mgmt’s fourth album marks a shift in tactics. abandoning the belabored excess of their last two albums, they opt for streamlined synth-pop.

dj koyote has long been a dab hand at discerning house music. thankfully, his latest offers more of the same. seeing the light of day on his own supergenius records imprint, france n trance sees the french producer perk up with no less than five original cuts, each of which boasts its own inimitable charm. opening up the release is the sounds of the title track. a melancholy effort full of warm, hazy vibes, its skipping, playful ethos is characterised by its twinkling, charming melodies. a smile-inducing track that s sure to prompt delirium on the floor, it gets us underway with some distinction. hey baby sees the producer opt for more uptempo strands. featuring a killer hip hop vocal sample and a series of off-kilter elements, it s a completely different proposition to what s come before - albeit one that emphasises the producer s knack for the unpredictable. just a young thing sees the producer hark bark to vintage chicago times with a jam that could well have been lifted from trax s back catalogue. full of booming kicks, claps and snares, this one plays out like a modern interpretation of a classic armando joint. the quite expertly names ladonna is an exercise is peak-time funk flavours, before business class sees us out the door with another track that suited to the night s most fervent moments. an industrial-tinged track of techno persuasions, it s a hot and heaving effort that s as likely to leave you in a cold sweat as it is reaching for the lasers. there s no doubt about it - koyote s latest is a triumph from the beginning to the end.

the industry of dance music can be as soul-crushing as any other. those thrills and spills of late, loud nights come with a best-before expiry date, after which even the most seasoned selector-producer-scenemaker begins to wrinkle their nose. to have experienced it all over 15+ years and seek to see it unfold again through fresh eyes, what sort of lunatic would willingly put themselves through that? v would. so its a new character, but who was the mysterious v in a past life? make your own conclusions. a little digging will lead you toward the origin story, but sometimes the pleasure comes from the unknowing. opt to enjoy the silence. silence, however, is not the focal point for v. in fact, this new form is a way to discard baggage and revitalise the process of music making.

no matter where the winds may blow, what storms may come or what pirates will do, the transatlantyk ship is still sailing. navigated for the last three years by zambon out of berlin, ultimately avoiding the shallow waters of the generic and constantly patrolling the seas in search of exciting sounds. after all that sailing the label just had to replenish its ranks with some fresh faces - those still capable of voyaging into the unknown. joining the crew is a young gun tamten, who by day serves as a vinyl pusher in warsaw s finest side one record store. what he does by night is not the matter of this short text, but we are sure he does a lot of it. hence his love for all things distant - from subaquatic pads and floating riffs, to new-age-y siren voices, otherworldly effects and percussion drenched in reverb. there is a lot of similarly distant, sun-bleached material on this five tracker, full of a druggy and hippy balearic feel. beautiful ambient jam przebudzenie is the stand out track, but znaki czasu is equally as good with its simple, yet memorable melody, reminding of dawns and sunsets on some god forsaken beach. sultry deepness of nieznajoma is followed by enchanting digital exotica of wyrocznia and wavey trip-hop cut po burzy . overall its one of the strongest eps that transatlantyk managed to co-opt into its growing catalogue. definitely one for the dreamers.

that cyberpunk chameleon of styles, manchester’s pride and dancefloor master ruf dug is back on wax on copenhagen’s music for dreams. following up the first 12” of remixes that came out last year, we once again re-visit the island life of monsieur ruffy and his debut full length album “island” (recorded during a sojourn on guadeloupe). first up we have italians on the mix. hi-jacking ruffy’s tribute to wally badarou, leo mas and fabrice opt to do their own thing: which is churning out a bouncing house belter of their own that bears little resemblance to the original lo-fi synth reverie. closer to the original then, is fellow mancunian andi hanley’s take on the same track. adding sparse percussion and and a simple but effective drum beat, this take seems to simply be an uncovered second half of the original, where it finally takes off for the dancefloor. “mangrove dub” is reworked by fresh-on-the-scene aussie producer tropical hi-fi who creates a brilliant version full of moist ambient textures and reverb-heavy dub treatments. at last but definitely not least, seahawks turns the whimsical hippie folk ballad “le rayon vert” into a more intense and neatly dressed affair, focusing on the instrumental parts and lifting aside vocalist nev cotte’s contribution to the original. still with a mindful of tropical dreams and the ocean shore close at hand, but in a more introvert vini reilly kind of way. essential package.

