embezzlement society takes us back to the early days of 80s hip-hop with his ‘rough quarters ep. on his record the man from belfast heavily relies on funk-based drum loops as were popular in the glorious days of old school hip-hop. the results are two super casual tracks with a cool hip-house attitude just perfect for hip-house lover drei farben house who took the chance to contribute a remix in his slick and smooth style, merging the raw drums with some tender rhodes. tenderpark regular roman rauch finishes off the ep and slows down the tempo in his remix concentrating on the originals of the samples and displaying his mastery with the mpc once more. as always all tracks have been mastered and cut by helmut erler at dubplates & mastering.

acid, no wave and experimental house producer drvg cvltvre has been busy recently. after releasing with chris moss acid on shipwrec in 2014, vincent koreman then served up a full ep of his own, on dutch label cos_mos and is now back once again with a new four track affair on pinkman that comes two years after he offered up the label’s first ep in 2013. up first, * my houz* is a swampy house track with heavy drums, whirring machines and white noise textures all adding up to an intense affair that sounds like little else. then comes * tyranny of the gods* , a slow tempo but high impact track that builds and builds on a nerve lead synth line as frazzled bass props things up from below. dark and weird, occult and rave, its another unique proposition. on the flip, * sleepdealer* is an unbalanced house track with taught, tight bass and is shot through with laser like synths. serene and spaced out, it makes way for closer * crack spirit guide* which is a noisy, intense and brooding fusion of crisp percussion, big walls of synth and chattering drums that really have you on edge. once agin, then, drvg cvltvre has come up with the idiosyncratic goods.

british powerhouse alan fitzpatrick returns to figure with his second ep on the label after 2009 s weed killer / science . since then its clear that alan has continued on a dedicated, valiant quest to find his own sound, and the results are on show here, with a heavyweight, emotive and futuristic techno three-tracker. like a warm rush of endorphins on the summer breeze, alan s rich up-building sound is perfectly represented in tracks like a subtle change , with its jubilant stab-led melody, or the modern club-weapon vibes of trigger finger . harking back to late 90s uk idm and proper dub-techno atmospheres, fitzpatrick then gracefully crafts a down-tempo, space-out version of a subtle change for the b-side, providing the afterhours sessioners with a new buzz-track.

now living in warsaw, donnell knox was well known, along with black nation s jay denham for forging a tough, distinct kalamazoo techno sound in the 90s. his label, sonic mind, put out some very coveted, underground wax that still sounds unique, extra rugged, and fresh. well d-knox is now on a bit of a comeback mission it seems, with some really inspiring new material, and “africa calling”. the first version, created to donnell’s much loved “spirit man” alias, is a soulful trek through layers of pads and emotive synth work. the simple, but uplifting, vocal snippet really gives it an organic and spiritual feel, the tempo is driving and quick, but the overall vibe is laid back and deep. remixes come from the likes of brooklyn based titonton duvante, who maximizes a synth pattern to a form a beautiful, reaching, version, while canada’a rennie foster channels his futago traxx style to present a full on tribal, drum based mix with added vocal pieces. also, detroit transplant, now living in canada as well, j garrett goes in with a very emotional, warm, string laden take. the ep is capped off with another version from donnell that could stand as it’s own track really, a totally different, but equally as strong, version featuring a driving baseline and detroit style string vamps. a really nice release, worthy of your support, from a well loved veteran of the techno underground.

the fx mchn has unplugged itself from the london housing trust offices just long enough to run off these three documents for narrow gauge. art 2 mouse starts with a gritty, little drum box punching way above its weight before the heavy machinery rolls in for reinforcement. mono life slows the tempo with a close-up shot of the intricate interlocking cogs of an fx mchn track. on the flip side we move to a wider-screen format for a helicopter ride over the oil-drum beats and tribal chants of no place to go .

classic arthur russell 7 inch from the depths of west ends vaults. timely remastered from the original tapes. this is a different version to the honest jons 12 inch released in 2003 with more moog bleeps and a slower tempo and has never been commercially available on vinyl (track run time 2:45). it also includes the uptempo freakout rare as hens teeth instrumental mix. original 7 inches going for up to £200 on discogs and only 12 people in the world showing they own a copy. this release never got passed promo stage at west end in 1980.

this four track ep kicks off with cladistic mutation , a sparse underwater soundtrack with only the gentlest suggestion of rhythm, lots of reverb and tiny little details that float by like micro-bacterial debris. m2 is a more beat driven dub track but is still way below the surface: the kicks are smooth and hunched over, the chords are smeared out in all directions and the atmosphere is lo-fi and grainy. on the flip, grain gets even more energetic, with firm techno kick drums setting a stern tempo as all sorts of aqueous details and spacious effec ts peppe r the groove. there s a heavenly nature to the pads and an industrial texture to the percussion that makes this a cerebral but physical affair from start to finish. lastly, neurowaves closes things down in blissfully dubbed out and horizontal fashion, with large sweeping pads, tweaked filters and evocative little details all placing you firmly under water.

