the main ingredient is the second album by pete rock & cl smooth, originally released in 1994. characterized by sultry soul and jazz samples, the album saw a more polished sound than the duo’s debut “mecca & the soul brother” movlp1633, building on the praise that they had already garnered. the main ingredient is notable for its snappy, crispy drums and extensive use of vocal scratches. it contains some of the duo’s best known work, in the form of tracks such as the upbeat “in the house”, and the catchy “sun won’t come out”, which features a lush vocal sample from the song of the same name by harvey scales.

die offizielle wiederveröffentlichung des dub-klassikers -scientist - heavyweight dub champion- ist als 2lp-edition mit poster (60x60 cm) erhältlich! die aufnahmen des originalalbums von 1980 finden sich auf der ersten lp - sie wurden mit den musikern der roots radics in bestbesetzung im channel one studio eingespielt und im king tubby studio abgemischt, am mischpult saß dabei hopeton overton brown, besser bekannt als scientist. für die produktion zeichnete henry junjo lawes verantwortlich. auf der zweiten lp finden sich die dazugehörigen versionen der sänger, vertreten durch barrington levy. für dieses herausragende re-issue projekt wurde die top-adresse, was audio-mastering in europa angeht, die firma soundmasters in london, engagiert. das dazugehörige artwork von tony mcdermott hat bis heute nichts an seiner faszination verloren.

lovers rock recordings celebrates its tenth release with another lush compilation featuring tracks by three core members of the lr family and newcomer gunnar haslam. opener “vacation” by ital sees the label boss crafting a supple dj weapon out of a lysergic sonic ecosystem. the rapidly-maturing dj wey returns to the fold under his dj python alias with “amazonia,” an ambient bomb that allows a deceptively simple hook to lilt across a thumping reggaeton rhythm. gunnar haslam makes his lr debut with “vector no campo,” blending modular acid and perfectly crunched electro drums. finally sleeper cell close out with the shimmering, haunting “v.” the first lr release of 2016, lr no.10 exemplifies the label’s ethos and sound while pointing to the future, with eps by ital & halal, yoshinori hayashi and others slated for later in the year.

uk techno stalwart ben sims adopts his ron bacardi alias for an outing on bass culture records, bringing with him three varying slices of 4x4-based music. d’julz has a deep penchant for bass and funk, and this is evident throughout the ep. we get off to a rugged start with ‘rock your body’, a deliciously dark slice of grumbling techno. intertwined with the morose bassline is a mysterious, tribal-esque female vocal, warped and twisted to add a primal feel to the track. on the flip, bacardi puts his a different hat on giving us ‘first effort’ a vivacious funk-laced hybrid, which teases you spitting out intermittent trumpets and other such live instruments. finally, ‘the money/dub’ goes straight into disco territory with that oh-so-familiar entrancing rhythm that will keep you fixed to its beat from start to finish. that filtered wah-wah guitar is impossible to resist, especially when combined with such crisp percussion. sheer quality from monsieur bacardi…

following last years meditative mirage ep and the stunning * beat 13* on lovers rock no. 6, earthen sea returns to lr with his debut lp ink. his heaviest and most ambitious work to date, ink is a work of hypnotic, monastic beauty. over the last ten years, earthen sea, aka jacob long, has been developing a sound world all his own, built on a foundation of vaporous grey-black drones and pulsing kick drums. an impressionistic dream-scape of american life, ink journeys between the eerily vacant “entrance” to the feverish “stateless” and the shimmering perfection of “all men know the truth.” swaths of violent, glacial noise collide with lost voices transmitted through the ether, framed between moments of transcendent clarity. following an extended three song suite, closing track * blues in black ink* rides a gently falling piano melody into a finale that is as infused with political rage as it is with private melancholy. with ink, earthen sea arrives fully formed, an artist in utter command of his craft.
