this obscure lost soundtrack for an even more obscure (and also lost and never finished) italia violenta cop movie was recently discovered when i bought the dusty reel tapes from a restaurant owner in fiumicino, a seaside town near rome. panter 777 aka il labirinto di roma violenta aka the maze of violence, he told me, was directed by gervasio giardano in 1981 and was considered too (politically) explicit by the movie production company who dropped the project after the first screening. the soundtrack, an explosion of wahwah funk riffs and juicy analog synthesizers, was composed by an obscure band called nacho patrol. the restaurant owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, was one of the band members and composed most of the tracks. there is no doubt that leipzig is a pulsating place in terms of electronic music. however, the potential of the city seems to be experiencing a new surge - not least due to up-and-coming producers like sven tasnadi and stefan schultz aka juno6. both belong to the generation of musicians who initially released their tracks for free on net-labels but have since have made the leap to vinyl. while sven tasnadi has already released great eps on liebe*detail, smallville records and of course on cargo edition, juno6 just recently made his debut with >salamis< in spring 2008 on broque. now they have joined forces with their first collaboration for cargo edition. both tracks on the ep are characterised by elaborate rhythms, a special deepness and intricately arranged sounds. >aramis< tells apparently different stories which merge seamlessly during its 14 minutes. the track also explores the hypnotic moments on the dancefloor in a very subtle and complex manner - reduced but full of vibrancy at the same time. >genau so< on the b-side takes a similar line, but adds a spark of funk, which combines to form its distinctive rhythm. sven tasnadi & juno6 have created two modern house tracks which are full of character.

rezkars fascination with music began with his parents record collection. listening to local radio stations as a child, he heard 80s tracks. as an adult he discovered the magic of 60s and 70s jazz and funk. one day, his cousin played a track that he immediately fell in love with. he later learned that this was house music. he discovered the fruity loops sequencer software and thought, why not try to make my own tracks, after all, it cant really be that hard? deep house can sound deceptively simple. its a bit like japanese anime, rezkar says. it looks so cute and easy to draw, but try to actually draw it, and you will discover its even harder than realistic drawings. the thing about house is that if you try too hard it can come across as being very cheesy, but then again, if you dont do enough it can sound incomplete. finding the balance is not easy, rezkar admits. after hearing his music, one finds that he is learning this lesson quite well.

lets remixer speak! >it was great to be asked to do this. originally, i wanted to do something really quirky and funky with the strange vocal in human bond, one of my favorite old tracks. i tried a few times but i couldnt really get a vibe going in the funk realm. so i listened to the original over and over again and then the lightbulb turned on. i realized that the original was a monster rave track, like what you would hear in a warehouse in detroit in the 90s. so i threw out my original idea and went crazy with a huge techno builder, something to hype a big rave just like the original. maybe this doesnt sound exactly like what i usually do but that was the fun of making it< claude vonstroke. aa: >bounce your body to the box was one of the first kms records that i owned and it was all about the mike >hitman< wilson mix and force field on the b side. the production on the original was huge. the 909 groove just pounded everything... when that came out there was nothing that came close to it. so it was an honor and a challenge to mix it myself. first came the futurist bounce mix... not released on vinyl, anmerkung, ... which is more of a cover version than a remix. i had a lot of fun with this one but it definitely has a signature that steps away from the original. so i had to take a run at it one more time to pay a proper homage to the original with the flashback mix< mike shannon...

ruede hagelsteins the modest theme has proven to be one of souvenirs most provocative releases so far. released in the summer, the tracks dramatic horn hook is so epic it belongs in a science fiction film and as a piece of forward thinking techno, it ranks among one of souvenirs best. now the track is back with a remix from souvenir spearheads tiefschwarz alongside a new track from berlin based ruede. semikolon is another dark and dubby deep tech-housy outing for ruede that begins with a dramatic spoken word by naneci and ominous organ stabs. as the track progresses it takes on a chicago house vibe re-imagined at 10am in the panorama bar. an urgent bell begins to ring through the track raising the tension as the vocal intones a surreal chant before giving way to huge synth stabs that lead the track into a slow motion emotional explosion. just when things can get any more hectic the crescendo sinks to silence compressing the energy before the beats emerge back in their earlier deep house guise. ali and bast schwarz take their turn at remixing the modest theme fresh from their incendiary remix of emad kamandians kamanche for souvenir 012. the signature dramatic horn riff remains albeit injected with new percussion lending the track a tough tech house appeal that places it within the context of 2008s underground house sound. both tracks are another addition to souvenirs impressive collection of music aimed at the head just as much as they are at the heart and feet.
