in 1982, a group of friends deep into post-punk, jazz and dub got together in mad professors studio and lay down their youthful interpretation of a nyc disco cut. their unique take included trombone, vibraphone, piano, and an ital dose of tape delay. they called the song trouble and released two versions (vocal and dub) on their friend tony mcdermott s !drum! label with artwork inspired by russian constructivism. tip! . the group, comprised of justin langlands, chrysta jones, john schofield, tom dixon, and dave killen, decided to call themselves a-team, having no idea that mr.t and co. would make them almost totally ungoogle-able 30 years later. the result of their adolescent studio idealism sounds akin to otherdisco misfits like arthur russell, maximum joy, talking drums and wouldn t sound out of place on legendary nyc label 99 records. remastered with an extended club dub formaximum dance-floor action.

after previously releasing starship commander woooo woooos mastership lp, left ear records have continued excavating the archives of the artist more formally known as omer coleman jr. the result is two handpicked mid 80s instrumentals salvaged from the original master tapes, as well as an extended vocal edit on the flip for good measure. after laying his alter ego to rest omer made a handful of electronic releases on his own kansas based remo label. of these releases left ear has selected their two favourite instrumentals: lovin babe sure is fun and so good. lovin babe sure is fun was originally released in 85 and was created to celebrate a time in america where the economy was good, people were happy and love was in the air, the essence of which omer captured using his roland 808 and 303 in what may best be described as acid-boogie. so good on the other hand is a sensual downtempo cut shaped with heavy-bass, telephone samples and guitar solos that conjures images of late night rendezvous and compromising scenarios.

dj rou & lite orkestra proves to be one of those original, eclectic and interesting projects for the musical research of the current scene. they got to know each other in the summer of 2014 and a character affinity was born immediately, later transformed into a very strong artistic empathy, so much so that in the immediate future they decided to meet often between bologna and verona for jam sessions, sharing ideas. in the summer of 2017, cognitiva records, label runned by sofatalk, became aware of the project and decided without hesitating to press 1.2,3, original tracks of the release the ambassadors way ep. the compositions are a combination of the electronic drums of dj rou (mpc, korg electribe and other gears), the contrabass and the guitar of lachi + thomaspizzini, better known as lite orkestra. the result is a hybrid exuberance between jazz, afro and the experimental flow that derives from the roots of the jam sessions

opilec music s eclectic remix series rolls on with another essential package, this time tackling a single from label boss i-robots s law of robotics album back in 2008. adding their own spin to things are red axes and hiroshi watanabe aka kaito after likes of kuniyuki takahashi, djembe monks, danny ocean, los hermanos, gary martin, alexander robotnick, daniele baldelli & marco dionigi have all stepped up previously. isreali duo red axes go first, a pair known for mixing up synths and guitars in exciting new ways on labels like hivern discs, i m a cliche and esp institute amongst others. their excellent version of the track re-works it as a deep and spine tingling house cut. moody chords lull you into a hypnotic and zoned out groove that is finished with some intoxicating spoken words. hiroshi watanabe aka kaito is next, an acclaimed kompakt and transmat artist who makes succulent techno with ambient atmospheres. his brilliant version here is just that, with cosmic chords and slippery rubber beats carrying you away into the night. warm and inviting, it elevates you to the next level over its long length, it is a classy bit of techno that also comes as a stripped back instrumental version.

