masaki messaged blueberry records soundcloud and signed an ep within a week. i guess sending demos is still a thing. the concept of the ep is to demonstrate all the colors in masaki s rainbow. a truly gifted studio engineer, there are many styles in which he moves across the mixing board. ark and blessing are pure sound design ticklers. as if he decided to make an updated blue-ray instructional soundtrack. soaring melodies and sub bass anchors the listener is literally pinned done by the pressure and beaten with an ugly beauty unique to masakis style. dolci and ilah both radiate on the dance floor like lost dark rollers from an updated mid 90 s estelia and fraewnuil demonstrate the beautiful thoughtfulness masaki also possesses. like a hidden runout groove, masaki leaves the listener pensive and wrapped in a warm embrace.

in 1999, the duo of dj t-rock & squashy nice formed in atlanta. squashy nice is an accomplished beats producer, and dj t-rock is a scratch-master responsible for battle records on the likes of bomb hip-hop records, stereo-type, and replicant music trading corp. together they released three party-ready instrumental hip hop albums for new zealand’s why records label. now based from coast-to-coast (squashy nice in new york and dj t-rock in los angeles), the duo has joined the cold busted family for their fourth album, the satisfying seventeen track back to the essence. showcasing the variety and breadth that squashy nices beats and samples and dj t-rocks scratches can provide, the tracks on back to the essence swerve from party rockers to soulful, thoughtful numbers featuring vocals from new zealand vocalist miss glue. among the standouts are the opening hit the breaks, combining harmonica, 60s style fuzz guitar, heavy beats, and some crucial vocal scratches, let them be, with miss glues lovely vocals providing a counterpoint to acoustic guitar cut-ups, and watch the clouds, featuring gentle piano, a loungey string section breakdown, and wistful vocals from squashy nice. back to the essence should be ingested whole, as its plentiful tracks radiate fun, funk, and good vibes. its like a virtual block party dropping down wherever its cuts are playing.

• umek reprises his zeta reticula moniker for a welcome return to billy nasty’s electrix label with an innovative ep comprised of 4 new tracks, split between the two spheres of electro and techno. the slovenian-born dj and producer should need no introduction, boasting more than two decades of experience, playing the world over, producing music for labels like toolroom, spinnin’, great stuff, intec or his own imprint, 1605 to name just a few, or presenting his hugely popular weekly radio show, behind the iron curtain. it’s been some time since a zeta reticula release on electrix, with ‘ep 1’ to ‘ep 4’ surfacing on the label between 2000 and 2003, although umek has continued the project more recently with tracks on 1605. the a-side of ‘ep 5’ delivers some electro flavour, opening with the serious electro-funk of ‘electric blood complete’, before the vintage sci-fi electronics and playful rave stabs of ‘euphonious’. over on the b-side the techno takes over with the deep and dub-drenched ‘encroach’ followed by the tough housey grooves of ‘radiate’ to complete this bold package.

benales opens the e.p. with radiate, a track where you can clearly hear his influences of the american school of 90s minimal techno. long time dj but new on the production side, this is benales first effort on vinyl. after his initial masterpiece on knotweed records (kw006) and a handful of releases on demented (hiss 1992) and krill, opuswerk is back on knotweed with displacement, a trippy, hard hitting, analogic techno attack: no concession on this one! gonzalo md has already delivered the goods on both knotweed (kw004 and kw011) and decision making theory (dmt 006), as well as a fantastic ep recently on extrasolar. here, with sharp oscillation, he keeps developing his unique style, producing a highly percussive, almost samba-like, piece of techno. label owner philippe petit closes the e.p. with indian summer, a track moving along a warm bassline, bearing some recognisable krautrock influences.

contemplative, but never melancholic, rather with a positive mood, the tracks diffuse an overwhelming lightness and radiate a lighthearted happiness, which are manifested on an incredibly emotional and spiritual level. with the simple and classic black and white artwork the two releases from sahraoui balance eachother like yin und and yang. the second part of the eternal life ep has a very different background than the first ep. it is the white yang of these two natural opposites, contrary forces that are interconnected and interdependent. the record is significantly calmer, less clubby and references the beginnings of the detroit sound

2014 repress !! we think we do not have to introduce sven weisemann, but for all of you who are not familiar with his work... sven has released on top labels such as delsin, smallfish, echocord, liebe detail and maybe the label he is mostly associated with is mojuba records, which is based in berlin. his release for telrae starts with elapse a track so detached from everything and at the same time so earthly, it gains that mystic touch some trax radiate. it is again a timeless track on telrae what we think is a quality we strive for. light sway seems harder at first but turns out to be more melodic and light than elapse and so the title fits it just right!
