nico nightingale, aka neud photo, is no stranger to collaborations. the new yorker s latest sees him teaming up with cristiano f. grimaldi to form intrzn, a partnership meshing a free style approach to melodies with cold rhythms. their -zone- quartet is a twilight of fluctuating moods. percussion is bare, allowing bright bars to shine and darker moments to fester. music which in one breath is elated and uplifting and, the next, dejected and downtrodden.

eye o is the convergence of a few bay area stalwarts—kevin woodruff, formerly of tussle, and jason schwartz - and “deux o & debut” is their first studio-recorded public offering. the five-track, fifty-minute- long lp is a weaving journey through a pastiche of styles that’re all nephews, cousins, brothers, sisters of one another. kraut-rooted motorik drums reconfigure into more complicated math-y patterns, razor-sharp dance-punk guitars stretch out and dissolve into dubby post-rock atmospherics, synth loops you’d more commonly find in house tracks get grafted onto fuzzy psychedelic breakdowns, hard rock licks lock into chunky industrial grooves.
less for dancefloor destruction and more for trippy weekenders, the instrumental record manages to both be a focused, cerebral, conceptual hunk of fat to chew on and a spaced-out, intuitive ride through the cosmos. for use during those off-kilter small hours of the night just as much as it is vision quests and introspective weekends. it’s rare that an outpouring of so much can feel so simple and sublime.

airhead has put out some great music this year. kicking off with the radiophonic ice of kazzt for mumdance s different circles and just recently the low slung cristobal on ps records his production chops get bolder by the minute. it s no surprise seeing as he spent much of the previous year producing key tracks for the incredible -1-800 dinosaur presents trim- album alongside bullion and boothroyd as well as regularly touring and writing with long-time musical partner james blake. back with another 12- on hemlock, his first since 2014 s rolling october / macondo this time the sound is dustier, warmer, but packing twice the punch all the while retaining his signature understated wild-man groove. both tracks are capable on dancefloor whilst richly layered, packed with detail and arranged for maximum connectivity with contemporary beat styles such as house, techno and breaks. what happened to ricky martin? shaded is the twisted latin stepper you didn t know you needed, so much, right now. polished drums dug into a tweaky sci-fi soundbed make way for the curveball drop not every dj will be able to style out but those brave few that do will reap the reward. captain, we have an incoming transmission. by now, antipolo will be on the long-range scanners of a several fleets in this sector and is finally ready for replication and deployment. beaming out to the far reaches of the dancefloor we have bass, breakbeats and synth hooks but not as we know it together forming an advanced composite bond of extreme strength and malleability.

tom flynn marks his first appearance on exit strategy, starting off with a strong package of four tracks. each of them tends towards a slightly different side of his ecstatic and clean production style - making this a very coherent well balanced collection of killers.

rotterdam based duo arkvs release “oppression” ep through the prruk black series. the result is an exciting package of futuristic techno sounds and searing drums. the duo has managed to find a perfectly executed trip throughout the different sides of arkvs. while the general tone is darkish throughout, there are some uplifting atmospheres and hints of hope to be found in this package. while the title track is a thumping piece of dancefloor techno, the cinematic voyage “our deepest fear” is a stand-out production of adventurous electronics. on the b-side we find “chose to defy”, which is a tough work of dark techno and the somewhat more mellow “nonviolence” on which an intrusive bassline is combined with some beautiful synth sounds.

aiby returns to vizual with an amazing ep, albeit without the noise. this solo project is deep, dark and freaky and showcases aiby’s love for vintage gear. yet there’s nothing old about these tracks — aiby’s sound is fresh and forward looking with hard driving beats that have just the right amount of wiggle. these tracks sound great played loud and are perfect for deep and dirty late nites. a forthcoming iz & diz remix of “you need a freak” will round out the project quite nicely.

in physics, entropy is a quantity generally described as the measure of disorder within any kind of thermodynamic system, including the universe. it counts the microscopic states that system can assume when open, interacting with others or getting altered by external conditions.
thus, entropy makes for the perfect description of the way ilpo väisänen (pan sonic, i- lp-o in dub) and dirk dresselhaus (schneider tm, a s s, locust fudge) have approached music creation since the establishment of their collaborative project angel (now die angel) in 1999. allowing energy to flow freely through machines, bodies and different acoustic conditions, they’ve generated a powerful archive of mutating sonic states. a kind of creative attitude that favors exploring the physical complexity of unstructured electronics.
that’s where the title for their first release on cosmo rhythmatic comes from, “entropien” being the finnish word and the german plural for entropy. getting back to the stripped down set of their beginnings (modular synths, effects, and processed guitar), they’ve come out with one of their most, intense, rawest and noisiest albums to date, showcasing an impressing scale of dynamics while attacking the senses with belligerent tones. oren ambarchi also shows up on two tracks, intertwining his drums, field recording, and guitar within the duo’s discordant layers.

