tenor singer johnny clarke had many false starts in his youthful days. hanging around studio one as a schoolboy with jacob miller, clarke was supposed to record material written for him by bob andy, but somehow never made the grade. his 1973 debut recording for lesser-known producer glen stair was not released, and early work for clancy eccles failed to hit, though ‘everyday wondering’ for rupie edwards made an underground impact in britain and new york. subsequent singles for keith hudson and glen brown also did not get very far, but the breakthrough finally came when bunny lee asked him to sing ‘none shall escape the judgement,’ which was written by the singer earl zero, it became a massive hit that launched the ‘flying cymbal’ craze (based on an open-and-closed high-hat cymbal pattern, adapted from the soul train theme), and clarke became one of lee’s most reliable hit-makers, partly because lee stoked a rivalry between him and cornell campbell, whom lee had previously asked to voice ‘none shall escape.’ clarke’s satisfaction lp was recorded at harry j for lee, voiced at king tubby’s studio, and issued by third world in 1979. it is a set largely comprised of cover tunes, such as the strong opening update of the paragons’ ‘riding for a fall,’ the title track adapting their rock steady hit ‘my satisfaction’ in a post-rockers style. better still is the hard-hitting ‘reality’ tune, ‘play fool, get wise,’ which uses a proverb to relate a means of avoiding trouble on the dog-eat-dog mean streets of kingston.

an mini lp of works by denis mpunga and paul k. combining elements of traditional african music with experimental electronics, the belgian/congolese duo released only a handful of tracks, scattered across a few rare lp and cassette compilations that were put out in the mid eighties by obscure european labels . this release also includes a few previously unreleased songs that were found on the original master tapes. 180gram pressing. big tip!

before he was nigeria’s self-proclaimed mr lover boy, felix lebarty was an upcoming musician in the country’s edo-delta region. his big brother, aigbe, was a legendary highlife bandleader, but felix paid his dues playing guitar with thony shorby nwenyi and the collection of stars, along with fellow star mighty flames bassist, willy nfor. perversely, girls for sale was released after lover boy, the slick disco album that cemented his place in nigerian music history. it is a collection of tracks lebarty made early in his career, when his music was rawer and his pickup lines less sophisticated and less practised.

robo arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from nigeria’s ogun state. a founding member of pogo ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on sexy thing too. one listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it’s pretty clear that playing bass is where robo’s heart lay. especially when he gets to slap it.

in the early 1980s, nigerian was booming and recording studios used the oil money sloshing around to fit their studios with the latest state-of-the-art recording equipment. with the equipment came a new, slicker sound and a new breed of producers like lemmy jackson, jake sollo, tony okoroji and nkono teles who became bigger stars than the musicians they recorded. such was the fate of sony enang with don’t stop that music

mark rae is the man behind one of the key uk music movements of the last 25 years. as a founder of the shop fat city records and the label grand central, mark worked with some of the worlds biggest artists going on to earn several platinumm discs with his work as one half of the highly respected production duo rae & christian. this project is a worlds first autobiography and album, the release is packaged as a gatefold 10 inch which opens out to the book held within. the 40 000 word book covers the author mark rae s journey through the music industry. it follows the creation and dissolution of fat city and grand central records, rae & christian and yesking. the underground club scenes of manchester, gang wars, success, failure, working with bobby womack, jay z and the pharcyde. the project has been supported by whosampled, dj magazine, vice and the tate modern. the artwork is exceptional featuring an historical montage throughout the inner gatefold sleeve. the music features guest vocals from tony d who was a big influence in the original grand central records sound, soul king pete simpson, multi instrumentalist shawn lee and kate rogers.

new ep from italian producer bioshi, a former itf world champion and hardware obsessive who debuted on original cultures in 2012 with the formula ep. bedroom tales collects five new instrumental productions in the vein of the electronic hip-hop of the beat scene. completing the ep are two remixes from rbma alumnis jolly mare (who also mastered the release) and daisuke tanabe, who each bring a different twist to the beats. available on 12inch with design by bologna s paper resistance. early support from om unit, kutmah, jay scarlett, nts radio.

it’s hard to get a handle on nigerian musicians nash dodoo, charlie cuul and jonas caulley. in 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the bml chapels. and in the same year, calling themselves the beta yama group, they put out free love, a belated love letter to san francisco’s summer of love and an album altogether focused on more worldly concerns. free love is a small slice of haight-ashbury transported to the polygram studios in lagos. ‘te revoir’ is mamas and papas jamming with sergeant pepper’s beatles. ‘free love’ offers a respectful nod towards je t’aime-era serge gainsbourg. sure, ‘revolution’ gets hard and funky and ‘rain’ flirts briefly with a calypso reggae sound, but the majority of the album is cheesecloth and flowers in your hair. insanely rare – and worth buying for the freaky cover art alone – free love is a funky, reverb heavy call for love, peace and sweet, sweet loving. what more could you want from an album?

a bona-fide nigerian prince and probably the only musician to have ever played with fela kuti, miles davis and bob marley, eji oyewole combined african highlife with western jazz to create a hybrid so that was as smooth as it was funky. his first album, charity begins at home was an angry tirade against corruption in nigeria. me & you is his ‘relationship’ album, a brighter and happier set of songs that sees eji all loved up, presumably with the mysterious ‘cameleon’ featured on the cover. eji’s flute is no longer a strident voice raised in anger. instead, on ‘me & you’ and ‘i’m a dancer’ it is a playful line of seduction. on the wonky and woozy ‘eniafelamo’ his sax is a post-coital salutation. even the one political track, ‘long live nigeria’, is a loved up call for peace, progress and trust. chilled, assured and dexterious, me & you is a sophisticated showcase of eji oyewole’s chops. ‘this is the beginning of an atomic musical evolution,’ he declares on the cover. ‘brothers and sisters, stay cool.’

