seattle artist, and from 0-1 co-owner sone, issues his debut vinyl ep, auroras. aptly titled, this ep embodies the characteristic ethereal nature of these light formations seen in the far northern and southern hemispheres. deep heady atmospheres, and constant driving rhythmic motion perfectly embody the artists vision. australis opens the ep with hypnotic rhythms and enigmatic textures. milkplant continues the theme while ratcheting up the energy level, and injecting a touch of grit. borealis brings the funk with undeniable groove and tracky percussive power serving as a great dj tool. uk artist operator (aka rich jones) turns the focus with heavy driving force, and an organic, acidic chug.
