since 87 a 13 year old jan svensson aka villa abo has been the back bone of swedish electronic experimentalist group frak and behind one of the biggest inspirations for butter sessions, borft records. as always, jan keeps pushing the boundaries on this 4 tracker. kicking it off, just a 309 is a stripped-back rough and ready house track in true 90 s borft style. on mission just pam pom we are blasted with space zaps and bizzaro chords melted together with an irresistible beat and sfx from tomorrow. the weird-o-meter is stepped up a few notches on the b side with the sluggish yet hypnotic burn on separated together . a bonus collaborative effort on pony-flute by jan and another frak member duo j encapsulates us with a dramatic introduction of flute like synths and dark atmospheres taking us into the underworld..

the one-two kick drum beat that starts “in the dark of the night” functions as a bit of a tease. instead of merely establishing the languid pace of the track, it has the power of suggestion, and its stark nakedness raises the question of what will happen after the music fully launches. a few seconds later, a punch-drunk, flanging keyboard is the first clue that the listener is in for an off-kilter ride, the sauntering bassline that next appears adds a springy, funk bounce. but it’s the tripped-out, multi-tracked vocals of fernando miranda rios, aka michoacan, the producer behind this slow reveal, that give the song its peculiar, space-yvibe. it’s like david byrne with funk aspirations and a vaguely cosmic feel. the b-side remix, courtesy of italy’s clap rules, feels like more of a re-build. the song has been taken apart and put back together with brand new parts. instead of more relaxed, dazed funk at the core, it’s a glittery, disco-ball splattered track with glossy keys all around.

after the first release by label head honcho boriqua tribez on his new platform for ultra funky rolling techno productions, basics is back with the new hit release by no other than carl falk! the a-side starts off with sender, a dark percussion and bass driven techno track the way we like it! on the flip we find the track disco crusher, the name says it all, a futuristic funking filter disco techno banger. this ep is sure to rock every discotheque on the planet!

a brand new compilation series from music response records, compiled and mixed by mighty mouse. ever since the mice were picked up by aeroplanes management, things have been taking off for the london duo. their remixes over the last year have been picking up heavy support (including radio 1 plays) from pete tong, kissy sell out, rob da bank, aeroplane, unabombers, mike pickering, sister bliss, ashley beedle, cosmo, trevor jackson, laurent garnier, mouse t, nico de ceglia, prins thomas, disco bloodbath, horsemeat disco and many more.

mad dancer ep is freda’s second offering through sydney imprint moonshoe records - the record maintains the raw crunchy nature of his debut whilst he progresses into more dissonant atmospheres. wobbling jazz loops guide the a side through 2 up-tempo yet calming house tracks. the title track mad dancer is kept alive by crunchy, swinging hi-hats and bouncy synth melodies. smoking causes is a slow burning take on disco. on the flip (breakfast) is the curveball of the 3 tracks. a darker mood is established before a syncopated break drives the ep home, exemplified by a sliding dissonant synth melody.

the finnish tropical troupe maajo is back with a two-track ep. in contrast to the afro-balearic sound of their 2016 debut tropic of tulli, the new defo / mansaba ep is a step in a deeper and sometimes darker direction. defo kicks off the ep with a driving 5/4 rhythm. reminiscent of mark ernestus’ ndagga sounds, it is a tribal tune with maajo’s signature ethereal disco elements. trevor deep jr.’s version straightens out the original’s unconventional time signature and focuses on a four-to-four beat and plenty of berliner dub. the remix is a solid dancefloor tool, traversing the original like a train making its way through a dark rainforest. the b-side is entirely covered by mansaba, a 14-minute long journey into inwards. this studio jam, recorded largely live, is a wild mixture of polyrhythmic sequences, krautrock guitar licks, equatorial forest percussion and violin synths. the trip starts slow and soothing, sneakily picks up pace and keeps grow and growing, eventually exploding into a full-on tribal dance.

