mr. statik with previous contributions from joe claussell, move d, mr. ties, reagenz, discrete circuit and their very own away soundsystem, the berlin label away achieved a great deal of attention since its first release back in 2015. after having played at their infamous party series before, the greek all-rounder mr. statik now also debuts as a producer on away. as emphasized with releases on such labels as bpitch control, amam, or rotary cocktail, the resident of athens club six d.o.g.s draws inspiration from pop culture like science-fiction movies as well as comic books, also reflected in his rogue cherub ep. info rogue cherub ep its an open secret that mr. statik has a strong penchant for working with vocalists, and the title track is no different. starting off with an ingenious medley assembled through samples, rhythmic elements, and a funk-infused bass-line, rogue cherub ep highlights the greeks unordinary approach on house music. despite the partly broken, partly playful vibe its dave ajus distinctive voice holding everything together in a serene fashion. no less than the acknowledged master matthew herbert himself scales the hybrid down, attaching just the right disco-house touches to create yet another dance floor gem. morning star on the flipside tops off aways fifth catalogue number by a well-crafted techno-meets-dub workout unfolding mr. statiks versatile core strengths as a producer.

ltd 50% deal ...significant success for artists is based on two things: talent and timing. dave.i.d has talent by the spadeful but his timing may also be spot on. when dave.i.d released his debut single in march 09 he was probably too ahead of the game but now as we enter the last third of 2010 it feels right on the money. daves initial release went down very well though. paul lester in the guardians important new band of the day feature totally lost it, calling dave.i.d >totally brilliant< and dubbing him >aphex timbaland<. his single was voted single of the year in dazed & confused and made the end of year round-up in drowned in sound. now with the amazing zola jesus setting up so well around the world and the dark electronica coming more to the fore outside its nerd roots, dave.i.d sounds perfectly in tune with the unhappy, troubled sound of now.

mei zhiyong had been instrumental in arranging dp’s tour of china. when mei zhiyong and dave phillips first met in beijing in july 2014, mei spoke not a word of english and dp not a word of chinese. and they we were to embark on an 18 city tour together. verbal communication between mei and dp was obviously difficult to say the least. it would often result in comical misunderstandings, total puzzlement or bewilderment, but it would also be a source of constant amusement with wonderful moments of instinctive trust. but then there is sound, the ultimate language… to return the favor, dp arranged a tour for mei and himself in october 2015 through 20 european cities. which is where the source material was recorded. dp then selected, dissected and transformed those recordings to work out something different, not just a collaboration, not just an amalgam of two styles, but something new for both. the compositions on this lp are the result.

energydream ep is entirely based on vocal house samples, deprived of their frenzy soul and arranged into a new melancholic mood. the frosty vibrations generated from the textures produced and the ambient arrangements bring the listener into a dimensionwhich lives within a purist vision of the dance floor and anastral journey. a typical approach which has been marking dave s productions for a long time.

ultratheque pays tribute to glasgow s first ever laser disco and the first dancehall that hifi sean frequented as a teenager. soft cell/the grid analogue keyboard maestro dave ball adds his trademark sound on this solid electro groove making it sound like some lost dub from nyc danceteria days dave himself with skull bandits crank up the electroclash vibes on the remix and turn it into a full on dancefloor onslaught like ultratheque itself was back in those laser-tastic days.

dave.i.d likes to think for himself. always has done. its the reason why his debut album didnt go quite according to his initial plan. he was going to make, to use his own words, >something pretty simple and straightforward<. but then he noticed lots of his friends were discovering new beliefs. some even tried to convert him. >im very open-minded to different beliefs, but i question and see things slightly differently,< he says. without necessarily wanting to, he found himself reflecting on existential questions. >the album is a record of the time that it was made, and thats what was going on in my life at the time. i didnt necessarily want to make the debut album like that. i felt i had to make it<. the cerebral inspiration catapulted him into musics outer rim. he beamed back a dark, dense sometimes confrontational sound, but ultimately compelling sound. but, in the end, it turned out to be a happy accident because the resulting record, called >response< appropriately enough, is mind-bendingly inventive, brilliantly off-kilter and constantly surprising. crucially, the tough sonics are paired with killer melodies: this is deep, heavy music you can hum. the records he was listening to while making >response< help make sense of his singular sound

following off from the widely acclaimed >gangs< ep, dave.i.d brings a new epic, aggressive and tribal sounding record, which is a refreshing outburst from the rest of the new music we are currently swamped by. this is a creation of dave.i.ds perception of modern reality and his life within that and >response< represents this perfectly.