next up on creme organizaiton is lake haze. the hague based portuguese artist is a regular on this label having put out four eps in the last two years. hes also linked with unknown to the unknown and shall not fade so is an esteemed talent with a blistering sound that fuses futuristic techno and electro into storytelling dancefloor dynamite. space reservoirs kicks off this ep with slow but heavy drum work, acid twitches and spooky cosmic echoes. the observer picks up the pace with quick and slick kicks from the streets of detroit overlaid with ripping electro basslines and deep space atmospherics. unexplored oceanic territory is expansive electro with busted drums and echoing pads that add real scale before more acid finishes things off with real rawness. prototype is dark and heavy, with another searing baseline and crisp metallic hits, then into the unknown is a blissed out electro roller with dreamy pads and twinkling keys melt ing into the cosmos. it closes out another essential ep from this timeless producer.
dutch label field records is back with another special album project, this time from japanese producer ena aka yu asaeda. bridge is an introspective soundtrack for a documentary also called bridge - out this spring - which is about the dejima bridge, a reconstructed symbol of the dutch-japanese trading history in nagasaki, japan. the album finds the producer stepping outside of his usual remit of dark ambient and experimental music, and instead comprises ten shorter tracks that touch on abstract and rhythmic sounds that define the essence of japanese culture. although he has worked with the director before, this is ena s first original sound track and finds him freely inspired by the movie and heading in exciting and unknown directions. hugely atmospheric throughout, there is hypnotic repetition of sounds, strange audio design and a mixture of melancholic moods with more dreamy synths. sometimes gloopy rhythms gently ripple beneath soothing harmonies and at others times a micro-rhythm appears through the constantly shifting and evolving found sound loops. it s a compelling and unusual album that seamlessly mixes human emotions with a mechanical sense of industry.

conforce is back on his home label with four more of his richly detailed and hugely atmospheric techno tracks. its his first release on delsin since latest album autonomous back in 2017 and finds him in typical underwater techno territory. celestion kicks things off with smeared pads and rubbery, dubby drums instantly setting a hypnotic groove. the serene ambience makes it feel like youre deep down in the ocean and various deft sonic details drift by the keep things on the move. vessel is another fathom deep track with supple drums undulating on the sea bed as beams of synth light things up from above. theres melancholy in the pads that brings a rueful vibe, while zephyr is more troubled and turbulent thanks to the wet, gurgling synths and darker bass sounds. aerial rounds things out with heavyweight, rumbling kicks and ominous energy that keeps you on edge, despite the presence of beautifully celestial keys. as ever , it all makes for an absorbing trip.
brothers black launch the second release on their self-titled, vinyl-only label with dance-floor focussed va. brbl002 is a selection artists whom the duo hold in high regard with the addition of an original track. kicking off the release is the berlin-based dutch dj, delta funktionen. keeping true to the raw, electro-influenced sound he s renowned for, platform4e is a tough, rolling peak-time weapon thats instantly playable and recognisable. up next on the a2 is an original track from brothers black. keeping with their groove-orientated, percussion focussed style, cold shoulder is a dj focussed tool that combines quick fire percussion with a rolling low end and sharp fm stabs. leading the aa1 is one of detroit s finest, and dj veteran, eric cloutier. in keeping with his trademark deep but warm sound is alexithymia. combining swirling acid soundscapes with warm, uplifting pads and a steady groove, this track is perfect for the darker hours of the night. following the aa2 is the mysterious high mobility weapons unit. with just a handful of releases, hmwu has a distinct and highly playable sound that has become a mainstay of the brothers black record bag. staying true to his fast paced, groove-orientated productions, aeromagnetic is a deeper-edged tool thats made for the dance-floor.

next up on donato dozzy and neels spazio disponibile label is close friend and italian producer marco shuttle. the eerie label-boss is a regular on the label having put out his systema album here last year, as well as his flauto synthetico ep in 2016. his always meticulously crafted sound is rooted in dark, cavernous techno. he finds plenty of new ground in each new release, though, with some tracks being haunting ambient works and others more propulsive rhythms. this new ep features just that across four typically inventive and absorbing tracks that are as much for your head as they are for your heel.

dutch live-act and dj duo artefakt return to delsin records with an intricately produced three track release entitled falling into the light. artefakt began releasing music together in 2012 and now boast a discography spanning field records, konstrukt and deep sound channel, not to mention regular appearances on delsin where their debut album entitled kinship dropped in 2017. returning to delsin, the pairs next outing once again demonstrates their ever-evolving sound and is an exciting precursor for the launch of their own label later this year. rolling drums open the release in the blue hour as murky synths join hazy atmospherics, making way for weltformel with its racing syncopated percussion and ethereal pads that ebb and flow throughout the mix. finally, falling into the light combines springy kicks with crystalline melodies, metallic elements and rattling effects to conclude a mesmerising release.

