following afrobeat makers vol.1 (sold out), comet is pleased to announce the second volume of the afrobeat makers collection, due for release in june this year: the tony allen’ original afrobeat patterns revisited by few of the best international dj/producers, with among them: doctor l (paris), thiago franca (sao paulo), mps pilot (amsterdam), or gnowee (paris) tony allen has spread afrobeat to the corners of the globe, a perfect synthesis of tradition and sophistication – his various collaborations with great artists from all genres and styles are a truly proof of his openness. doctor l, paris based music producer, is a sound activist going through the musical galaxies, fusioning from 80’s punk rock, to hip-hop, electronica and afrobeat ... in 2000, already on comet records, he brought lagos afrobeat towards the third millennium with the album black voices by tony allen, and even send it to the moon, with his other project, psyco on da bus. since 2002, dj/producer mps pilot (nl) has immersed himself in the cutting-edge tropical bass scene. in every possible direction and slippage between all different genres, mps pilot maps the crosspollination and divergence of contemporary music. he performed on 3 continents, both in remote desert or major festivals. thiago franca is a producer, musician and saxophonist from são paulo arts scene, this year with his power afro-punk trio meta meta, they released for the first time in europe (mais um discos -uk), their debut album metal metal. thiago is meanwhile developping his african rooted solo outfit, sambanzo, and was also in criolo’s touring band for two years, where he met tony allen, which led to two collaborations on the the afrobeat makers and meta meta’ albums.

part two of the ep features the motor city drum ensemble remix, and the original “in a silent mix” version from 1999, a track out of its time when released on allen’s sole record “black voices”. a long serving dekmantel veteran, danilo plessow was there from the start. after compiling the first selector’s compilation last year, mcde turns tony allen’s masterpiece in a jam, with added house beats, giving the funk number the edit treatment. the final mix sounds like the kind of track you would hear mcde play in one of his sets as he’s firing up the heat. the organ sounds and trumpets are left high in the mix, to create an unforgettable hook that resonates throughout, in complete motor city style.

as part of the ten-year anniversary dekmantel presents the final record in a ten-part-ep series. split into two parts due to its immensity, the final instalment is a re-issue of tony allens asiko (in a silent mix) originally released in 1999 and remixes by motor city drum ensemble and ricardo villalobos. the first part features a grandiose 29-minute ricardo villalobos version of the afrobeat masters cut. a true collaboration of giants.having been a regular at the festival for several years now, villalobos delivers a remix, one of his longest to date, that only he can produce. allowing the percussion to breathe into a monumental rhythm, villalobos warps the vocals, restructuring the bass and drums into a rolling dub-fusion of techno that is characteristic of his remixes to date, yet still breathtaking in its execution. afrobeat-minimalism, with dub-infused fire, and near psychedelic ambience that perfectly synchs the worlds of tony allen, and ricardo villalobos, two legends who’ve helped re-shape the face of music. highlighting the diversity of sounds that have come to represent the dutch label and festival series, the eps to date have encompassed a range of artists and genres, featuring label favourites, as well as whole bunch of debuting artists. the ep series kicked off in march 2018, and over the course of a year featured the likes of gigi masin, lena willikens, burnt friedman, donato dozzy, the egyptian lover, palms trax, and more.

originally released in 2002, here reissued as a remastered version tony allen talks about the album: after black voices and psyco on da bus albums, i came back with homecooking which was an album filled with guests. i brought in ty, who had remixed some of my work previously, to rap on the record, and damon albarn, who had already sung about me on music is my radar. since the early days ive been trying to find things that everybody will want to listen to. ive always been pushing afrobeat in different directions. heres another one again, another style, almost clean but still rough, raggedy and radical.

fresh off the heels of the success of their ‘waiting ground’ ep, the boys in black, frank & tony, are skating back onto the scene with another four track summer stomper, ‘under the jaguar sun’. the a-side starts things off with the titular track, a rollicking deep house number primed for sunset raves. a bouncing and lush bass line is the back bone of the track, as crisp hi-hats, distant, yearning pads, and shimmering bells propel dancers forward into eyes closed euphoria. things ramp up quickly into peak-time ecstasy on the breakaway edit of solo andata’s “a ballet of hands.” a whirling dervish of delicate music boxes, bowed guitars, delicate music boxes, and distant horns swirl around and weave in and out between a skipping drum pattern, pushing and pulling alongside a gruff and stuttering bass, perfect for those late night rooftop ventures.