how do you follow up a stone-cold afro funk classic like village boogie? simple. gather together some of the hottest players in nigeria, take them down to the phonodisk studios in ijebu igbo and let them loose on a bunch dancefloor fillers you spent the last four years ‘road testing’ in kaduna. and don’t forget to get lady franka and mariam pledge in on backing vocals. those girls know how to fire up a party. it helps, of course, if you’re steve ‘dudu’ black. steve had a god-given knack for writing combustible dance tunes and the contacts in the industry to get the likes of willy nfor, willy roy and felix lebarty to make them explode. from the opening track, ‘osasuima’, the heat never stops. on ‘no stopping me now’ and ‘ololufe/ stay the night’, it’s almost too hot to handle. polished in a studio in london while musical youth recorded pass the dutchie in the next room, happy birthday to u is the gift that keeps on giving – an irresistible blend of highlife, afro beat and afro funk that is guaranteed to start a party on any dance floor.

kiki gyan’s star didn’t burn long, but it burned bright. drafted into the afro funk super group, osibisa, at 15, he was millionaire by 18 and regarded as one of the best keyboardists in the world by 21. ‘life was good, man,’ he told journalist kweku sakyi-addo. ‘too good!’. in 1983 he dived head first into the new york party scene. he took a lot of drugs, spent a lot of time in clubs and got together a team of crack local musicians to record feelin’ alright, his third and final solo album. all the kiki gyan trademark elements are present and correct. the album is unique a blend of highlife music with electronic funk and disco. ‘rosemary’ follows the formula most closely and was a hit across nigeria and ghana. but on ‘give it to me’, ‘love to love you’ and the title track, you’ll hear a slicker, boogie-influenced sound that has made feelin’ alright one of his most sought-after albums. kiki gyan would never hit such heights again. his addictions eventually took hold and he died aged 47, destitute and alone. feelin’ alright remains one of the brightest stars in his extraordinary constellation.

n’toko ist ein experimenteller hip hop-künstler und produzent aus slowenien. seine ersten sporen verdiente er sich als frontmann eines lokalen hip hop-kollektivs namens moveknowledgement. n’toko wurde schnell durch sein technisches können und seine schnelligkeit als rapper bekannt und gewann dadurch sogar zwei nationale freestyle-wettbewerbe hintereinander. neben drei slowenisch-sprachigen alben veröffentlichte er mehrere eps in englischer sprache, von denen zwei auch in japan auf dem markt kamen. diese beiden scheiben haben mittlerweile kultstatus bei underground hip hop-fans und liebhabern alternativer musik erreicht. parallel dazu spielte n’toko ausgiebige touren in europa und den usa, wo er gast auf diversen festivals war (u.a. reeperbahn festival, glastonbury, exit, inmusic, best buy theatre nyc). derzeit engagiert n’toko sich auch politisch in slowenien und hat sich zum viel-gelesenen kolumnist und autor gemausert. auf unique erscheint sein neues album “emirates”, und es vereint kritische texte, straighte beats und düstere, elektronische sounds.

trained in the art of deejay toasting by the legendary dennis alcapone, lester bulllock initially called himself alcapone junior, until maverick record producer lee scratch perry renamed him dillinger in the early 1970s, following his success on a west kingston sound system called smith the weapon, based in the ghetto of payne avenue. perry cut dillingers first dozen tracks, and there was early work for other producers such as prince tony, augustus pablo, enos mcleod and phil pratt, then, dillingers debut album, ready natty dreadie, was a local hit for studio one, but the cb200 set for island catapulted him to international prominence. yet, the dillinger material with the roughest edge was always produced by bunny striker lee, as this lp, answer my question, so amply demonstrates. first issued in the netherlands on the scramble label in 1977, it shows dillinger on fearsome form, his relaxed rhyming toasts tackling sound system matters, the rastafari lifestyle, action movie subplots, the highs and lows of romantic relationships, the need to help the less fortunate, and other burning issues of the day with biting wit and verbal dexterity, all delivered over tough aggrovators rhythms—including an unusual cut of the three piece suit rhythm. go deh! reissued on lp and cd, on cd for the first time ever!

produced and recorded in 1965 during a time when chicago soul was one of the most influential sounds in r&b.the dontells entered the studio and cut two tracks that put that sound on full display. the session was led by producer calvin carter, world famous arranger johnny pate-along with the cities top musicians. these tracks were never released and have only been heard by a few people until now. the a side “move on down the line” grabs you from the first second the needle drops. a mid tempo love song with a trademark arrangement from pate and a vocal melody and approach in the style of chicago’s king of soul, curtis mayfield. “there goes a fool” is the b side and is a reminder why the dontells were one of the best groups out of the windy city. another brilliant production with a top notch arrangement. horns, strings, a swinging backbeat and that signature chicago vocal sound lead by the sweet harmonies of nate, leroy, manuel & ralph. this is no doubt a 60’s soul classic in 2017!
