cgi records is extremely proud to be presenting the new ep from oakland via-bermuda based artist russell e.l. butler. i m dropping out of life are 4 cuts of essentialist dance music that can provide an ecstatic escape from the drudges of professional life for all who so rightly seek it. as russell himself elaborates, the title has been on my mind a lot, since i almost lost my life in the ghost ship fire and watched as many of my friends lost theirs. i came up with the title several months ago, in fact 2 of the tracks were shopped in a producer s group that johnny (nackt) and chelsea (cherushii) were a part of, both of whom i lost in the fire. this release is about a commitment to life. the life that i refer to dropping out of, is a life where dreams are put on hold, where concessions are made in order to just survive. but that comes at a cost, one that is far too great for me to pay at this point. i wrote this poem, it ll come as an insert with the record.

tennessee techno: alex falk brings the sound in purified form. his approach has already piqued the interest of many influential djs and producers, and the track *ptr* from his debut ep on proper trax is among the selections included on hessle audio co-founder pangaeas fabriclive 73 mix. falks previous releases have focused on punishing, pulsing, synthetic techno. for his cgi ep, we are treated to another side of falks sound as he allows a bit more house into the mix. limited to 400 copies.

ashville residents oliver dodd & grey people team up for two cuts of razor sharp acid. oliver released his first record on acacia in 1995 and runs the konstructure imprint while grey peoples work can be found on cgi, proper trax, mystical disco and cult trip. both tracks were recorded 100% live. this record launches clear, a new label based in chicago dedicated to releasing subterranean electronic music from between the coasts.

jack roland pulls apart the control mechanisms of the club environment and the way this living and breathing installation can be a tool of elevation or suppression. using club sounds as instruments for this idea, control / applications is a split release born out of amsterdam s warehouse scene, fusing together electro matrix rhythms, idm, with warped hums and breaks used by dancers and performers heading up the rave. with a track on our future works iii comp last year, this is his debut record on the label: a release challenging superstructures buried among the sweat particles of the floor.

ryan parks is a mixed media artist, music producer/performer, and ceo/founder of critically robust cassette tape label, harsh riddims. he was born in college park, ga and grew up skating all around atlanta, soaking up the dense kaleidoscopic cultural ooze found both in and outside the perimeter of atlanta. aside from his visual practice which usually takes shape as mixed media (jacob lawrence/matisse inspired in my opinion!) collage, he has been releasing music as fit of body for seven years. fit of body crafts soulful house ballads that draw on freestyle, bell hooks, old school detroit techno, jazz, and southern rap passed through a no wave paradigm. fit of body has previously released work on cgi, dka, ransom note, and his own label, harsh riddims. “black box no cops” is fit of body’s debut 2mr release, named for atlanta hallowed skate grounds, black box. the vinyl release includes a download code.

next up for rhythm sections club focused sub-label international black 004 is here and it is bringing the heat - this time from tennessee, usa. mister saturday night and cgi affiliate alex falk delivers a 4 track ep made with one thing in mind the dancefloor. taking influence from the likes chevel, levon, redshape and phase, alex falk achieves a singular vision merging american and european styles of techno. opening with upp, an effortless techno groove with a tight rolling bass line, classic lead stabs that pulsate, twist and turn as the heavy kick punishes the subs. beta comes in next with a serious low end bounce a distorted bass bump pushes the system to the max before being followed up by lower sub all swinging around a fat house kick and tight percussion another club stomper for the serious rigs only. the b side is a proper dub techno workout.

having honed his sound on a string of feted self-released cassettes released on his own harsh riddims label - which has also put out everything from bizarro hip hop to gleaming synth pop - and dropped a hyped 12” released on the cgi imprint, the healthcare ep finds fit of body delivering his most accomplished work to date. five woozy original tracks jammed out on second hand drum machines, bass guitar, cheap mics and creaking synths, this is techno as it was first imagined, raw machine soul made for strange times and unknown futures.

c powers was raised in atlanta, georgia, usa. he lives in savannah, georgia. he is resident dj for performance art drag collective house of gunt. he has also been resident dj at clubnights cape fear in savannah, hunger in atlanta and no pain in pop in london. he works in a library and is cat dad to peppers, bucchi, and baby d. his releases include the oysters ep for proper trax in 2015 and the up neck ep for cgi records in 2014. he produced the single crow for the group 18+ (from their album trust) as well as songs on their album collect. fitness check shows c powers s experience as a dj as well as his growth as a producer. from the drum programs to the arrangements, it s obvious that the ep was written and produced by someone who can work a dancefloor. on wysh, which he says is an exit reaction to morose and morbid- techno, subliminal speech and warped vocal stabs transition from centered to alert. on fresco he dices and scatters a song over loops of itself, a technique he calls -a grey area between sampling and editing,i break it up into bits, resequence that shit then stuff that shit back into the track.js may get even more service from the wysh key beats and fresco beatapella versions, which give jacking rhythm tracks and sub-bass extra room to do their thing. the heavily dubbed ask less kick beats, lighter on drums but with a booming bassline, may prove useful as a set-opener or closer. the ep has been mastered for club play by helmut erler at dubplates & mastering, berlin.

the 1978 record, which goes for up to $800 on the collectors market, comes with a lore all its own. the liner notes explain that at the time of its recording, davis was suffering from personal turmoil and a head full of memories from the vietnam war. the infamous jonestown, guyana mass murder occurred two days before the recording session and weighed heavily on his consciousness. the resulting electronic score would garner attention from legendary motor city dj electrifying mojo. in the early 80s, davis performed as 3070 in cybotron alongside juan atkins, laying the groundwork for detroit techno and electro with cuts like alleys of your mind. despite successful cybotron albums released on fantasy records, davis spent time penniless and abandoned in a v.a. hospital. the new 12inch version of methane sea was cut to lacquer straight from the original master tapes. davis currently lives in ypsilanti, michigan and works with music videos, fractal designs and cgi.
