repress !! safe trip is taking one final deep dive into the warm waters of italian dream house with welcome to paradise volume 3, the concluding chapter in the label’s journey through the previously overlooked world of one of dance music’s most vibrant and influential underground movements. . while the influence of dream house continues to echo through the ages, the style was at its peak between 1989 and ’94, when producers across italy delivered a high volume of loved-up, wavy and occasionally blissful productions that fused contemporary deep house tropes – most notably from chicago, new york and new jersey – with elements borrowed from ambient, jazz and balearica.

love not sex is the second stubb 12inch from paper recordings ben davis. the original is a melancholic slice of sunshine that draws inspiration from mor and blue-eyed soul with a hefty dose of balearica. acoustic guitars, rhodes, live drums and strings plus crazy ps tim davis on bass provide the perfect cinematic backdrop for the plaintive vocals of huw costin (torn sail) and rachel foster. japanese edit hero mori ra delivers his first ever remix and its a doozy. keeping the bones of the original track, he takes it in to dark psychedelic waters with the help of former_airline s tripped out guitar. a spoken vocal tips it in to full balearic wonkiness that will have the likes of dj harvey and bjorn torske getting hot under their disco beards. bergen s leca employs his trademark stripped back crisp production for a warm, dreamy remix. steel guitar, clicks, whirrs and a nordic playfulness make for a cosmic journey in to the northern lights. the 12inch will be a limited run of 300, screen printed in west yorkshire by the egg factory with artwork by artist rachel johns in a project that celebrates community and collectivism.

earthboogie’s debut album, human call, rightly earned praise on its release earlier in the year, with listeners responding positively to its sticky and humid dancefloor fusions of african and south american rhythms, chunky dub disco, retro-futurist house, spacey analogue electronics and sun-kissed balearica. hot on the heels of that release, leng records has sourced new remixes of two album highlights – “high minded man” and “silken moon” – from running back label boss gerd janson and synthesizer-wielding balearic boogie stalwart pete herbert.

hemingway s debut ep on cosmic resonance records is a musical memoir. the sounds you’ll hear are drawn from projects created as far back as 2011 and as recently as 2017. the music has evolved over the years, from yacht-funk playfulness to the exploration of cosmic jazz. one constant throughout, though, has been a reverence and love for the dance floor and dance music culture. to bring this broad spectrum of musical creativity together, hemingway enlisted the help of his longtime friend (and now label-mate), chris evans, to weave improvised guitar unicorns (guitarnicorns) throughout. the result is an album that fuses jazz, funk, disco, balearica, pysch-rock and amazonian spirituality into a cosmically resonant vibe.

danish composer the swan and the lake is at it again with his trademark widescreen soundscapes wrapped around eight new tracks of exquisite scandinavian balearica. with the release of his first album -moments- last year on copenhagen’s music for dreams, we were introduced to a unique artistic vision. with one foot in the ambient chill out spectrum and the other in everything from classical avantgarde, idm and jazz, the music of emil svane breum under his alias the swan and the lake is both very accessible yet complex. on his new album -clouds- we see him expand on those same ideas and with seemingly simple means achieve extraordinary strong emotions. opening side a, the jazzy intro of -fresh food- leads us into a sublime piece of hazy ambient groover that could easily be mistaken for a lost 80s production from japan. -clouds over Østerbro- keeps things playfully cool and adds elements of scat singing and xylophones, layered over breum’s shimmering bright chords. while the title suggests we are still on danish soil, this feels like a five minute vacation to a tropical paradise. guitarist johan liepstack makes a guest appearance on -summer in december- which comes off as an understated anthem that could break out into euphoria at any second, but manages to stay in a sombre state all the way through. on the track -plastic pacific ocean remake- we are visited once more by airy vangelis-like vocals which assume the role of a nurturing angel, guiding us to a comforting state of relaxation and healing, as breum lays down an overwhelmingly beautiful synth serenade with chords that hit you right at the core of your most vulnerable state. flip over for the mallorca inspired track -port d andratx- which comes in two versions - part 1 (sun) shines like a perfect escape into that cafe del mar/ hostal la torre sunset while the more deep and melancholic part 2 is aptly named rain. the gentle trickling of -waterfalls- sees breum mimic the eternal cycle of water, creating an organic and ethereal composition that stretches out seemingly without beginning or end. and finally on -heaven’s voice- we see breum in his most epic and emotional mood, as he steers us through a slow explosive force of cinematic sounds. it all ends with a heartfelt spoken word contribution by guest vocalist neonbi.

