auf dem debütalbum von gloved hands mit dem titel empty terminal verlässt der musiker die tanzfläche auf der suche nach etwas amorphem und weniger greifbarem. die acht tracks des albums haben einen ambienten charakter und konzentrieren sich mehr auf textur, raum und menschliche gefühle als auf die notwendigkeit von konstantem antrieb und schwung.

die a-seite, die rhythmischere und perkussivere der beiden seiten, ist von vagen echos und verwischten, sich langsam bewegenden akkorden durchzogen. unterschwellige trommeln schieben sich in und aus dem fokus. die klangquellen sind gleichzeitig weit entfernt und ganz nah. die vorhänge öffnen sich, um den blick auf eine kristalline melodie oder einen bruchteil einer gesangsphrase freizugeben, dann füllt sich der raum mit duftendem rauch und wird dunkel. es ist ein ort jenseits der tanzfläche. vielleicht ist es ein ort, an dem es überhaupt keine tanzfläche gibt.

die b-seite ist noch zerbrechlicher und durchsichtiger. vorder- und hintergrund sind undeutlich, so dass ein unscharfes geflecht zarter, ineinander verwobener formen und rhythmen übrig bleibt, die im warmen, schwach beleuchteten zwischenraum glitzern und sich gegenseitig berühren. mit einer wirbelnden mischung aus höhlenartigen bässen und süßen, aber niemals zuckersüßen melodien werden die details gedehnt und zu etwas neuem und doch vertrautem abstrahiert. die kompositionen kräuseln sich in der luft, tauchen auf und verschwinden, sind nah und doch unerreichbar.

fantastic voyage’s autumn 2015 release of soul for dancers proved so successful, that we didn’t have to think twice when lois wilson (mojo, record collector) asked if she could do it all over again. it turns out that there were plenty more classic sides in her dj crates, drawing on that rich seam of early soul and proto-soul rhythm & blues, of the sort that would have packed the dancefloors on the sixties club scene, or has been embraced by subsequent generations of club soul diehards.

powder is a young producer raised in rural japan, now living in tokyo. she wakes daily at 6am, squeezes onto a packed subway and commutes to a bland office building where her day is consumed by the electronics industry — a banal world of blank stares, uniforms, data entry and soliciting phone calls. she cherishes her lunch break, a solitary hour of astral projection where her daydreams cull inspiration for another life, her nocturnal routine. at 9pm the day closes, as her co-workers flock to the izakaya for beers, powder rushes to her micro home-studio to exorcize her daily demons, constructing a tropical temple to house her immaculate vision. she slaves away, unabashed until sunrise, when her routine begins again, however, todays lunch break is an escape into her headphones where she will revisit her soundtrack inspired by lights, colors, hometown memories, and the imaginary worlds where the fruits of her labour will live.

you can forgive a band who set out to create something even just a little bit different and get it horrendously wrong, but its tough to have sympathy for a band who shy away from the challenge altogether. such was the case with autokratz on their first album, animal, which, apart from a passable opening track, consisted of a series of bland electronic pastiches Ð dance music that conversely made the listener want to sit and wait it out. that didnt stop the hype building around the duo, though, thanks in no small part to the fact that the album was released through in-vogue french label kitsunŽ music. the confusing positivity surrounding the lp suggesting, perhaps, that style overcomes substance once a record company has received the hipster seal of approval.this time around, however, kitsune has stepped aside, with autokratz releasing the follow-up on their own label, bad life. but has the sense of responsibility that surely comes with this step made them re-evaluate their direction? has it inspired them to inject a much-needed shot of creativity into their work? not a hope. if anything, autokratz descend even further into mediocrity on self help for beginners. once again, their best tunes are loaded towards the front of the album, starting with the lead single, -opposite of love. its far from outstanding, helped in no small part by the terribly contrived lyrics, but does possess a catchy synth melody Ð enough to earn it a place on club playlists, at least. its a similar story with -becoming the wraith, which has peter hook on hand to deliver an overtly new order-esque bassline. beyond that, however, the quality dips dramatically. tracks like -the seventh seal and -r.i.s.e. are typical of the selection on offer, underwhelmingly vapid, derivative tunes which show up a disappointing, but not totally unexpected, scarcity of guile on the part of their creators.where autokratz do excel is as producers Ð a quality evident not only in their own work, but also in their remixes for other artists. unfortunately, this only serves to exacerbate their deficiencies on the other side of the control room desk. ultimately it may mean that, having failed to address the shortcomings of their debut, autokratz will be fated to be filed under -also rans in the annals of music history. thats assuming, of course, that someone out there will actually remember them at all.
