carl craig needs no introduction, he has been at the forefront of the international techno scene for over 20 years and has amassed a truly enviable back catalog of releases utilizing various pseudonyms and collaborating with many different artists during his stellar career. one of the detroit natives most enduring and popular guises has been his paperclip people project which has been active since 1991. country boy goes dub was originally released in 1996 on the seminal paperclip people long-player the secret tapes of dr.eich. its blend of samples, metallic drum machines, 808s, guitar loops and serious dubwise tendencies made it stand out instantly. as with a lot of craigs legendary productions it had that otherworldly swing, an incessant groove and a melding of various styles, sounds and influences informing its spirit.

off the back of the success of audens first hotflush ep, the enigmatic alias returns to scubas label with another hard hitting four-tracker, wall to wall. lock in throws you in headfirst - fast-paced drum loops layered with slices of jarring techno and a driving bassline that would be welcomed on the darkest dancefloors. utopian, initially a more languid cut, juxtaposes an almost cerebral landscape with hard hitting percussion, only allowing the listener a short breather before hurtling back in with perisheds swirling synths and trippy electronic jabs. ending on xirox, auden crafts a slightly more down-tempo cut, boasting a catchy groove that only gets better with each listen. whoever auden may or may not be, one thing is for certain – hes carving his place deep in technos panorama.

the cat is out of the bag as two greg wilson summer festival exclusives are unleashed on the expertly curated and highly collectable a&r edits dj imprint. its label favourite peza who is back at the editing block for this release, reworking walking in rhythm, the 1975 classic from the blackbyrds, into a contemporary dancefloor scorcher. its instant familiarity is swelled by peza s additional drums and percussion - his complementary instrumentation, played live over the original groove, updating this feel-good sensation. pure morning was pezas favourite placebo track and so the required amount of reverence was paid when he sharpened the razor to bring it right up to date for 2014, and provide greg with the opening track of his glastonbury trilogy this year. a full, percussive rework accentuates its anthemic reach and a well measured dose of filters and effects nudge this new arrangement to completion.

for the latest edition of the intriguing dessert islands discs re-edit series, the label has called upon the well-renowned scalpel talents of german-in-amsterdam marcel vogel, aka em vee. the double denim-sporting eccentric drops another gem in the shape of *white heat shake it out (edit)*, a bouncy and seductive disco chop-job that makes great use of the source materials bustling groove and steamy, spoken word vocals. on the flip, lesser-known re-edit heads papi del pancake and claude von reefer take up the challenge. their *gimme what you got* has a little more deep house shuffle, but retains the key instrumentation and feel of a sumptuous disco-soul jam.

with the bizarre feeling ep laying the sound for the subsequent fist year of the label, it is right jamie returns with ep#2 to move things forward with another twisted take on his unique mutoid-protoid-machine-funk-groove. starting with mad obsession you would be forgiven for thinking you ll have bizarre feeling part 2, with warped vocals - taken from late night, half asleep scribbled notes - and space echo haze, but let the percussion work-out trip you up and the stars in and before you know it things start going leftfild and then deeper with the free party sound system bass line shuffl of time nearly time. what he is on (about), no one knows. it is on the flp however that things take a darker turn. beyond the confession booth, down sharp stairs and dripping ceiling to a red light lit room of latter day late night blues.

the occasional (but always excellent) street edits series returns, this time with a trio of high-grade scalpel works from chicago re-edit hero rahaan. as usual, the source material is dusty and obscure, and the reworks revelatory. -city of disco- is in many ways typical of rahaan s work, with carefully cuts and loops being used to create a thumping, house style groove (admittedly one that pays due reverence to the source material). there s more of a celebratory, soulful feel about the impeccable -strung out-, which turns a little-known disco-soul gem into a huggable dancefloor classic. best of all, though, is -brighten you up-, which sits somewhere between later electrofunk and early house, a proto-proto gem, perhaps. either way, it s a killer.

