john tejada was marooned in los angeles in the summer of 82. a strange place to grow up coming from vienna austria. even stranger considering the lack of techno there in the 90s. in a land of glowsticks and desert parties, tejada stuck to his love and development of his own unique electronic sound. fast forward to 2007 when detroit area native josh humphrey was also marooned in los angeles. it didnt take long for the two to meet and connect the cables on their modulars into a system twice as big. the result is marooned, palettes newest collaboration between john tejada and josh humphrey. the trio of songs reveal three sides to the duos work. the title track, marooned, joins humphreys modular synth work with tejadas beats and soothing pads, the result being a slice of beat-driven melodic techno created in a city where such sounds are rarely heard. melodiac continues from there with a lighter mood, with humphreys modular melodies and tejadas signature stabs and rhythms. rounding out the three is concrete safari, which largely focuses on humphreys modular fm synth work that slowly evolves into a cluster of tribal sounds, modular birds and grainy goodness. humphreys knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. he currently works with la based big city music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers. it is also a place tejada frequents to test most of his gear

reworked data vol. 1 features bodycode applying the house and techno sensibility of his recent immune album for spectral sound to tejadas production, followed by labelmate broker/dealers sophisticated melding of the source materials nearly fifteen-year-old anvil vapre-era sense of melancholy to an insistent 4/4 rhythm. traum schallplattens dominik eulberg continues his tradition of developing elaborate, drawn-out explorations of the ebb and flow of techno dynamics by adapting the asymmetrical idm sounds of tejadas source into a persistently propulsive techno narrative. finally, ninja tune and plug researchs daedelus applies the accessible synthpop template of last years love to make music to to tejadas melodies — almost crafting another >fair weather friends< in the process.

vertex is an exploration in two parts. the a sideÆs vertex and the locus of points explore the trackier side of tejadaÆs work meant mostly for vinyl play. both tracks make good use of strong wavetable chorded sounds, which are modulated throughout. the rhythms of the chords make up the identity of the track with elements coming in and out. vertex showcases a more layered approach to take the track from a percussive to a smooth feel. the locus of points follows more of a straight up techno approach sounding simple and effective. the b-side explores the more melodic and arrangement based side of tejadaÆs work. liquid mirror is a track rich in layers. 3 modular synth layers provide the initial modulating melodic ground work which is then complimented by lush tejada keyboard work bringing the song to itÆs apex and then reducing it back to itÆs start all while backed by tejadaÆs powerful drum work. p.l.l. (which stands for phase locked loop, a process explored here) continues this theme in a less obvious way. modular synths and drum tracks start things off while midway a modulating melodic phrase is introduced playing back a bit differently every time. four songs in all showcasing tejadaÆs simple and complex approach to dance music.