those wizards of digging psychemagik doing the business once again. hot on the heels of last year s monstrous gotta hold on me / wildman they re letting folks know that they were still out there searching in the darkest recesses of the last 40+ years of popular and unpopular music, and boy oh boy are they good at it! the trip lives up to it s name. the track kicks off with some ultra beefed up psychedelic shenanigans, swirling, cacophonous sounds whirl and sweep and gradually drag us into the holographic tunnel, gradually giving way to some heavyweight drums and percussions and unfurling into a muscular psych-discoid beast. this one will send the kids crazy and will undoubtedly cause some damage in the club, both sonically and mentally. but what is the original? we hear you say... answers on a postcard please. sisters of the moon on the flip-side is a very different animal - all laid back, laconic steel-guitars and thundering slo-mo drums and percussion. the dark side of a rural witchcraft dream exposed here, almost menacing... and then? those vocals spring out of the mix amidst the throbbing sexually charged atmosphere and drag us back into the realm of near reality with sultry moans and groans. this one s woozy alright, but in the best possible way. so wrong, it s right and possibly the natural soundtrack to too many of those strange shots that that guy in the weird hat gave us earlier when we entered that country pub. what guy? i hear you ask.... ultimate freak-disco and deepest druid funk for the discerning and psychedelically inclined record consumer.

for our first release of 2018 and our 11th year in the game, we kick off proceedings with jicheal mackson. the highly in demand producer and live artist drops another forward thinking offering on our imprint. on the a side he delivers carneval, its an underground disco themed cut with hypnotic highs, a groovy bassline and intricate drum programming that evolves through out, vocal murmurs add to the ambiance and complete this winner. jichael switches things up on the b side (vinyl only) with odyssey, this is a more stripped down and trippy affair with break beat drum programming merged with 4/4 swing, white noise slashes and drones set the mood for dark little number. on b2, he lifts the mood with kraut, a more upbeat offering, driven with a bouncy bass groove and intermittent lush pads he creates another groovy master piece perfect for a late night dance floor. this ep truly shows the diversity and talent of jicheal mackson and confirms serialism never ending quest to deliver quality underground music...

limited to 300 copies! following his recent releases on tartelet records and oye, uffe kicks off the nos classics label with a record consisting of three mutated disco tracks that marks the start of his own new copenhagen-based label. run together with fellow tartelet affiliates vktr and jeppe wolmer (of vivian international) the first records a-side is a dubbed out percussive testament to the darkest and saddest times of uffe s life. a2 is a melodic and dreamy homage to one certain apartement located on the lijnbaangracht in the jordaan area in amsterdam. on the top floor of this worn down old house there was light to be found in these dark times. on the flip-side tings gets trippy. the title track finds uffe deeply intertwined in an occult-like bass-heavy ritual. an attempt to escape reality and cure the scandinavian misanthropy and the grey weather it comes with. a twelve minute voodoo disco tool perfectly crafted for a dancefloor which most probably does not exist.

yandom are not new to the scene. but then again they are. the project has been kicked off by yannick labbe and dominik marz, already renowned producers and djs before they decided to join forces in in january of 2017 with their remix for dekodeko on leipzig-based label ors. yandoms productions are discoid excursions to the dark side a sound spanning from leftfield italo-esque productions to straight up techno-bangers. a sound already loved and played by artists like michael mayer, solomun, kornel kovacs and many more. at the moment, yandom are working on eps following their next release on &nd music (scheduled for september 2017). as djs, yandom deliver an infectious and very musical freestyleapproach, dropping anything from techno to vintage classics and held together by a strong foundation of electronica. a yandom-set is anything but random and yes, they do look as good in reality as on the photos.

new kid felix leifur made quiet a stir with his debut release on dirt crew last year. the icelandic juggernaut comes from the striving reykjavik music scene and is working closely with the lagaffe tales guys on building a new northern house empire. since his debut hes been working hard on creating a more varied vision of his unique lo slung hip hop approach to house music. with this ep he offers six new outings that have one thing in common, very warm and moody sounds ranging from disco through jazz and hip hop. were certain that he will continue to further cement his name in the coming years and were looking forward to working with him on plenty of exciting projects. opening with eyelids, felix delivers a rough, deep and dark house cut with broken beats, warped piano loops and twisted sampling throughout. classy has a smoky jazz feeling, kept tight with clever beat programming while evolving around a catchy sax motif. our personal fav is the title track, in general, a stunning broken beat house jam, smooth and loose, with swirling keys and a funk flavoured bass. the b-side begins with midwinter, a dance floor gem on a straight up junket. its deep, forward moving and bass driven, much like his track feels like that featured on our deep love compilation in 2016. yet another highlight for us is apollo, theres not many records out there that sound quite like this, thoroughly warped and contorted, depraved strings and a hypnotising rhodes arc and strain until the bass drops and it all falls in place psychedelic beauty! he closes with mine, a dope lo fi hip hop beat that casually wraps our ears, an ice cold soul infused piece.