ubers latest offering is a sublime 5 track ep from french producer shelter. sailing on a black sea is a drifting piece of ambient electronica. late night stargazing on the deck with the waves gently lapping on the shore. sad beach continues with the layered textures with a little more of a percussive feel. through the desert land is shimmering mesmerising journey through the dunes with loose congas soft guitars and a hypnotic jews harp. seaport theme continues the coastal vibrations but with a touch of bounce and uplifting choral vocal stabs and louche pads. finally water plain closes the journey with kalimbas and xylophonic melodies and the contining theme of phosphoescent seas and soothing synth sounds. a very accopmlished slice of beach bar balearica destined for sunsets around the med for years to come.

the multi-talented osaka based dj, blogger, & re-editor mori ra (magic wand, rotating souls records, forest jams records) once again teams up with his former production partner asn after their fantastic release on macadam mambo. two stunning tracks from the pair and 2 more wonders from mori himself make this an unmissable ep. a passport to paradise is just what this ep is, an ice and a slice of funk, disco, balearica, and rare grooves for this summer s floors.

those familiar with the world of dub disco and modern balearica should know all about layne fox, a san francisco-based producer who has released some killer records over the last decade as part of noted collective 40 thieves. the bay area ensemble has been responsible for some killer records, including gems on rong music and leng, who released their expansive debut album the sky is yours back in 2014. now, fox has decided to go it alone for an outing on magic feet that marks his first solo outing since 2005 s move me under the tuffy alias. its something of a gem, too, effortlessly combining many of his familiar influences with nods towards druggy italo-disco and horizontal pop.

what happens when you take a track by a british power trio heavily influenced by blues and psychedelia, and get a master of wayward, left-of-centre balearica to remix it? that’s the premise behind claremont 56’s latest vinyl outing, which features magic feet recordings boss craig bratley delivering a pair of druggy, spaced-out interpretations of “better man”, one of the more laidback outings from fast-rising rock combo bella figura.

the artist occasionally known as simon rufdug mcruff al-duggleston steps up to the collectable porn wax series with two lustful, lingering looks at 80s electronica. sorta rican is all soft skanks and twinkling keys. think ace of bass but with added balearica. mv look , meanwhile, is a psychedelic storm where bold blasts of synths overlap like crashing waves on a new beat shore. mesmerising and masterful, ruf dug is one smooth operator.

little do people know that coober pedy is an opal rich town buried deep within the red and arid outback of south australia. lewie day (aka tornado wallace) and tom moore may be from melbourne, but the duo make up the coober pedy university band, coining the term krautback to describe this moon plain ep. drawing upon italo synths and mid-tempo balearica as inspiration, the first release comes in 10 form via soft rocks kinfolk label. the reverb washed australian crooner chet faker appears on the title track moon plain alongside heavy struck piano chords, while sentenced beyond the seas is a flow of groggy atmospheres and downtempo beats. oblong is the the eps stand out italo track with short bass arpeggios a highlight, while soft rocks acperience mix of moon plain takes on an acidic and space western theme.

is it balearic continue a very fine run of form, with another essential 12 from newcomer aihki, featuring a great rework from canadas hottest disco export eddie c! aihki is a helsinki based duo consisting of magnus blomkvist & tuomas soppela. tuomas and magnus met one dark day at the local zoo engaging in some reindeer spotting. both magnus and tuomas had an enormous love for reindeers and folk music so they decided to form aihki. after extensive crate digging and an endless amount of guitar lessons their first ep was ready. inspired by the bright summer nights and the equally dark winters in the nordic region the sound differs a bit from the traditional balearica. besides aihki, tuomas has the estupido machine and magnus run the nerd network club nights in helsinki. another fine package from iib!
