since so many european labels have been reissuing lost and obscure 1980s japanese ambient albums of late, it was probably inevitable that at least one label would put together a compilation paying tribute to the sound. it turns out that jazzy couscous has won the race with kumo no moko, a superb double album that does a terrific job in putting japan s 80s ambient scene in context. as you d expect, the majority of the tracks feature either dreamy electronic sounds or a mixture of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, with nods to jazz coming thick and fast. there are naturally a couple of fairly well-known names on show, but for the most part the compilers have done a terrific job in highlight lesser-known tracks from unsung heroes.

eureka is one of the most exciting party and house crews in tokyo that works with the theme quality house music never betray . now they re also starting up their own record label with a little help from their close friends over at local talk records. the very first release on eureka! comes from ex bristol producer crackazat who has had multiple releases on local talk, future boogie and z records. with is melodic and jazzy take on house music he s quickly moved up on the underground scene as one of the key producers on today s house scene.

itokim, aka tendo-based producer takuro ito, aligns with dj bone s subject detroit label with the subject japan: rhythm poems ep and his opening gambit certainly leaves a dent. -motechnique- has been a staple of bone s 3 deck attacks in recent months and it will have eyebrows raised and mouths open from the off. weighty but warm kicks start as they mean to go on, bursting with pace and vigour as thrusts and stabs pinprick the brooding chords. the laidback, easy-going connotations of the title to -roll up and shine- are very much the ethos and aesthetic of the production, as a playful, bubbling melody sets a warm and almost sugary tone from the off before being bolstered by a suave melange of full-bodied kick and dexterous percussion. itokim rounds off his first outing on subject detroit with -the mood device-, a to the point groover that melds elements of the previous productions to stunning effect. a genuine builder of a track with a straight and true trajectory, -the mood device- melds innumerable coatings of percussion and synth as stabs are layered and layered again, clotting and coagulating the composition in to one delightfully deep and multidimensional slice of formidable dancefloor composite.
