norwegian duo ost & kjex make a welcome return to crosstown rebels. their private dancer ep is a masterclass in producing dance-floor ready rhythms. they welcome fellow norwegian whalesharkattacks to the mix to provide her dark yet dreamy vocals. we had a fascination with tinas private dancer since first being exposed to it by pat sharp on sky trax in the 80s. whalesharkattacks personifies everything thats cool about the 80s, so when we met her we knew we had to cut a version ost & kjex private dancer is as dark as it is melodic, with eerie drum pads and a medley of dreamt synths. norwegian vocalist whalesharkattacks, whose music has been described as 808 goth, lends a distorted vocal. on nightingale a burdenging bass adds a sense of urgency interlaced with vocals reminiscent of the 80s era. cosmic synths float side by side samples of beautiful bird song. a titillating work of art with a mesmerising beat.

the last time we heard from jex, he was cruising dance floors with his 2015 slapper -studio e- on running back. three years later, jex returns with -bad timin vol. 1,- a four-tracker made for working djs on the newly christened bad timin label. ranging from the scorched-earth acid of -zone phased- to the melancholic deep of -fee wifi,- the ep has something for everyone--well, everyone who likes hanging out at dance clubs, that is!

jexy is getting all up close and personal on his new hi-fi house release. featuring the canadian and singer pal isha d on vocals, -human emotion- is a love song that doubles as a call to disconnect and find real love. netflix and chill? how about just chill! meanwhile, the lounge vibe is strengthened on the sophisticated -botanico,- while on -fifth wind,- jexy channels some trip-jazz with a slow breaks drum pattern. the ep is rounded out by -infinity room,- a melodic groover that should please fans of jex s earlier work. recommended!!

transmitting from new york (via toronto), jex aka jex opolis has so far been known as the man behind and in front of the good timin label. infamous for its boogie burner bombs to quote discogs member kutter karlo jex, trades his label for running back and a shifts the gear. up with the tempo and down with the lights, there still is a variety of styles. studio e is named after an after hours spot in edmonton that the record s author partied at in the early 2000s, also sounds like something ivan smagghe would have enjoyed at that point in time. laxmi tool is referencing classic tribal house and a street in pune, where jex wifes grandma bought the drum used in this track. on the flip, harpa brags and boasts with its trampoline bass line, while la casa surfs some timpani waves.

with a sound that straddles electro, funk, disco and house, oslo based duo ost & kjex return with their second long-player cajun lunch on hamburg based imprint, diynamic. the debut album, to their big surprise awarded them a nomination for best electronica album at the norwegian grammys and the pair continued to develop their sound on releases such as more songs about cheese and revolutionary tarts, how not to be a biscuit and boston food strangler. since then the food boys have awoken, got their hands on some serious sounds and started shredding out tunes aimed at the dance floor.

let s face it, summer in new york city is sweltering. even with all the windows open and fans on high, it is hard to find refuge in alliance upholstery s chinatown offices. today s sweat though, is due to the -dancer on the shore- ep, the latest release by the brooklyn based band, lemonade (cascine/true panther sounds). -dancer- is a subdued summertime collage of steel drums, buoyant electronic pads and windswept vocals. joined by dee dee from dum dum girls, it is a celebration of the space where humans and nature exist in harmony. originally released digitally as a single on cascine in 2015, the band created a dj friendly extended mix for this release. if you have been to the -air a dancer- party over the last few seasons, you have likely already heard it (sometimes twice in one night!).

after the success of most excellent unlimited’s first dj tools collection, a new roster of dance floor masters has convened to open their bag of tricks. theres something for every mood on this eight- track ep, opening appropriately with the one-two disco punch of justin van der volgen’s energetic conga break high in nyc and legendary better days alum bruce forest’s anthemic “street break, with its instantly recognizable brass hook and percussion from brazilian maestro airto moreira. photays j train squeak break builds drama with a minimal afro texture while phil moffa goes the other way with a tribal four-on-the-floor stomper. the flip side continues the diverse directive, as devin dares opening segment demonstrates with a never-issued labelle live session. jex opolis crafts a clever sun palace-esque casio workout and downtown veterans whatever/whatever revisit a much- loved technopop beat before kza takes things out with fitness beats, a sweaty workout that runs through a dozen iconic disco breaks. once again, most excellent breaks, beats & loops lives up to its name with a high-quality collection that proudly extends the lineage of the classic new york city break compilation.

frankfurt based producer, dj and music lover martin heimann presents his debut single salto on carry on 008. remaining faithful to its name, the small label puts out another piece of limited wax every once in a long while. enrooted in the soundscapes of 80s proto house the original version of salto is a thriving piece of octave liberation. consistent changes between harmonics break up the repetitive structure, while fm pads and the 303 are performing a little duet. the release is ennobled by two proper remixes from moon b (peoples potential unlimited) and jex opolis (good timin). while moon b keeps it bubblin’ with some extra analogue funk bounce and subtle italo dance floor energy, the b-side is jexi-fied with some embellishment to the cords, change in the bassline and a nice 808 snap. on top mr. opolis adds some mysterious but cheesy vocals samples that match perfect with the moody 80s orchestral stabs.