yoruba records welcomes back label favourite mike steva with a well-balanced and forward thinking ep that both engages and pushes boundaries. opening up with love symphonik, this stutter-stepped jam practically drips with mpc flavour. up next, the message, a bold proclamation with more straight forward percussion. with added balkan flavour this one is as deep as they come. this is followed with sila where stevas chops are on full display. this engaging and well-constructed groove conjures of feelings of celebration, one thats easy to imagine taking place in the streets of macedonia. we close with zensko oro, a deep and moody percussive-led jam. this one speaks of movement, slowly building on itself and reaching a natural climax that enhances and delights the senses of the astute listener. sit back, relax and enjoy this soon-to-be essential piece of the yoruba records canon.

casey tucker is on a roll at the moment, and his infectious brand of uplifting, full-fat machine soul seems to have struck a chord in many places (not least via his reissues on for those that knoe). after appearing on love notes back in 2015, tuckers back on the label with another salvo of colourful, charming and utterly magnificent house jams shot through with the inventive programming of techno. alternative faction is many things a bubbly acid track, a swooning deep house cut and a sassy broken beat affair and yet feels utterly smooth in its execution. that time of year has plenty of motor city soul feeding into its composition, not least in the gorgeous synth strings, and new mission gets busy in the swing with all kinds of bouncing melodies and rhythms.

soul clap definitely knew what they were doing when they snapped up certifiable diva legend nona hendryx to sing on one of the cuts from their self-titled 2016 album. now ray mang has got his mitts on the parts to -shine (this is it)- and turned out three versions for his own mangled label - the classic combination of extended vocal, instrumental and radio edit versions. whichever cut suits you best, the vibe is the same, a bold and bright summer party track splashed with horns, keys and plenty more besides, although the smart money is on hendryx s legendary vocal, which soars as though no time has passed since her days working with material in 80s nyc.

label boss yse is back on pft with the long anticpated follow up to his gesamtkunstwerk ep which made it into kai alci s best of 2015 chart. if you have been following ant plate s productions under his various guises (yse, yse saint laur ant, rhythm plate, vengaboys) you know what to expect - deep, quirky, innovative house music that sounds like nothing else out there. this ep doesn t disappoint - the grooves on here are impeccable from start to finish. opener unstoppable builds the tension nicely with nagging strings and chords before letting loose with the drums. sun shadow was actually selected by red rack em as one of his best of 2017 despite not even being released. now that s literally being ahead of your time. the robot boogie of all we are is guaranteed to stop heads on the dancefloor with it s unique vocal and syncopated shuffle. closing track you told me slows the tempo slightly and is one for the deeper moments.

computer says mmm! to this electro 5-tracker from binaural, the second release on lisbon label dream ticket. jasper de jong serves up big portions of wry kraft-funk on the a, followed by jazzy afters both smooth and crunchy on the b. matched wines are a must.
the essential will & ink label continues to keep up the pressure with a new ep from museum aka anton pieete and jeroen liebregts. the pair have released on vital labels like marcel dettmann records and indigo area and make some of the most robust and powerful techno around. their three new tracks here come with a remix from resident label artist yalessa hall. opener silo is an urgent groove with warped and rumbling synth lines and frazzled textures. it s sparse and industrial as it barrels along while the list is much more wild. the drums flail around, the hits are off grid and the energy is restless and rugged. lastly from them, 1500 has punchy drum programming and watery sound effects, sci-fi motifs and a sense of turbulence that will make a real impact in the club. the raw yalessa hall remix flips the list into a freaky house track with smeared synths and big hits making for something incendiary and unhinged.