new 030303 release. john heckle s first one for 030303 starts off deliciously with translate- being a moody and melodic and bouncer that caters to a twisted dance floor. terix, the opener on the b-side is a beautiful reminder of derrick mays detroit, rhythm is rhythms kao-tic harmony in particular. the end of this record then, is like the end of most nights: with lots of melodies going on and a stomping rhythm hear me is by far the most mind bending track of this excellent 12inch.

brooklyn s effective weapons return with another useful weapon for your record box, -tear gas- includes four relentless tracks bristling with techno-industrial carnage. dark s&m flavor abounds on the lead track -controversy-, a powerful- slow motion burner with super sleazy samples and ultra-heavy rave sounds. 909 workout techno makes up -dominator- which is based around an extraction from the klinik. the b side includes -bun hope!- and -take a pil- which also edit freely from industrial 80s jams and inject them with the ew flavour.

tidy line-up including randomer, gilbr, voiski and tolouse low trax. tip! in terms of experimental, techno, very few come close to the impact that this uk producer has had on the scene. with a sound that is rarely classifiable, randomer’s dekmantel contribution is a staggered, minimally-twisted, dark, kind-of-two step, awesome thing. versatile records’ gilb’r has found himself an integral part of the dutch scene since moving to amsterdam, and brings forth his organic, percussive grooves that have helped define his music, and label to date. salon des amateurs’ tolouse low trax provides a seasoned session of amniotic, grizzled, hypnotic post-everything music, that is eerily discomforting and wonderfully pleasurable at the same time. and on the ep’s fourth track, parisian techno wizard, voiski adds layered organic, futuristic loops that work to stale the progress of time, and space.

this is a reissue of ‘casioworks’ by gust de meyer, originally released as a cassette on ding dong tapes and records in 1983. this stuff has been making crooked collectors, old and young minimal-wave heads and other music lovers going bonkers for years. at the age of 35, back in 1983, gust de meyer was working as an assistant at the faculty of social sciences of the catholic university of leuven, were he did some groundbreaking work. he got a phd in musical industry and introduced the study of video games.

we got cuthead on rat life number 12. you probably know this guy. he is respected worldwide for his one of a kind house and hip-hop productions. lately he said, he got a bit bored with all the soulful jazzy sampling, the groovy shuffles and the catchy hooklines. so, he decided to do something a little different for rat life records. well, thank you sir! happy to present these five variations of banging sounds!

yandom are not new to the scene. but then again they are. the project has been kicked off by yannick labbe and dominik marz, already renowned producers and djs before they decided to join forces in in january of 2017 with their remix for dekodeko on leipzig-based label ors. yandoms productions are discoid excursions to the dark side a sound spanning from leftfield italo-esque productions to straight up techno-bangers. a sound already loved and played by artists like michael mayer, solomun, kornel kovacs and many more. at the moment, yandom are working on eps following their next release on &nd music (scheduled for september 2017). as djs, yandom deliver an infectious and very musical freestyleapproach, dropping anything from techno to vintage classics and held together by a strong foundation of electronica. a yandom-set is anything but random and yes, they do look as good in reality as on the photos.

a complex web – the story of dive position and the shining path ... began in 1982 when peter miller (aka dr. william s ray – vocals, tapes, guitar) met andrew millar (aka maurice spectograph the nose-y pieman – program execution) in gold coast, australia. while sharing a similar taste in music, they decided to form a band, so dive position was born. equipped with a korg synthesiser and tascam 4-track recorder, they -wanted to have the sound of kraftwerk, the groove of can, and the menace of throbbing gristle-, ending up with -a cross of suicide and the residents-, as peter recalls. in a local record shop they met stig andre leonardson (aka vincent blackshadow), who joined the duo on percussion and drum machine programming. their motto was -now is then-. dive position then became the fatal charm around 1984, and the fatal charm became the shining path who eventually released their only album -basic training manual- in an edition of only 250 copies, most probably in 1986. the band then started to drift apart, and shortly after andrew sadly passed away – this compilation -now is then- comprised of previously unreleased dive position and the shining path material is dedicated to his memory.

superb unreleased 80s ambient cassettes remastered ! robert scott pearsons musiccan be seen as surrealist, impressionist, post industrial, mystical or avant-garde, but it goes beyond categories. his work embraces software, philosophy, poetry, visual arts, and generative algorithmic creation in general. at an early age, he began to experiment in this field, and released his first music privately on cassette, being part of the 80s underground industrial scene in seattle. post-industrial, futuristic, but not really nihilistic, his beautiful music melts expressive synth leads with arpeggios soundscapes, and drum machines flashes and lights, to take us in another reality.