after an a-side debut on m_red ltd’s heady 10’’ series, shadowy outfit overall severity return with their first full outing for key vinyl. much like the slabs of steely sonic wares that have paved the way before it, “knowing the healing” presents three works of on-point dance floor material we’ve come to associate with the underground tastemaker. “explain pain” is the ep’s aggravated opener. a pounding kick and itchy percussion unfurls into a din of claps and noises, spliced with melodious peals and a low-slung sort of groove. “backfiring nerves” is one of those cool peak-time weapons: frantic yet subtle, deeply groovy and plied with much-loved vintage crashes. “parasympathetic” then concludes in the form of a chugging basement bomb awash with bleary acid tones, crystal hats and muted dissonant chimes. all in all, “knowing the healing” marks a powerful entry into the ring from these ones-to-watch newcomers.

for the second release of s3a records, s3a chose the most talented parisian new blooded artist nowadays: neue grafik ! he has jazz, funk and hiphop roots and his house music sweats all of these influences. this ep goes from “great sample based house musi”c to “saxophone played bridges” passing by delicious piano interludes witch can demonstrate all breadth of his talent. a release made to last for years with a classy delightful efficiency.

those who have been following the cosmology series from its inception will no doubt be familiar with the ad hoc release schedule and will perhaps have grown accustomed to the diverse range of styles that their eps encompass. each one has trodden a different path in the pursuit of updating pivotal dancefloor memories and cosmology volume four is the most ambitious reworking to date. the choice for this instalments source material is a topical one as the influence here comes from herman sonny blount, better known as the free jazz pioneer sun ra.

kaiser is a bari-based producer and dj. he began his collaboration with etruria beat in 2013 with the track conversation, part of the va named bud sampler (part 1), many times played by richie hawtin. today he presents his first ep for etruria, entitled medusa.the pack consists of two original tracks save the chord, so entitled because of the presence of some overlapping dub-chords which intersect one each other and create a melody on which grows a well balanced groove and medusa taking its name by the ep, is a techno track with an aggressive and imposing rhythm, perfect for the most powerful dancefloors!

op.discs highly acclaimed 2013 double pack from radiq aka yoshihiro hanno receives some heavy reworking from three of his label mates, fumiya tanaka, akiko kiyama and aoki takamasa. fumiya tanakas reinterpretation provides an extensive, deep down edition of vida noir and renders the original beats into a minimal bass behemoth of a track that clocks in at almost ten minutes. akiko kiyama shows her peerless talent in her revision of rondo. the beats and pieces are sticking like glue each other to render exotic and mesmerizing aspect of radiqs original. aoki takamasa shows his further involvement into minimalism on his version of calling, channels a micro-house groove into a multilayered beast.

music that keeps your body busy on the dance floor while it takes your mind to exotic places far away: timboletti creates a tense atmosphere between the stripped-down power of a kickdrum and the intricate network of sounds and melodies. during the titles murrakus and wüstenlauf your inner cinema will show mysterious scenes from an oriental bazaar, at the same time your body will have to deal with a pleasant feeling of restlessness. the frequency spectrum of makrovic is invaded by tripped-out samples, reminiscent of radio transmissions from some odd parallel dimension, resulting in a groove that is deep yet uplifting. barfussbravo sounds just as alien and is just as compelling, as delirious melodies and delay cascades unfold upon tight, driving rhythm sections. mollono.bass delivers a remix that is probably even deeper, a stardust phantasy flying high upon the solid foundation of a standing bass line. in contrast, carlos shifts down a gear and reflects on the multi-dimensional anatomy of barfussbravo during a smooth downbeat version.

anything eddie ruscha touches is generally worth checking, and this latest outing for lectric sands offshoot it’s a lectric world is no exception. ruscha kicks things off with the electric dub, an untypically funky fusion of his usual vivid psychedelics, exotic vocal samples, crunchy guitars and an undulating disco-rock groove. the original rub - all bubbling electronics, muted guitar licks and deep house warmth - adds a little balearic disco flavour, before ruscha returns to more familiar territory with the delay-laden and pleasingly out-there lectric dub. finally, he reaches for the marimbas on the pleasing dub, an afro-influenced blast of wide-eyed balearic sunshine complete with lilting pedal steel.