to wrap up 2016, true romance unleashes one more disco stunner. this time the fabulous three tracks 12 comes from the classically trained yet funky to the bone: phil gerus. the russian producer has been a rising force of the modern disco movement with releases on futureboogie, sonar kollektiv, thugboat edits to name a few. the make time ep, his first offering on true romance, confirms gerus is here to stay. the a side, she is wearing her black boots again, is meant to played very loud and very late in a dark smoke-filled room. its a raw thumper with a thick post-disco bass line, robotic italo synth, dreamy chopped up vocals all layered with catchy mysterious chords. the flipside starts with the irresistible make time, a groovy number with loopy funk guitars, soulful vocals and infectious keys that will stick to you like glue. for the grande finale, gerus serves us detective from kamakura: a gritty electronic funk track with banging percussions and delirious moans that will keep you awake until the break of dawn.

la dame noir is one of marseille s most reliable outposts for serious disco-flavoured grooves both in the club and as a label, and now they make the leap to vinyl with a crucial collection of remixes from serious heads. pete herbert steps up first to rework m.u.s.i.q.u.e s -over to you-, turning the original into a simmering, noirish burner with speak and spell vox in the foreground. meanwhile herbert s take on nouveau rom s -timide comme un ange- is a looped-up dream of a groove that positively takes off when the peak section kicks in. dj steef then echoes the remix choices on the b-side, subtly edging the nouveau rom track into an even airier version before creating an emotional twist on -over to you-.

finish techno pioneer and dum records boss kimmo rapatti aka mono junk and melody boy 2000 is back with another fine ep of some of his greatest tracks. all three have been released before now, but never all together on the same ep. a1 sound stealer was released in 2007 under the melody boy 200 alias and since then has been hugely sought after, often fetching high prices on discogs. it is a high impact techno track with racing drums and chattery percussion that will take any floor by storm. a2 all alone, again as melody boy 2000, has only been released on cd before now, as part of a label compilation back in 2002. this one is deep and rubbery, spaced out and elastic and is full of moodiness and melody. both b-side tracks were written as mono junk and both were written in 1992. first up, apache acid came on vinyl own music man and is a face melting, hundred miler per hour banger with manic 303s buried within. finally, ‘beyond the darkness’ was a key early techno track to come from finland and has previously been released on dum010. says the artist of the track, “an ensoniq asr-10 arrived on the market and studio engineer perttu bought it right away, but i never liked to use sounds that someone else had made. we sampled the track’s bassline, strings and others from my jx-3p separately and mixed it all together.” the result is an atmospheric track with swirling pads, icy synths and form drums that will make people march, no doubt.

already doing the rounds and the damage for a while, unleashed tapes vol. 1 is finally officially available. a special treat from the tiger’s lair with a different and darker twist, that seeks out the darker and more dodgy discotheques on the side streets and in the backyards, where the trough has no flush and the mirror balls have never been cleaned. automatic rhythms and electronic dancing sound made years after the future. make up your own mind!

patrick richard is back on romb with a killer ep. parallax starts off with a deep, discoish house banger, built around a firm kick, filtered stabs, arpeggios and lush pads, guaranteed to get the dance floor boiling. gravity meanwhile is a deep and gritty head nodding gem, where the heavy bass and dubby atmosphere creates a relaxed chunk of deep house.the b-side starts off in darker territories with an aggressive stab to be recognized, a driving bass and pulsating pads that create a dusky, blade runner tinted atmosphere.

manchester s rainy city music continues to celebrate 20 years of the record label in 2016 and continue the success of the last two vinyl releases by dele sosimi afrobeat orchestra, via their own label and also with berlin s innervisions label. the 20 year celebration is also riding high on the current huge success of the re-issue of their second ever release from 1996 by city people it s all in the groove , now available again by the hugely popular artist motor city drum emsemble. this new release by artists irfan rainy & rex leon is a 4 trk ep from their digi lp titled cross step drag, a reference to the house dance culture from new york city. the four tracks released here highlight the huge variety in styles of house music created by the mancunian duo. the a side s track one vodun is simply voodoo / tribal house music for lovers of the old school jovonn sound. track 2 smash the silence is a brand new version of previous digital only release where afrobeat & house music are combined. it features the rasping vocals of lagos based nigerian actress vera e and the definite influence of fela kuti. flip to the b side and get to the deep dark twisted underworld of black america via snoop story (ode to the wire) and you hear one of the moodiest dance records you will ever hear and a tragic story of snoop, one of the wire s best performers from the cult tv series. the final track on the ep manc union dub is a dub house groove where ghostly brazilian candomble vibes meet the electronic dub beats of rhythm and sound. rounding off a hugely varied four track sampler receiving support from a huge cross sections of djs including danny krivit, at jazz, rahaan, kai alce, mad mats, osunlade, karizma, severino (horse meat disco), dj spinna & marcellus pittman.