marathons began innocently, as a quick debut ep by an energetic swedish duo we found on soundcloud. within a couple months of chatting with the pair, artur bra&#776,,ndstrom and egil kahlbom, however, we realized our collaboration wasn t going to be simple, so cut and dry, so straightforward, and that s why we find ourselves here, a year after meeting them with a full album, not an in-and-out single, on our hands. what made it complex and intricate, you ask? why d we opt to squeeze eight originals into one long-player, you wonder? well, artur and egil are prolific dudes with fantastic ears and formidable work ethics. a couple of demos quickly sprouted offspring and became four, then six, then ten. rather than fight the arbitrary desire to trim the spread down to a 12inch, we figured we d aim higher and work on a proper album. what we constructed is, in a very classic sense, a long-player. here s that album! it s a sunny, loose, limber, uninhibited boogie through warm disco cuts and wobbly house jams and soulful funk slices. daytime chill-out with a nightclub architecture—or peak hour mayhem with a bright, clearheaded euphoria. marathons swings every which way and suits any mood, so drop that needle and try it on. then repeat, repeat, repeat.

if *the wanderer* was the record that brought romanthonys obscure blackmale label to a wider dj audience, *testify* was the release that cemented its reputation as one of the labels to check for in the us import section. here are brandnew remixes: jimmy edgar, in true blackmale style, takes romans original chops it in his sampler and lays the results over a thundering distortion tinged beat. it is proper raw jacking business, perfect for small dark rooms with a few hundred sweaty bodies. waifs & strays deliver a brilliant modern update complete with an air-punching sax solo (something that was definitely one of the nails in the deep house coffin the first time round and the kind of thing that could get you shot if you used in the 00s). illyus & barrientos deliver what is arguably their strongest remix to date dropping snips of the original over a quite brilliant bassline groove. ed one & boddenalso opt for some bassline action but add in classic organ stabs and todd edwards style vocal chops to their big-ass bass wobbler. lastly, we have the previously unreleased cd#9 vocal version which as usual, features one of romans deeper, more organic mixes.

the iii rivers juggernaut sets forth once again, release number 4 the charivari ep, putting voiceless in the cockpit and leading the charge. second nature sets a dark, sultry and ominous tone as voiceless deploys a plethora of sounds and moods that resonate with all the tense drama of the labels affiliated club night, bohemian grove.

the sexiest dj duo on wheels steers their way back into the hearts of house music fans everywhere with -what you believe,- a 2-track vinyl-only ep. this sixth installment shows a different side of the duo... here, in contrast to their past vocal collaborations with corbu, gry and bob moses, they opt for a pair of lush dancefloor instrumentals, delivering their most dj-friendly package to date.

russian producer sanys has impressed with a series of raw techno records on his downfall theory label - and his latest release further showcases his talents. dominance starts with atmospheric synth washes before a granular bass and relentless percussion propel it forward. like previous sanys releases however, this is not straightforward linear techno and a rumbling vocal and insistent drums will keep the listener engaged. my concern sees sanys opt for a different approach, with a pulsing bass and a crystalline synth line going up and down the scales, intertwined with a vocal snippet, while told you so features another stylistic shift. on this occasion, it s back to the darker sound that was audible on some of the earlier downfall theory releases. tight, snappy drums and robust, insistent claps provide the basis for a droning, murky bassline that cuts through the arrangement like a lighthouse rays in the dark of night. finally, irish producer eomac, one half of lakker, delivers a version of dominance that centres on lithe broken beats, ghostly melodies and insidious tonal shifts. as its title suggests, dominance shows sanys has become a master of the techno form.

tim heckers masterpiece *mirages*, originally released only on cd in 2004 by alien8 recordings, finally gets a proper double 12 inch vinyl release, remastered and housed in a gatefold sleeve..

