berlin based techno titan frank muller adopts his beroshima alias for a new four track ep that is already been hailed by the likes of marcel dettman and laurent garnier. first emerging in the nineties, muller has since become a techno great who has played from asia to south america and beyond. he’s had plenty of underground hits on the likes of cocoon and soma, and held some key residencies over the years. always one to command your attention with his multi layered grooves, this ep features an old juan atkins sample “buy some shit from detroit” that has been part of beroshima’s live sets for years. excellent opener ‘encounter’ reflects a recent idea jeff mills and muller had to produce tracks together for a not yet produced sci-fi movie. it is an eight-minute astral techno trip with smooth, driving drums and plenty of intergalactic synth lines. ‘the passion of lovers’ transfers the organic beroshima style into 2018 and shows off frank’s passion for spaced out electronica. it’s a brilliantly bumping cut with lithe synths and melodies adding that soul and colour as it races through the galaxies. the iconic ‘buy some’ with the atkins sample then surges into the future with icy hi hats dancing over rubbery drums. the warped synths take the lead and bring a real sense of off kilter energy to this most timeless bit of techno. last of all is the fantastic space mix of ‘encounter’ which is dreamy and cinematic with exquisite keys and pads colouring in a huge night sky as the drums drive things along. this is an archetypal techno ep filled with cosmic colours and serene emotions.

two of dance musics hottest producers coalesce on the latest hot creations release. frank storm and matteo spedicati bring us gimme tha honey, a throbbing three-track ep that gifts us with a rework from robsoul label boss phil weeks. frank storm reveals -this is our first collaboration which was born a year ago in our studio in barcelona. we share the same passion for our own definition of the ghetto sound, blending fresh and techy vibes.” with this inspiration they weave an almost menacing vocal into the pulsating bassline of lead track gimme tha honey. the phil weeks remix brings a slither of light with a shower of synths and warm, bubbling bass. the ep closes with the long wait shaking the record into heavier terrain, as the industrial keys are underpinned by a flurry of tough drums. frank storm has been a key player on the white isle having played at some of the island’s biggest clubs, space, sankey’s, pacha, ministry of sound and zoo project, as well holding down a residency at the night unusual suspects. matteo spedicati began releasing music in 2006 and has received support from ricardo villalobos and richie hawtin. since then he’s gone on to work with such high profile names as joseph capriati and mendo, as well as releasing records on an abundance of top labels.

the best r&b songwriter and soul singer that most people have never heard of, sam dees has written songs for countless artists, including gladys knight, aretha franklin, whitney houston, george benson, the temptations, teddy pendergrass, millie jackson, jackie wilson, the manhattans, regina belle, kc & the sunshine band, willie clayton, and many others. he’s also a pretty fine singer, having recorded for the chess, atlantic, polydor, and sss labels, and he had a nice string of his own hits in the 1970s.
his 1975 atlantic album “the show must go on” has long been regarded by southern soul aficionados as one of the best of the genre. sounding a bit like a deeper-voiced curtis mayfield (in both style and theme), dees sings with assurance, wisdom, passion, and a whole lot of soul here. songs like “child of the streets”, “troubled child”, & “what’s it gonna be”, share mayfield’s commitment to social commentary, and dees knows his way around a love song, too.

a bunch of bubbling uk deep house players line up on introducing newington, a new label of the same name that is clearly fond of the n16 postcode with vocal house on the menu. ejeca, the irishman earmarked as the next bicep, keeps up his relentless form this year with the opening track robodrum which is a playful shuffling little house number that rotates between stabbing vocal samples and piercing chords. moving south of the irish border, dublin based frank b kills it with trieste a wonderfully warp cut that sounds like it has been recovered from a dust filled dat tape. london types jack fell down take a cleaner, but no less infectious approach on for you whilst midlands type tom flynn rounds it out with the deep and bouncy going on.