deep, dark and instinctive techno/ rhythmic/ industrial/ drone music from manchester uk, are the words that can be found to describe the music of casual violence.. its safe to say that they picture the painting discovered in this new ep. expression unrelated is made up of four tracks as good as they are varied.. on the a side theres burn it all down , pure quality techno 4/4, dark and fleshy, the perfect bullet to hypnotise the dance floor in a few seconds.. youth horde, an interlude/break, deep aquifer on a down tempo beat, which rails in this a side beautifully. on the b side, the track who gave his name to the ep, expression unrelated is a track as dark as it is rhythmic. a broken devasted beat, over 9 minutes of insanity.. sensitive souls beware. we finish off with an outro/intro, where long and hypnotic strings interlace.. as already stated, pure drone music from manchester.

trackwork ep.no.2 is headed up by a super swingy acid tinged wigout multiculture - simple but deadly on the floor. next we have the stone-age-cave-rave of a billion years ago - a clash of de-tuned vox and live dub delay edits and to round side a off - feel it warps and mangles a classic paradise garage disco sample into some dark heads-down tracky gear.

having finished recording the new zombie zombie album (out: april 2012), etienne jaumet leaves temporarily the duo to record a solo piece, as a need to find oneself again … if the word satori means spiritual awakening, the title track that offers etienne seems to describe the way to this awakening … a winding and sometimes dark path, taking inspiration from both dark disco and synth wave (etienne is particularly keen of those genres, you can listen to his new podcast for versatile records as an evidence) and also to some kind of trance… on b side, jon convex, newcomer on the dubstep / uk garage field and signed on martyns label, delivers a clearly club oriented version, by injecting syncopated beat and the funky groove unique to uk garage.

this latest lovebirds ep on winding road records is another absolute masterpiece of chilled house soul and deep rave. a really excellent package and a must-have lovebirds release. on the a-side track, >want you in my soul<, lovebirds teams up with vocalist stee downes. stees acclaimed debut album >all in a day< was released on sonar kollektiv in 2008, and who has worked and performed alongside the likes of motor city drum ensemble, amp fiddler, dj spinna, and bugz in the attic. their collaboration for winding road is a driving vocal house bomb that will rock your world. the b-side kicks off with the dirty tech tune >give me a dubf*ck<, an injection of dark rave that has been causing serious explosions on dancefloors for a few months now. perfect chemical material for the harder floors. the b2 track is hot toddys remix of >want you in my soul< - a chrome-plated disco dimension to the track by crazy p man chris todd, which was licensed to tensnakes >in the house< compilation before it even saw the light of day. hot stuff indeed.

the 9th release on excentric muziks off-shoot rekluse brings with it a very welcome edition to the rekluse family, we are sure matt cooper is somebody who you will be hearing a lot more about in the nearest future, that is if you havent heard of him already...
from his mixmag >future hero< tag, to his efx1000 tutorial videos for pioneer (he has been likened to james zabiela but with bigger bass lines) and his ongoing residency at the dirty disco in leeds (the northern light was the original home for the club night which the ep title pays homage to), the only piece missing from his jigsaw was the production side of things, until now. he recently teamed up with spektre to launch their new respekt label with the >cuernos cubanos< collaboration, and now we are very proud to present matts first ever solo productions, brought together as >the northern light ep<.

without control is a disco infected electrofunk number with cool vocodered male vocals. jet project delivers a deep grooving detroit house groove of without control on the flip. summermash on the b side is another disco infected electrofunk track that rounds off this strong ep.

brooklyn duo beacon explore the dark side of sweet melody with a sound thats as seductive as it is subtly discomfiting. thomas mullarney iii and jacob gossett are unstoppable. the new york artists, collectively known as beacon, have been on a productive hot streak since 2012, and their efforts continue to pay off. when we werent writing, mullarney starts, we hit the road and didnt really look back. we toured the us five times since the ways we separate came out, building this project the old-fashioned way. and beacons natural, time-tested process has brought us escapements, their sophomore album for ghostly. we went into this feeling liberated, continues the singer/producer, and gossett seems to echo his thought: this record is in part our attempt to formulate what beacon is going to look and sound like going forward.