hannover based imprint yippiee return with the outstanding come with me ep this august by manuel moreno, backed with remixes from label owners filtertypen and normen hood. this release follows the success of yippiees treibgut sonder kompilation which featured cuts from deepnhouse heavy hitters chris lattner, moritz piske, patlac and gorge to name a few. now the german imprint deliver this four track single from swiss producer manuel moreno whos releases on 8bit and dj sets at space and privilege (ibiza) have earned him a highly praised status in the underground. title track, come with me, opens the release, encompassing a boomy kick drum, tight drum programming and ethereal atmospherics to create a deep and dark distinctive quality. the inclusion of a gritty sub bassline further fuels its murky progressive vibe, while the introduction of a soulful vocal hook and bright string melodies adds a lighter touch to the composition.label owners filtertypen opt for a less is more approach to their remix of come with me. stripping back the atmospherics to a more dismantled state, the duo-apply punchy drums and a warbling sub-bass,resulting in a smooth rolling groove that runs steadily for its duration. the cut comes into fruition threeminutes in when the pair bring in an amalgamation of deep strings, synth shots and delayed fx, finely placedto create an expansive dynamism. hello bernhard employs deep worldly percussion as its driving force, while guitar licks and warm chordscreate undeniably beautiful imagery. moreno demonstrates his ability to manipulate melodies with precisionhere, introducing several elements to play off one another in a call and response fashion. last up on the wax release is im sorry, a solid slice of house built around rolling toms, sawtooth bass notes and trippy vocal murmurs. manuel utilizes heavy delays and big room reverbs to create cavernous effects in the breaks that adds an incredible weight when the preceding groove is brought back in. to close the release normen hood offers up a remix of hello bernhard as a digital bonus. applying deep house tactics, hood plays on warm piano stabs and brass hooks that deviate around the tight-knit drums for several minutes creating an epic rework.

as part of a growingly endangered breed of all vinyl musicologists, l.a.s young adults opt to let the records play in this digital age of instant gratification. the first installment in their commitment to pressed wax platters culls a collection of spectrum exploring body music from cohorts both near and far.

komisch welcomes another new artist to its fold for its last release of 2011.p.god aka paolo dioguardi hails from naples in italy. still in his 20s, he makes music that belies his youth and neptune iv sounds like the work of a veteran producer. lead track approaching an ocean planet sees grainy, dense beats and hypntoic bleeps take the lead, but hovering above the arrangement, tethered to the reverberated, doubled up claps, are ghostly, eerie chords. the title track adopts a similar approach, with bursts of metallic percussion underscoring spacey pads as p.god drops a droning, tunneling rhythm track. finally, geometric shadows on iced surfaces sees the young producer opt for a deeper approach. this time the chords envelop a purring groove, but the same sense of understated menace is still audible thanks to the austere hats and bleak subsonic bass. capturing jeff millss estoeric side and the hypnotic magic of sleeparchive, neptune iv is a real techno journey!

danish duo laid back made a most surprising comeback to the clubs in 2010 with >cocaine cool<. not that they had ever been really forgotten: their electro pop classic >white horse< remained a sure shot in clubs for the thirty years after its release 30 years back and a constant inspiration to boatload of diverse artists from techno to hip-hop. >cocaine cool< was recorded at the same session but the ironic vocals ridiculing label executives blowing up their frail ego with the chemical substance were deemed to risquee at that time, so the recording collected dust in some box until last year. bostons >soul clap< another duo hailed as one of the hotest things in clubland known for their eclectic funk-rooted taste. they opt for a cool sparser arrangement leaving out the “white horse -like chords. a loose, dry electro funk beat, hpynotic one-note synth, few dub effects and additional vocoder vocals do the trick bravorously. besides an instrumental version theres also a harder jacking dub take sounding like early chicago house edits. and while the boys are add it they also re-edited another huge one from laid back: >baker man< that managed the unlikely balancing act of not only hitting it bigtime in the charts but also in the emerging balearic scene. this 12 inch is cool in every which way!

fear of flying regular leif provides the 4th release for fofs revitalised limited label. a supa slick slice of modern vocal house, priority sees leif up his game with supremely tight production, a killa funked up b-line and sensual vocal from new recruit donna lea. for remix duties we opted for the up & coming talents of young un ethyl along with production partner flori. they come up with an altogether different take, coaxing elements of the vocal into a bigger sounding deep house experience. finally we thought we opt for a little bit of a curve ball in the shape of daze maxim. upon hearing dazes installment in the excellent story series we knew he was someone we needed to get on board - here daze strolls into tough tech house territory with a groove slightly reminiscent of rick wade at his most dance floor

another outstanding deep house release from the naked camp with brilliant remixes from andi caldwell, lance desardi and artist/production team fenomenon. their mix actually leads off as a1 and deservedly so. a slick broken beat excursion that uses the full vocal by ernesto and lifts the track to another musical dimension. caldwell and desardi opt for not using the vocal and creating two pumping dubs that fit the naked mood beautifully. desardi turns out a hot deep tech electronic mix that fans of francois k should check out!
