reissue - miraculously rare and seriously obscure killer dubs. one of the very few hard core seventies dub albums mixed by errol brown. a selection of solid dubs originally recorded in 1978 by bb seaton at duke reid s legendary treasure isle studio and mixed in-house by the duke s nephew errol brown. a radical departure for all concerned this bold dub album was never officially released although a few clandestine copies reputedly did the new york rounds at the time. mojo by david katz - extremely rare 1978 dub album stands up against any from that era - -errol brown began engineering through family connections, producer duke reid was his uncle. trained by the highly-skilled byron smith, chief engineer at reid s treasure isle facility, brown cut his teeth mixing alton ellis, the paragons, peter tosh and marcia griffiths. -orthodox dub- dates from 1978 when bb seaton of the gaylads was working closely with brown at treasure isle, cutting tracks with ken boothe and mikey dread along with self-produced work, and although only ever issued in tiny numbers as pre-release lp in the bronx, these dubs pack a mighty punch, easily on par with any of the dub sets issued in the era by channel one or joe gibbs. outstanding tracks include -roots rockas-, a stripped down cut of boothe s -who really cares-, and -black forest rock-, a bass-heavy reading of seaton s -is life-.-

on pair, his 2nd album and released on brussels outernational label rebel up records, he has worked hard to enhance his special formula. inspired by the cruel death his nephew, it became a testament against oppression via the mixed sounds of afro boogie, disco, funk, afrohouse, coupˇ dˇcalˇ and kuduro, with english and portuguese lyrics.

black ivory was the pride of harlem and new yorks answer to the philly-fine delfonics but with infinitely more teen sex appeal. this silky-smooth 70s harmony trio featured the fabulous falsetto lead of leroy burgess (nephew of philly soul legend, thom bell) and charted four top-40 r&b singles and two top-30 lps under the guiding hand of their manager and today records driving force, patrick adams. songs like, you and i, time is love and dont turn around (which they performed live on soul train) are acknowledged sweet soul classics. and as the decade progressed and tastes changed, they successfully conquered the disco dancefloors with fave-raves like, mainline and walking downtown (saturday night) for buddah records which were liberally sampled by the hip-hop generation a true testament to the staying power of their incessantly soulful sound.

imagine a collab between cabaret voltaire and eric copeland mixed by the scientist and you’ll start to enter the sphere of robin asselman. all spectrums explored. the off kilter dub waltz of ’16-16’ stutters into view with a heavy and heady rolling dread, whilst inaudible vocal snippets and flatlining synth lines echo and enforce a melee of repetition and danger. ‘fitness talk’ perhaps best showcases assel’s interest in dubwise production techniques, and his ability to soak up a palette of sound and turn it into something truly his own. soft familiar bass pads provide the backbone here for all out sample mayhem, a space where recognisable dub effects and sonars vibe alongside absolutely unsettling outer samples of jarring vocals and inaudible upset, purposefully mixed to jolt ears into unfamiliar territories. being the nephew of dj marcelle, this experimental approach and inspiring concept of pushing samples to the absolute limits of their origin to create a new unexplored path is clearly something that has been fed down from marcelle to robin throughout his youth....

release number 4 for pleasure unit, sees the debut release from lunar concept edgar moon and nephew junior. a wonky slice of stringy afro house backed with two remixes, one from label mates les crocodiles taking it on a slow trip up river.

nail provides the lead track for fofs latest vinyl only excursion - originally produced in the same time period as the classic tracks on the ode rammel reissue ep earlier in the year, glazed lay dormant on one of nails dats for many years before being rediscovered and given its first airing now on fof. chunky roughed up house beats are the order of the day here, a real peak time groove. new talent harry mccanna, resident at londons infamous undersound nights, debuts with act 1, a beautifully subtle bassline driven groove that rises above the pack with its super warm pad lending the track a warm and fuzzy hypnotic edge. romanian talent zece kicks off the flipside with the most contemporary offering, a breakbeat laden groove with a fx laden vocal snatch underpinned by that all important b-line whilst sonodab rounds things off with a beautifully deep and melodic slice of electro on brown study, the percussive elements giving rise to a hazy melodic pattern for those early hour excursions.

what began with a long running glaswegian club night called wrong island has turned into a london-based label of the same name. launching in impressive fashion with some auspicious analogue fetishism from m o o n (aka jimmy murphys nephew) wrong island demonstrate their approach will be a diverse one with a second 12 inch that features their own remixes of helium robots and ghanaian-austrian singer, anbuley.

the flames still burn white hot on friedas musics first record. this seems to be no reason not to throw more explosives on top. with the elephant carousel ep the second label maker don ramon inspires a dance carousel that makes even the most peaceful pachyderms on friedas soil rotate. all four tracks are infectious to body and soul. each for itself an original. all four tracks extensively tested on the party crowd by aunt friedas nephew. rather in a club night or at a funny after hour- hands were in the air and the corner of the mouths were rising high. a very special delight for the friends of the upper class reduction surely is the argenis britos remix of the track wild goats. all in all definitely an ep that streches the trunk in the sky!

big with:laurent garnier, johnny d, hanne & lore, ante perry, sebastian lutz,.. family stuff is a collaboration between prodigal belgian producer kolombo and his nephew nicolas houart. nicolas always was an admirer of his nephews djing and production skills and so it was only logical that he would follow in his footsteps. lany recordings is very happy to provide the platform for the first outing of their collaborative studio efforts. with this first e.p. they prove they can handle both smoother and rougher versions of their house and tech house vision, while maintaining their own sound throughout the 4 tracks. i am has been killing dancefloors in belgium for a while in the many sets of label a&r maxim lany and kicks off the e.p.

bristol-born and london-based producer rekordah takes charge of lo fi funk records second instalment. as well as running the independent label pollen, rekordah also promotes a series of parties of the same name with efa (which have hosted artists of the caliber of mike slott and slugabed among others), and crafts his own brand of cosmic, dismembered hip hop, in that wonky style everyone is raving about.
>cherry coke< on the a side, is full of bubbling sounds that evoke the soda drink your nephew drinks while he plays with that atari you found in the attic, played over a dilla style beat, whilst in the flip side we find >butternut<, in which p-funk synthesisers rise side to side with space age special effects, frantic syncopated drums and 22nd century boom bap.

giovanni limongelli aka limo is the man behind the second release on progcity deep trax. the boots heel ep contains 2 tracks: while martina is a wicked deep anthem, dedicated to limos young nephew, boot beat on the flipside is a pure minimal mixture of basses and beats which slowly builds up to a high drama with layers of hazy pads

mario fabriani joins forces with his long lost nephew fabio bacchini for a discofied romp on fetish. fabriani kicks things off with amore a driving dancefloor jam with sassy diva vocals and tough filtered bassline. a2 good god almighty makes use of a wicked sample and catchy vocal hook for some more peaktime party action. flip for fabios caribbean soul, a latin disco number reminiscent of some late 90s defected/soulfuric output and incredibly effective. lastly is moonshine another trademark bacchini samplefest, complete with disco bubbles, classic 70s strings and an abundant use of filters in all the right places.
