RAT ALERT
12 Inch
16.12.08
>theres a rat in the kitchen what am i gonna do? theres a rat in the kitchen what am i gonna do?…im gonna teach that rat thats what im gonna do, im gonna teach that rat, thats what im gonna do<… sang ub40 back in the day but these days the best way to teach a rat to dance is to hit it with the latest made to play release from jan driver. the shadowy figure that is jan driver lurks in the depths of the berlin dance scene and only exposes himself to strangers in the park and via the medium of unleashing massive sonically charged dance floor bombs like >rat alert<. for more than twelve years he has been producing on labels as diverse as polydor, am:pm, virgin, southern fried and klang elecronik as well as his own imprint, grandpetrol. this release is causing a massive stir with the heads that matter including roland rat, ratty out of wind in the willows, stuart little, splinter and most importantly dean gaffney aka rat robby out of eastenders who uses it to ease the pain of being an unemployed actor. whether youre a cat, rat or straight up t*at you need to buy this, love it, play it and scare the sh*t out of the local vermin in a club near you.
HYPOCHONDER EP
12 Inch
15.12.08
the berlin based dj and highgrade-artist jens bond presents with his new ep >hypochonder< his latest work. bond is allready known for his percussive tracks beside that the resident dj of berlins watergate club is well established thanks to his collaborations with benno blome (sender records) and guido schneider (pokerflat). in the namegiving titeltrack for this new ep for highgrade jens bond gives it all: stakkatos of rolling percussions meet pearling synth-lines, creating a jacking, neverending groove. >got some…< develops this recipe for success more into a slightly darker direction, while keeping up beeing changefull with the same >hands-up<-factor. instead of a break mr. bond serves us with >paulista grill< the next highlight of this ep. massive, with a touch of darkness, build on a strong fundament of a funky, dry-asa-bone groove. three tracks, simultaneously eventfull and homogeneous, carrying clearly jens bonds signature.
SADISTIC TENDENCIES (2X12)
2x12 Inch
12.12.08
after a wait of 15 years and numerous 12es, e s, random compilation tracks and remixes rude 66 has finally finished a full length album and dare we say it s his most cohesive work to date? sadistic tendencies begins where 2005 s three faces of fear ep ended, with 18 tracks that slide like snails on the edge of straight razors, exploring the dark side of the human condition. thematically connected, deep, dark and mind bendingly analogue, sadistic tendencies is both tense and full of release, sometimes brooding and encroaching at other times exploding into throbbing synth laden dance floor bombs. superlatives aside, sadistic tendencies works exceptionally well as an album and is one of those rare 70 minute journey s that can be enjoyed from beginning to end – like a good horror movie that scares the hell out of you, but keeps drawing you in.

LET THE SUNSHINE OUT / JEROME SYDENHAM REMIXES
12 Inch
10.12.08
this stunning vocal track by flora cruz is nothing short of inspiring. jerome sydenham shows his versatility again by delivering an uplifting full vocal mix... a raw and energetic vocal dub and last but not least a raw grinding dubstrumental... the result is a deep, well rounded and most satisfying 12inch single in the true tradition of ibadan records
whether it is early december or late august, gel abril keeps it hot or cool - depending on which side of the equator youre on - with an exceptional 12inch of synth soaked, bleep saturated and tech drenched house. all exclusively produced by the talented shlomi aber in their hometown of tel aviv, israel. collectively they have released on josh winks ovum rec as well as their own acclaimed be as one imprint. eerie sounds meshed with techno chirps are trademark elements of the be as one crew sound, but it is the dramatic synth chord breakdowns and perfectly plump and rounded kick drum that stand out in this outing. so plump and juicy in fact, one can almost get lost in >miranda< through the rhythmic thudding of the pristine bass drum. suddenly a parade of jumbled synth snippets frolic and bobble around like umpa lumpas randomly jumping on a trampoline. think this track is all fun and games? play this peak time and watch the crowd do the >tel aviv shuffle<. don t know what that is? watch it appear before your eyes as the hypnotic sound washes over the ears of the captivated crowd

original mix, big beats and massive vibe make the original a real dance floor monster. with an almost house vibe its hard to accurately classify, though ticking nearly all the boxes for a trance smash with awesome build ups and breakdowns. michael cassette remix, inventing their own style which you might call a kind of retro progressive house house the cassette boys never fail to impress with their big room sounds. this remix is certainly not an exception to the rule with aggressive beats and groovy oldskool sounds. store n forward remix, well whats left to say about the snf guys when everything they do is just awesome? another solid remix to add to their portfolio, a progressive sound of gritty basslines and trance euphoria.

after 17 years of working together, tejada & leviste are back in the studio again putting their modular synths to good work. m tracks (m as in modular) features 4 analog workouts in varying styles. m track 1 features a melodic deep, yet driving track reminiscent of the duos best known work. m track 2 and 3 showcase a trackier sound focusing on basic elements while m track 4 turns in a much more experimental direction. the approach to this ep was a very fun, hands on process. analog sequencers are used to drive the various modular synths and their components. this process allowed for a more organic feel as the unstable electronics change over time as well as the manual changing of parameters over time. systems used include doepfer and frostwave sequencers, and modular systems consisting of cwejman, doepfer, harvestman and bananalogue modules. analog drum machines aided in the rhythms, however m track 3 was generated from pure modular hardware including the drums.

meridian is a perfect example of dj 3000s evolution as a producer. the mark of a good producer is to never stop growing, once you do, you are condemned to making the same record over and over again and hoping no one notices. this record is the perfect marriage between the percussive staples of the motech sound, and a new lighter exploration of sound elements by dj 3000. >meridian< dares you to sit still while listening to it, or to stand on the wall if you are near a dance floor. its ability to make you dance as well as captivating your ear if you are sitting and listening illustrates the dynamic flexibility of the motech sound.

adam beyers drumcode label has its ten year anniversary this year and there will be many releases as well as a massive compilation album project later in the year featuring brand new tracks from many of the label s key artists. one of the newest additions is the producer of this new release - tor lowkrantz or mighty thor as he is known. this 4 tracker again demonstrates the open musical policy of the label. the last hardcell release was a fine piece of work demonstrting influences from both hard and minimal techno sensibilities. this release focuses more on the harder end of the scale but still remains fresh with its almost old jeff mills and rob hood influences. all 4 tracks have a fat groove and are saturated with funk yet still pack serious punch in any set. another winner from drumcode

next big coup on the well-established höhenregler label with finest minimal pumping beats and fractional psychedelic hooklines. plays from önür özer, loco dice, monika kruse, nick curly, pete tong, someone else, italoboys, laurent garnier
this is quite simply one of the most glorious records you will hear this year. it would be easy to lazily reference it against classic period rephlex/planet mu stuff (oops, i just did!), and indeed it appears to share some of the same heritage (even going so far as to feature a remix of rephlex artist global goon in its tracklisting) - but chris leary aka ochre is obviously a man on his own mission. gorgeously lush, but at the same time super-funky…as electronic as kraftwerk starring in a remake of tron, yet somehow as pastoral and organic as edward elgar…much like his label-mate ed chamberlain, leary manages that tricky task of being supremely technical in his programming and arrangements, but without losing the heart and soul of the music amidst all the studio trickery. you know that old chestnut often said when referring to vintage or classic music, >they dont make them like that any more<? well they do…and here it is! simply fantastic.