known as pantaleon perez prado, was the younger brother of the famous king of mambo. pantaleon, who came to europe in the 1950s, recorded several albums with unifunk. a powerful big funk band sound featuring: tullio de piscopo, mario rusca, giancarlo barigozzi, pino prestipino and others. escandalo!, as perez prado states in the brief sleeve note, is named after a new rhythm created by himself. *a rhythm you can dance to in freedom, without specific steps*. in spite of this naive launching, the opening track chicago banana is a declaration of intent, with its sly stone-esque groove. 9 out of 12 tracks are originals credited to composers of the unifunk circle, but the track list is careful to preserve prados well-established latin appeal, by including three standards such as brazil, el manisero and tequila.

as 2014 comes to an end, the london based duo is closing the year with yet another split ep. on the a-side we have vimmes, a low-slung groove with percussive textures that expand gradually and steadily, evolving along shadowy soundscapes and intricate rhythms. its a fine example of holdie gawns personal style, stripped back grooves moving along melodic tones and sound design. micawber on the other side offers a shuffled up house track under the name de jure. syncopated synth lines, lush pads and melodic textures make this an warm, lush early morning electronic affair.

london label eartoground s final release of 2014 raw material sees another new act joining the label as they welcome on board dualit . this german duo are otherwise known as oliver rosemann from leipzig and mascon from frelberg. recently they have released on such prolific labels as clr, earwiggle and fifth wall records. this release features six tracks, being four originals backed by two centralised locked grooves with full front and back artwork on the sleeve. audio selected for this release gives a good over all presentation of dualit s varied, deep and raw dynamic range of techno.

the original track from kaelan wheels around the main chord: soiled and biting in the proper basic channel/chain reaction way. the track is built on a chasing 130bpm groove. the stojche s remix refers to afterhour atmospheres. a sinuous deep dub. lee holman provides us of a dancefloor killer remix. prickly. rabid. techno the babe roots remix take a break from the dancefloor and it refers to a dub techno reggae oriented. the spacey pads take us in the journey.

after his highly acclaimed sunset in kreuzberg ep, dib001 shifts gears and goes straight into techno mode: constantine is a steady number, its acid bass line slugging around a dark lfo pulse and punching snares. piano chords slow down the pace here and there, adding a dreamy touch to the mood. on remix duties, idriss drafts in gaetano parisio, the godfather of the italian techno scene: his track has a more percussive feel, with a classy swinging rhythm that takes over the original groove.

-the reason- starts the party working his trademark house groove with a fat bassline and suggestive speech vocals. synth stabs and strings complete all the elements for a crowd favourite, as always the breakdown drives intensity up a notch too. this gem c

roots for bloom label boss jamie trench kicks off the label offshoot rfbcolours with a collaboration ep alongside rebel. the a side tracks come from jamie himself. -good love- has a stripped back garage feel with a jacking and filtered vocal carrying it, then stapled brings things across with a more techno feel with strong stabs and background drifting chords. the b side is where we see rebel s input, with the rolling and infectious in the end . the groove is again stripped back and simple but it s this that carries the vocal that demands your attention. the two then pair up for we don t fly first class and it s apparent to hear in the track where the two come together well. this one is driven by a huge sub bass line and simple stabs and talking and seductive vocal lines.

top tier hawaiian disco boogie masterpiece available for the first time on 45. it took us 3 years to persuade nohelani cypriano to let us do *lihue* , a brilliant fairly obscure disco boogie track but if you are a fan and you keep trying your enthusiasm for the music pays off. not only are we are just delighted to present *lihue* on 7 for the first time (previously lp only) but to top it off the flip is a track from a very rare hawaiian 45 also by nohelani called *playing with fire*, which sounds like a party track straight out your favorite 80s film. i rate it, which means it is good! its like rare-groove scene all over again but with new records.

it has been local talk bosses mad mats & toolis secret weapon during their dj sets over the past months and have destroyed clubs from london to berlin. with a super catchy chord theme, bumpy 4/4 beats and a slight uk feel this is as bad as it gets. it is just one of those tunes you immediately recognise and can relate with. together with a deep journey house remix from ad bourke and a fierce uk inspired bass/house mix from colognes hade we dare to say that this is one the finest releases on local talk so far. original bristol cat crackazat (now residing in uppsala, sweden) got a sound that fuses jazz theories, electronic 4/4s with a deep uk underground mentality. think underground resistance meets floating points and your almost there. somewhere else is the second single from crackazat on local talk and in early 2015 he will drop his debut album crescendo on local talk.
