by now, the story of how jlin went from working in a steel factory in gary, indiana to being one of the most widely appreciated electronic musicians is well known. “black origami” was one of the most lauded albums last year. seriously prolific and seriously hard-working, she has toured constantly since its may 2017 release and despite being involved in a wide range of projects, still manages to find a balance and time to “do some personal healing and growing.”
here we are over a year later with “autobiography,” the score for her collaboration with renowned british choreographer wayne mcgregor (a collaboration arranged by krakow’s unsound). this isn’t technically her third album (that’s due to arrive in 2019 or 2020), but the soundtrack stands up on its own with all the emotional peaks and troughs of a well-sequenced lp.

claude speeed returns to planet mu, two years after the “sun czar temple ep”, with his second album “infinity ultra”. he describes the record he’s been creating since he started making computer music as one “conceiving an interior territory: an abstract space to process the oppression, confusion and insanity of the contemporary age, and to formulate an honest emotional and artistic response - a psychic jumping off point into an uncertain future.”

ekoplekz returns with his fourth album for planet mu, in the shape of 10-tracker “bioprodukt”. the unique lo-fi, woozy sound of bristol’s nick edwards stays intact while he veers towards the nineties for inspiration: the bleep and bass sound of the north of england is one touchpoint and the acid gurgles of the 303 are another.

asher levitas is perhaps best known as part of old apparatus, the acclaimed and enigmatic london experimental outfit. over the last few years he has featured on releases for labels including deep medi, houndstooth and left blank as ‘saa’ with the singer linn carin dirdal.
‘lit harness’, his first solo album, started forming as a project in 2015 alongside the artist and writer michael crowe who worked on the live a/v show while asher created the music with vocalist marina elderton (from the ethereal psych band kull) who features on the tracks.

after last years album *love & devotion* the husband and wife duo of mike paradinas and lara rix-martin follow up with *weird drift*. the album shows just how much their ability to write confident and thoughtful pop songs has developed, while still being able to retain the sleepy cushion of steamy synth pop that made the first record so rewarding to listen to. this time album features the vocals of a vezelay, a.k.a. french singer and producer matthieu le berre, who brings a gentle poised falsetto to the duos productions along with a delicate but hopeful angst. the vinyl lp comes with download code for the full album.

miracles debut album is a collaboration between two artists with a rich history in music you wouldnt immediately associate with mercury. daniel o sullivan has played and sung in bands such as ulver, mothlite, grumbling fur and guapo, while steve moore has recorded as half of the italian soundtrack inspired synth band zombi, and on dance labels such as kompakt and more recently l.i.e.s.

misty conditions is a project that started off when henry collins and richard wilson met up in henrys studio a couple of years ago and jammed for a few days non-stop, enjoying the process thoroughly. the connection became so good in this period that the duo developed a fluent understanding of how each other worked, ending up as a project made across the internet, while henry was living in france and richard in la. they cross pollinated by developing what each did best, henry making and creating banks of samples and richard creating software and effects to cut up and re-sample, passing the tracks back and forth, essentially until they felt finished.

with his second release for planet mu this year, >dream on< is more of a full-length outing for ital aka daniel martin-mccormick and a much more substantial record than the popular and critically acclaimed >hive mind<.
on >dream on< ital takes his experimentation with house and techno forms even further, creating impressionistic deconstructions from the tropes of early house and techno. sunny chords, laid back drum shuffle and rhythmic vocal loops are picked apart and threaded with a rich psychodrama of delirious textures, tidal chords and uneasy roughness and dissonance.

protect-u is the studio project of mike petillo and aaron leitko, who are associated with the new breed of dance music producers from in and around washington dc, coming from a similar background as ital, innergaze and beautiful swimmers, with a history of playing alongside mi ami, blues control, slava, steve moore & pissed jeans, among others. mike is also co-owner of the very cool record label future times, alongside andrew field-pickering a.k.a. maxmillion dunbar, who is also one half of beautiful swimmers.

on his debut album the host works in a spacey interzone, using vintage gear to create dramatic panoramas for the headphoned mind. he creates a unique suite of modern impressionistic sonics that tumble and waft in and out of the mix, earthed with strong melodies that take inspiration from net-age genres while never recalling them directly. throughout, he masters all the potentials of vintage synths, drum machines and reverbs, along with guitar and bass to explore a sound that sets him apart from producers working on computers, creating something much more band-like but rich with lively micro-detail.

2011 debut album from tropics aka british producer and multi-instrumentalist chris ward. since planet mu released his first single, -soft vision-, the synthpop of his early tracks has evolved into a more substantial and personal style. parodia flare features ward as a multi-instrumental auteur, weaving together vintage sounds, rhodes keyboard, banks of old synths, software and guitars, live drums and electric bass.

terror danjah is back on planet mu after last years >gremlinz< compilation reintroduced him to the world at large. since then, as well as planet mu, he has released a single on hyperdub, one on butterz with more to come.
well the gremlinz are back again on planet mu with this punchy 8 track double e.p. of experimental grime that showcases a breadth of new music, that swallows rnb and dubstep into terrors self made matrix.

optimum is malcolm chen, a new producer from south east london. he has collaborated with ikonika recently but planet mu are very happy to be releasing his first solo 12 inch.
the lead track >max power< lives up to its name, mixing tight electro-soca drums with a barrage of ravey riffs that build up with strange transporting noises, creating an almost unbearable, driving intensity without ever having to reach for the wobbly bass or other cliches.

numan khan from manchester is a new artist for planet mu with an original musical style that mixes dubstep and grime influences with an idiosyncratic take on rhythm to great effect.
this four track ep showcases his styles from the a side with the lush melodic accordian and snes melodies of >race against time<, to the slower, disco influenced >photograph<.
the b side starts with >voodoo<, which combines grimey bass and strings with offbeat drums to odd, driving effect and finishes with >xx< which sounds like a long lost golden era 8-bit grime instrumental but with deft production tweaks and fx that keep it interesting and effective.

her remix of eero johannes >we could be skweeeerooos< on the b-side simply switches up the tempo of the original, makes the rhythm nice and bouncy and tightens up the original adding some trademark bent melodies and a see-sawing bassline. the end result is a linear, melodic track that feels like its somewhere between wiley and aphex at their sweetest.

terror danjah isnt a household name, hes not as well known as wiley or dizzee rascal, but hes considered by the grime cognoscenti to be the best grime producer ever. originally part of the nasty crew and then aftershock, terror has released countless 12inchs and remixes as well as several mixtapes.

brackles (aka rob kemp)s duties as a regular warm up dj at the infamous london dubstep night fwd, as well as regular appearances on rinse fm have earned him a reputation as a skilled selector and man of good taste

the sunshine coast?s resident electronic maverick, milanese is back on with his heavy-as-fuck 2nd album on the mighty planet mu, and a snapshot of the continued evolution of his unique, fresh angle on streetwise uk bass music.
having pioneered the heavy, dark and twisted experimental dubstep sound with his previous releases on warp, combat, mg77, arcola, seed and planet mu, this new lp sees a shift towards collaboration. with strong vocal artists like ben sharpa (pioneer unit, cape town) and rqm (al haca, vienna), who deliver interesting lyrics in a unique style, melded perfectly with milanese?s own fat swerving basslines, solid drums full of attitude and odd, mangled samples.
