from the darkest corners of the rca vaults we bring you this super rare and wonderful, tripped out cosmic-psych rarity on 45! from 1977 this double-header is an eastern themed, moog driven oddity from the mysteriously monikered kamel oil company. written by the legendary bob azzam, eddie barclay (founder of barclay records) & greek record company owner antoine flamaritis, mustapha is an exotica soaked orchestral monster with choir vocals and string arrangements that only the big boys could call in. this is a serious left-field nugget from the vaults of one of the biggest majors, one ends up thinking - how did this come about?! . on the flip-side we have petrolo en bruto , which is the real gem here, undoubtedly this one will appeal to fans of the far flung reaches of world music and psych, even those of you who dig the various flavours of funk from around the globe. a truly special and unique record here, often sought after by the deepest of the crate diggers and obscure sound searchers on a promo 45, this rare ep now sees a fully legit reissue. made in conjunction with above board distribution and rca this reissue is sourced from their vaults using original materials and remastered and repressed to the highest standard for 2018 and featuring all original 1977 rca label artwork.

drummer and music producer desmond mahoney is another of the unsung heroes of british reggae. born in jamaica, he moved to the uk in 1967 and began his professional career playing drums in a band called young ones from zion. he was a founding member of black slate when the group formed in 1974, played with them through their glory years and after running a sound system in north london for many years, returned to the fold when the group reformed a few years ago. his first foray in music production probably came during a brief period in toronto in 1978, working with a band called the ishan lions, but he was back in the uk in time for black slate’s breakthrough material, which brought them onto ensign in the uk, barclay in france and alligator in the usa. at the same time, he continued to arrange and produce for a number of british reggae artists operating in both the roots and lover’s rock modes, female duo nya & natty’s ‘one love stylee’ seemed to bridge the two styles quite successfully on this greatly sought-after 12-inch, first issued in 1981 on the s&g label, then based at a record shop in bow.

fantastic and incredibly rare afro-disco album from 1978. originally released on the seminal french disco label barclay, this album seamlessly blends elements of african, afrobeat, funk and disco styles, with segments continually morphing and evolving into new tracks. irresistibly funky and percussive, this album’s drumming patterns and melodies grandually hypnotise the listener, with only outbreaks of african chanting breaking up the grooves. the b-side is effectively one long drum track broken down into 7 segments that never drop a beat. this album really takes the listener on a journey to africa, via 1978 new york, and is a real one of a kind. it’s also a samplers dream with no end of complex drum patterns and basslines to recycle.

the droids beamed down to planet earth in the year 1978. yves hayat aka droids, was a young label manager at the seminal french disco label barclay in the seventies. >star peace<, originally released in 1979 is his concept to the classic sci fi movie >star wars< out that year. featuring the french space synth classic >(do you have) the force<, in both parts, this lp goes from strength to strength with spaced out lullabys >inner space< & >tchough fou<, before kicking back into the groove with >be happy< an assault to the senses with its manic synth lines running riot over heavy funk overtones. the flip kicks off with >shanti dance< parts 1 & 2, sleezy robot-funk work outs that are inter-joined to make a 6 minute continually evolving piece of music. the closing eight-and-a-half- minute >renaissance de l amour< is a tour de force of cinematic synthscapes, bleeps, bloops and world rhythms, before dropping in the drums 6 minutes in to ignite any dancefloor. this is light years ahead of its time.
