over 10.000 years ago, after the last ice age, humans began to explore and settle the place now known as scotland. evidence of our ancestors can be found in the various rock carvings, standing stones, tombs and dwellings still scattered throughout the lands today. modern archaeological techniques can offer ever more detailed suggestions as to what these monuments might have meant, but it is still largely left to our imaginations to discern just what these spaces were used for.

valcrond video, the label run by sound and image artist luke wyatt (torn hawk), apresents vv-013 russos *wild metals*. russo (ari russo) is an nyc based multi-artist whose engagement with abandoned media finds an outlet in the video bursts he culls as officefern. as a programmer, he has produced innovative music generation tools such as the diamond arpeggiator. he returns to his own music with this collection of challenging and transporting structures. wyatt and vv are eager to endorse russos latest report on crossmodal perception, a true exercise in synesthesia. *wild metals* sounds like ferns and orchids infiltrating a tableaux of black plastic electronics, the breed of black plastic that russo and wyatt both found sinisterly inserted into the grid of their childhood. it provided the skin for some of their favorite toys, and its general resonance was aligned with the fast cars, women, and architecture that dominated their imaginations.

played by sebo k, karotte... layo and bushwacka! are equally at home turning out summery housey affairs as they are peak time stormers, and >now is the time / the time was then definitely fits into the latter category. a double header, the loose concept behind the release is to represent the sound of the dancefloor now versus the sound from a few years ago. >now is the time< has its feet placed firmly in 2008 - a crisp, clean techno bassline, topped by hand claps, snatches of breathy female vocal, and full of an irresistible array rattles, whooshes and other indefinable sounds that the duo seem to pull from the depths of their imaginations. it breaks with some simple electronic sounding chords and a stirring martin luther king sample that makes this record so memorable. >the time was then< is based around that same sample, but gives a cheeky nod to a few years back, with a bassline and keys that wouldnt have sounded out of place on their seminal ‘night works’ album. it never goes too far towards nostalgia, though, and either would rip up a late night dancefloor

>this mix was the perfect chance to sit down with pinch & bring together a sonic which we both feel we have been working towards for a while, albeit from very different angles. in my opinion the dance music climate in the uk is enjoying a healthy & extremely interesting transitional period one which i would draw parallels to the 93/94 proto era when people were literally making up the rules as they went along. this mix is a ode to that time & our attempt at throwing some ideas out there, with the hope of sparking some imaginations & pushing things further forward< - mumdance
