what can be said about the girl whose greatest friend was the mist? it can be said she was never short of adventure, for each time the mist cleared, it had a new surprise. rabbits and rocking horses came out of hats the size of hills, armies of ants played in marching bands, deer danced, giraffes juggled, elephants tap-danced atop the moon, flowers bloomed in the sky, and stars shone on the ground, because, why cant down be up? with the mist there was always the kind of hocus pocus that twisted itself into a pocus hocus, a shenanigan or a hijinks so high it could not be jinxed, but it had to be jumped. by a fish flown by a boy from out of town. it was enough to make her giddy with happy.

afterlife keeps on going strong! earlier this month they brought us tale of us & vaals monument and that just got a proper remix treatment. no others than stephan bodzin and barnt, two artists, who stand out notably for their unique sound took turns on the original lead track and put their very personal touch on it.

tale of us present a new collaboration with vaal for the sixth release on their afterlife label. three years after they teamed up for -concur- and began to tour together, the trio return with their most anthemic offering yet.

tale & tone channels lee and hoj’s experiences exploring the world’s most sought after party destinations from the magic of hazy sunrises to the dim warehouses of underground’s past. the label acts as a bridge between the diverse environments in which dance music thrives and a showcase of the unique stories told by its sounds and devotées. the storybook ep will chart the tale & tone journey starting with a full vinyl release on july 21 and digital singles to follow. the ep begins with the mystic groove of daso and lutz’s better followed by the caribbean inspired ethereal soundscapes of cornucopia’s letter for poly. all day i dream mainstay lost desert has aligned with amari for the intricately layered, vocal driver hunter, while the revelatory soul of dance spirits wash me clean calls out to the calmer side of the electronic spectrum. the release is capped off with the late night affair of newman’s the sky and earth and in hoj’s own words on tale & tone, -lee and i are great friends and have been talking about starting a new project together for a long time

the next set of the japanese musical tales on hhatri s imprint comes from takecha (aka takeshi fukushima), a producer who has played a part in creating some of the seminal pieces of house music that have originated from japan. his music is characterised by the perfect marriage of experimentation and emotional content. for those that know, takecha s first ep kind of deep released on his own imprint, gwm records, in 1995 is a secret gem among japanese house music collectors. only 100 copies were ever available and it is a subtle reminder of what and how deep house should sound like. takecha provides no less in a tale of shiga four gorgeous tracks that provide some insight into his own creative, albeit humble genius in his approach to producing music. fresh off the press are three previously unreleased tracks with the addition of freak out. released in 1998. tip!

molecules of the legion once again teams up with showbiz of d.i.t.c. for his debut ep “a bronx tale”. while showbiz handles production, molecules administers vocals along with appearances from dres (black sheep) and the legion. both cules and show deliver beats and rhymes as only bronx natives could. they carry on the tradition of dropping gritty neck snapping tracks that was birthed some 40 something years ago in their home town. the legion and d.i.t.c. have given us classics over the last few decades and this latest offering is sure to satisfy the craving of those looking for the real.

lee van dowski makes his debut on the mighty crosstown rebels with three delectably dark soundscapes in the tale of ordinary madness ep. the talented producer delivered a stunning ep for crosstown sub-label rebellion back in 2015 and this follow up exceeds all expectations. the title track is based on a text from charles bukowski’s my madness. opening with brooding intensity it evolves with haunting synths and subtle acid laced over a pitched down male vocal. on the flip the great escape and rapidplatz follow suit advancing with dark, hypnotic layers. french born, zurich based lee van dowski has toured the world many times over, as party of luciano’s vagabundos troupe and as an individual artist. his impressive discography covers labels including wagon repair, cocoon, suara, soma, rekids, bpitch control, ilian tape, and mobilee. this year shows no signs of slowing down with a release for nicole moudaber’s mood followed by this heavy-weight release for crosstown rebels.

receptive visions returns with it’s second release, the trademark sound of milos is apparent on both sides of this 12 inch. a tale of two cities with a distorted 909, acid lines and ravey stabs is pure peak time goodness. while shifting perspective revolves around quirky keys and military style drums.

groove line records follows up the change remix 12” from the summer with the latest instalment of our officially licensed disco remix 12”s. next up are two exceptional disco remixes of the salsoul orchestra classics, “tale of three cities” and “tangerine”, by mike maurro, whose recent the mike maurro peak hour remixes box set has cemented the new york producer’s reputation as one of the most respected disco remixers on the scene right now. side a features “tale of three cities” (mike maurro disco remix), one of the salsoul orchestra’s funkiest cuts, written by bass player ron baker for their debut lp. maurro extends the arrangement to nine minutes, concentrating on the driving beat and rhythm section for the intro, subtly adding the guitar and keyboard parts before the first orchestral bridge at 1m36. stripping back much of the orchestral elements throughout the mix he gives more space to the deftly executed solo guitar and keyboard passages and gives special attention to vincent montana’s vibes, taking the dancer on a beautiful journey through the salsoul sound concluding with an instrumental, ethereal outro. side aa features “tangerine” (mike maurro disco remix), vincent montana’s skillfully rearranged version of the lilting jimmy dorsey pop standard which was the group’s biggest pop hit, also from their debut lp.

tale of 2 cities (or t.o.2.c for short) is the culmination of what was just a whim of an idea from label owners mike & justin. it s the first of its kind for us & anyone who knows anything about kolour ltd should know that we shall leave no stone un-turned on a release of this magnitude. this 14 track, 3x12 vinyl compilation is a smooth journey throughout the realms of deep house, mid-tempo grooves, funk/soul, with an edit (or two) for good measure. disc 1 features the incomparable talents of jimpster (under his franc spangler alias), admin, ugly drums & lady blacktronika, henry wu, and the hue ft. kissy asplund. disc 2 features the fouk boys, frank booker, vincenzo de bull & halve soul, & inkswel. disc 3 features the talents of eddie c, napoleon, sleazy mcqueen & vinyladdicted, patchworks, and leblanc. 3 x lp in a trifold sleeve & poster.