eric maltz is a producer from new york city and now resides in berlin, germany. he is a former employee of halcyon records from its og glory days in it s first location in red hook/carrol gardens areas of brooklyn. -eric provided a sofa to me often through-ought my 20 s and vice-versa, we both cared about music above all else- we lived and breathed music- and we helped each other survive when we were penniless - if one was up, so was the other... eric and i were roommates, friends, we looked out for each other in a rough city with tough rules. every time one of us got a job at a restaurant or record shop, within weeks we would have the other working there too. we did that for a decade. we slang records for years at halcyon- a shop on smith street which had a portrait of stevie wonder painted on the front facade- and we threw parties all around brooklyn back then too.. every shitty bar that would have us lol. we were a dope team. he s the only person who has ever touched the third rail on a subway and survived too! true story. so you know i couldn t wait to release his debut lp. proud of this guy- - levon vincent

the album is a collection of wonderful, emotional and very personal songs. written and performed by peter wangel, the lyrics are inspired by multi award winning, temporary norwegian writer karl ove knausgard and deal with very personal subjects from his own life. “the previous releases were about the “lonely” feelings, the feelings that only existed in me, the feelings i wanted to set free for a long time. the new album is about my life as it is right now, about all the thoughts, expectations, worries and the happiness that comes with a new life as a family. this is a very personal album, but i also hope to express something very ordinary and something that most people can relate to.- also musically the album is a big step forward for wangel, the melodies are still subtle, but offer more nuances and colors.

excise records 2nd vinyl release is a celebration of both northern and southern californian techno. oaklands milkplant has been making heady dancefloor bombs for 2 decades, and los angeles icon developer jumps in with a beautiful retro-hypnotic remix of far star. milkplants dust cloud is a 10 minute epic build with dreamy synth work shattered complex metallic percussion and anchored by a shockingly weighty bassline. the original far star is a wild romp with psyched out synth arps and relentless spit-fire hi hats.

the second chapter in petit singe’s travel through akash ganga comes in the form of four remixes curated by members and friends of the haunter records extended family. they all applied their peculiar agencies and experience to the original recordings. danse noire boss and spiritual explorer aïsha devi combined elements from all the tracks of the album with her own production to assemble “necromedia”, a powerful take on the sidereal source material. haunter veteran weightausend delivers a psycho-dub version of the frantic “oxo”, while zuli (of vent and uiq fame) deconstructs the same track turning into a kind of post-human and post-colonial beat he labeled “astrogangsta”. the final track is an alteration of the album’s finale “27.09.87” by canadian experimenter jesse osborne-lanthier, who let it mutate like a self-sufficent biodigital organism, opening it up for new experiences.

dream control is the collaboration of a legend of the krautrock kosmiche scene and a pioneer of the german electronic scene. zeus b. held, renowned producer (gina x performance and works under his own moniker) and steve schroyder (former member of tangerine dream during their formative period) team up to deliver their debut album -zeitgeber- which celebrates their very own sound and rhythm in a cosmic journey through audio and time. the tracks are a blend of structured compositions and improvisations accented by the throat singing of kolja simon und felix monnich aka alienvoices. the album plays like a technicolor adventure through space with explorations of cosmic disco, dreamlike passages, vocoder lullabies, and space odysseys. zeus b. held began his musical career in 1972 in french progressive art-rock band eruption before joining successful german prog rock group birth control, performing and writing with them 1973 - 1978. he was one of the first musicians to use the sennheiser vocoder vsm 201 in his live sets.

million brazilians formed in portland, oregon in 2006. founding members grant corum and suzanne stone have been central to the band since its inception, while a rotating line-up backs them depending on the latest vision for the sound. tip! the band carry out their own interpretation of a genre bending ethos that has evolved throughout the american underground. drifting between boundless compositions, focused energetic improvisations and experimental collaborations that embrace a weird sort of transcendence. their next installment red rose and obsidian was recorded in maine and engineered by big blood’s caleb mulkerin. both he and the band deliver a powerful yet fragile and personal release. the mythical and evocative recordings are inspired by maine s rugged coastlines, mournful ripples of sound wash up on the shore, whilst a lonesome, at times harrowing saxophone drifts through the rolling mountains, providing unsettling melodic interludes. electronic treatments veil organic sounds, a fleeting whistle meets spontaneously with spacey flutes, mutated rock rhythms are topped off with the soaring vocals of suzanne stone who leads the listeners into the magical world of the million brazilians.
