after the reception of “battle anybody” from luminaries like dj premier (#19 on his best of 2013 picks), dj evil dee, dj eclipse and more, dawhud and ace-one started working on a proper follow up to their emceeing anthem. one track turned into an ep which then quickly turned into a full length project. the project... d&g (david & goliath) - “the scepter & the sword” the concept for the group simply came from dawhud’s name (david in arabic) and ace-one, who was in the midst of fnishing up his “rapmonster” series. those two elements and the sheer chest pounding vibe of their prior track led to the creation of “david & goliath”. epic, biblical, and loaded with imagery that paints what the duo are trying to convey in just a name. produced entirely by dawhud, the duo trade verses over his landscapes to join forces and reign together. from the opening battle cry of “something’s coming” to the closing of their p-p-p-p-p-premier approved track, “the scepter & the sword” is a rap odyssey. assisting the duo on this legendary journey are emcees like masta ace, rock (from heltah skeltah), sadat x, kokane and pacewon alongside longtime friends/emcees joe harvey, jo and otomatik. with a title like “david & goliath”… legends should be involved. something’s coming…

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. it might not always be obvious, but music as escapism can serve as a radical social statement. what some may see as daydreaming or imagination of impossible realities, can constitute a sort of revolution of thought, the seed of a more human and sentient worldview. although on a first listen, high-level basis, it may seem as if the music contained in informa’s 10th release is a series of psychedelic, dystopian and otherworldly tools for escape, it might actually be a proposition for improvement, a route to self-discovery, a reflection on the true nature of our surroundings. although at no point in this release such high concepts are made explicit, there is a consistency in vision and methods present in the art created by the peers that label founder and owner deepbass has selected for this very special, celebratory release. encapsulating the product of eight minds, eight visions, in a common concept for evolution in unity.

various is a good word to describe this escales vol.2 from croisière musique crew, the second various e.p. from the label, which seems so diverse that it almost could seem inconsistent to someone not familiar with the label. at the same time this e.p. summarizes perfectly a collection of different styles and aspects of croisière musique, from some heavy dancefloor-friendly house and techno to more abstract acid grooves, going through breaky minimalism. a1 – the e.p. starts with battle of wits from sebastian eduardo which is a direct uncompromising floor-oriented piece of house, setting a filtered atmosphere, bouncy bassline and a filtered synth which reminds us of a dubby atmosphere. a thick and compact atmospheric part progressively takes on the middle of the track and suddenly fades to let the main dancing pattern return. a2 – lowlifequalitys is a spatious acid piece which contains elements that are close to the aesthetic of video games. all synths coming together give a sense of confusion yet ordered by the repetitiveness of the loop. the sensation of something nerd and muddle rise from this experience, a expression of weirdness by the member of les points.b1 – programming behavior sets a step back in the ep, evolving around an hypnothic vocal piece which is extracted from an old interview of george clinton, heavily chopped and processed. on top of the simple breaky drum pattern which recenters the experience, gets added an arpeggio and a modular synth sounding sequence which progressively dramatizes the track. rx delivers here a mysterious piece of minimalism, bitter yet swingy. b2 – the e.p. ends with catan, the first appearance from françois, who co-founded croisière musique with rx. starting with an ambiant and breaky atmosphere, catan quickly evolves to a drivy four step techno piece. on top of the leading synth comes different glitchy elements, aerial pads and a disturbing shamanistic glitch in the middle of the track that announces a break which confuses the listener. the track follows-up on this contradiction between the hypnotic grooves and the solid drivy techno.

the third release on ascorbites own corseque records is not for the faint-hearted. advance the flight and inadequate demeanor are clearly twins, delivered from the darkest corners of ascorbite’s mind. the bold, pounding quality of the ep brings adam x or grovskopa to mind but ascorbite has a dystopian touch that’s entirely his own. advance the flight is like a battle track for an intergalactic armada being attacked by an infinite horde of swarming space ants. inadequate demeanor, on the other hand, is a grim steampunk fantasy of a black, shining locomotive plainly out of control, raging on red hot rails towards the end of the line. however, while both tracks are rough and unforgiving, ascorbite manages to invigorate them by the use of subtle melancholic atmospheres – like rainy skies over a concrete desert. a balance between brutalism and vitality. a trademark of ascorbite and corseque records.

das könnte leicht schnulzig oder sogar esoterisch wirken. der fakt, dass dem nicht so ist, ist die große stärke von patrick o laoghaire aka i have a tribe. mit seinen gefühlen im reinen zu sein und diese durch die musik auszudrücken. nicht einfach einem trend folgen oder mit einfachen musiktheoretischen strukturen radio-hit-singles produzieren. wie schon davor, lassen die songs auf diesem album viel platz für patrick’s stimme, manchmal kann man sogar den parkett boden unter den füßen knarzen hören. seine interpretation des instruments ist hoch innovativ, er lockt melodien hervor und produziert unprätentiöse rhythmen. vermittelt seine beobachtungen, gedanken und emotionen auf zwei ebenen. das klavier und seine stimme sind die eckpfeiler von “beneath a yellow moon”, und patrick ist von beidem ein meister.

continuing a sublime run of form for the label, the fourth outing on the lopasura imprint, is yet another classy trio of heady, analogue machine laden masterpieces. opening up with “out of the fog’, the familiar acidic arpeggio and crisp hits we’ve grown to love from benedikt frey, dance unwittingly along before being opened up by long, cinematic pads drenching the track with an emotion and grandeur so synonymous with his music. complimenting the a side, the looming intent ‘wolves’ adopts from the off evolves quickly into a driving, hypnotic and beautifully crafted piece that’s a true heads down, eyes-shut techno battle weapon. rounding off the ep on the b side is the exceptional ‘lights’. an unsettling, caliginous whir of industrial drones balances the tribal, percussive elements almost depicting a lost ship crashing over the swells of the ocean as it clings on to futile hope of finding the lighthouse. it meanders and threatens before an incredible synth hook ebbs in and takes over momentarily, before calmly simmering as the storm passes. never before has love pain sunshine and rain been more perfectly encompassed.