the lobster theremin white label debuts yet another young producer in the shape of the leeds-based hedge maze. with a tightly crafted, hazy, blissed-out house sound these three tracks have been culled from the muggy undergrowth of his northern harddrive. untitled is a chattering roller, smothered with a throbbing, wavy bassline and ending in a fuzzy, chord-soaked crescendo, while the slow, drudging rhythms of dysania give a heavy nod to some of lowtec s down tempo numbers for the label. the release is rounded out with the glistening, black-sun shower of (slow). all delay-drenched crystal stabs and oscillating soundscapes. a floating, ethereal trip into the afterlife.

as big fans of red axes, were happy to welcome niv and dori to the label. their first release for hivern is pil sagol, a three-track ep that features some of their most adventurous material to date. the title track is a slice of shamanic house full of playful melodies, dripping textures and steady rhythms that result in the sonic equivalent of psychotropic trip through the jungle. me and abra in ruanda drops the tempo but keeps the mind-expanding effect with its mangled brass sounds and ceremonious pads. todum todum is the most dance floor-driven cut of the ep, building tension through distorted toms, reverberant claps and an unrelenting bass line whilst keeping the narcotic vibe of the whole release through highly enchanting cosmic melodies. the 12inch comes in a captivating sleeve by barcelona-based designer xavier marin.

the globally trendsetting house and techno family that is visionquest now turns to a new pairing of sonny fodera & gene farris for their debut ep on the label. entitled ‘we work it’, the two-track affair comes with a remix by visionquest man lee curtiss. australian sonny fodera has been at the sharp end of the dance music scene for years now, clocking up huge hits both solo and with green velvet aka cajmere, releasing albums such as afterparties & aeroplanes and appearing on cajual, defected, suara and many more top labels. gene farris, of course, is a chicago house legend who has been active since the nineties, runs his own farris wheel label and has released close to one hundred definitive eps on relief, soma and many others. up first, ‘we work it’ is a lithe ritual of house funk with bent synths and slick mid tempo drums. a spoken word vocal snippet muses on the intake of various substances and the drums roll on infectiously below. it’s sure to be a standout anthem in the months to come given that vocal line and the spiritualness of the keys all around only adds to the effect. the first remix comes from lee curtiss. this one is a much quicker and more peak time bit of tech house with textured, dynamic bass and plenty of drum fills. it’s an involved, more cosmic and tense take on the original, that will build great pressure on the dance floor. all in all this is another on point package from visionquest that will get played far and wide

recent output has seen dorisburg pushing into deeper realms. computer drumming are some further steps in these explorations of 4/4 rhythms and acoustic depth. with a wide range in tempo, the track titles offers aid for the venturous. a1 is a reduced jam of echoing percussion that never sees the entry of a kick drum. a2 compensates with bouncing bass and a playful array of drumming elements entering and dropping off in a bold tempo. exiting on a more well established pulse, the b side consists of the deepest and most mysterious offering from dorisburg to date. distant bells and chimes and a grand formation of percussion meets thundering bass in an encounter set on vast grounds.

daniel savio - the swede who coined the term “skwee” back in 2006 when the first odd-sounding electro-funked and tempo-twirling 7inches came about from finland and sweden. his 6-track record for laton consists of true-to-the-game skwee sounds and rhythms incl. oriental-like melodies that has been penetrating the genre for years. harmonic in melody, diverse in tempo from the originator. laton presents some of the proprietors of skwee & the phenomenon of this fennoscandian sound with three different 12inches and a lp compilation. “holtiton” was originally released in 2012, limited and is back on demand.

with a career spanning over twenty-five years and releases across strictly rhythm, kingstreet records and real tone to name a few, tommy bones’ new ‘black concept’ ep brings two tracks that give a modern edge to the classic soulful house sound. ‘black concept’ has a soothing, almost serene sound with the use of jazz influenced instrumental sample but also a beat that allows it to remain predominantly house track. ‘put it on you’ is up-tempo with more of a club designed sound, the vocal of lydia rhodes has an almost seductive sound and the varied tempo gives a sound for the underground dancefloor.

this four track ep kicks off with cladistic mutation , a sparse underwater soundtrack with only the gentlest suggestion of rhythm, lots of reverb and tiny little details that float by like micro-bacterial debris. m2 is a more beat driven dub track but is still way below the surface: the kicks are smooth and hunched over, the chords are smeared out in all directions and the atmosphere is lo-fi and grainy. on the flip, grain gets even more energetic, with firm techno kick drums setting a stern tempo as all sorts of aqueous details and spacious effec ts peppe r the groove. there s a heavenly nature to the pads and an industrial texture to the percussion that makes this a cerebral but physical affair from start to finish. lastly, neurowaves closes things down in blissfully dubbed out and horizontal fashion, with large sweeping pads, tweaked filters and evocative little details all placing you firmly under water.
